We are docked in Aqaba for 1 day and will just be doing the ships tour to Petra - do you think we will need any local currency or can we mange with US$ for incidentals, water etc. Thanks

For those incidentals at tourist places such as Petra or Wadi Rum or Dead Sea, and most places in Aqaba too, USD or euros (or GBP) will do fine. This includes coins of €1 & £1 upwards. Take plenty of singles, to improve your bartering power.

You can use USA or Euros as noted.

 

You would have needed local currency for admission to Petra but since you are on a tout that will not be an issue.

I just want to add that I have been to the Lost City Of Petra two times and want to go back for a third time.

 

It is one of the most amazing historical sites I have ever visited.

I agree with everyone. Take small denominations of US$ & you will have no problem. Preferrably do not change money.
