Okay people I need help. Am doing a cruise tour in Alaska and would really like some input as to where to eat in the following towns.

Fairbanks

Denali

Talkeetna

Anchorage

Alyeska

Seward

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love seafood of any kind, but alas DH wont even try, so alternatives or places that have both would be great

Thanks

Lots of great restaurants in Anchorage. Are you on a cruise tour? Asking because trying to figure out if you'll be staying downtown, and then I can make some recommendations for where you'll be staying.

HI AkSusan

We will also be in Anchorage for one night and would love a restaurant recommendation , we are staying in the captain cook , thanks

Well, you're an easy walking distance from all kinds of restaurants.

So here goes, in no particular order :D

Simon & Seafort's http://www.simonandseaforts.com/

Orso's http://www.orsoalaska.com/

Glacier Brewhouse http://www.glacierbrewhouse.com/

Club Paris http://www.clubparisrestaurant.com/

Hot Stixx http://hottstixx.com/

Humpy's http://www.humpys.com/

Marx Brothers http://www.marxcafe.com/

Crow's Nest or Fletcher's in the Captain Cook http://captaincook.com/dining/

Sack's Cafe http://www.sackscafe.com/sacks/

And for Breakfast or Lunch - Snow City Cafe http://www.snowcitycafe.com/

I gave you a range of places and prices, so, now you can peruse all the menus and find something that you like.

According to where you chose to dine, you may want to make some reservations, unless, you don't mind waiting for a time, as tourist season makes downtown restaurants very busy at times!

I was glad to see Fletcher's on Aksusan's list. It is one of the best kept secrets in Anchorage.

To the OP -- where are you staying in Fairbanks? Chena's Grill (located at the River's Edge Resort) is one my favorites. They have a wide variety of offerings, and are excellent for seafood but also have beef and pork. The Pump House is in a historic building, and also has great seafood but, in my opinion, their beef offerings aren't as good as Chena's.

We had a great meal at Orso in Anchorage earlier this month. At the Denali Princess Lodge, we ate at the casual restaurant on the property. It was reasonably priced, nothing fancy (and much better than the restaurant at the Fairbanks Princess Lodge). We also ate sandwiches from the coffee shop across the street and Thai food from the food truck across the street. I recommend the food truck over the coffee shop.

Yes we are doing the cruisetour July 19-26/13, then the cruise down to Vancouver. I know it is early, but then it gives me lots of time to do research. They havent told us yet where we will be staying in Anchorage

Dont know yet where we are staying in Fairbanks - I guess it is too early for RCCl to make up their mind, however, we are flying in a two days before and then renting a car and just driving around to see more. The itinerary states coming in late (as we are flying from Canada) and then taking off first thing in the morning so we opted to go in so we can see some of Fairbanks and the surrounding area

Well, I haven't run into a cruise tour on any cruise line that doesn't stay in downtown Anchorage. Trust me, I've seen every cruise lines big buses at the various big hotels downtown.

So, with that, these are some of the restaurants that I recommended a couple of postings earlier!

Fluffy Terry: While at the Fairbanks airport while waiting for our luggage last June I took a look at the Celebrity/Royal Caribbean info desk. I had looked at it in 2011 too, but didn't pay close attention. If I remember correctly, this summer they are using two of the Fountainhead Hotels properties (Bear Lodge and Sophie Station) and Pikes Waterfront Lodge.

Pikes Waterfront has a very nice stand-alone restaurant, Pikes. Pikes Waterfront is also about half a mile from Chena's Grill (which is the restaurant associated with River's Edge Resort).

The Sophie Station has a nice restaurant, Zachs, on premises, but I have to admit that I prefer lunch at Zachs over their dinner menu. The Bear Lodge is part of the Wedgewood Resort complex, and has a on grounds restaurant. Geraldos is also within easy walking distance. The Fountainhead properties also have a large shuttle/trolley so even if you didn't have a car it should be relatively easy to get around.

Would a resi on a Wed or Thur night be nessesary? I see Glacier Brewhouse for dinner and Snowcity for breakfast both take them so just want an idea of how crowded I should expect them to be. July, so peak season.

Thanks AKSusan for all your info,

Patty

Doesn't seem to matter what night of a week it is during tourist season, they fill up. I've even had reservations and have had to wait, say 15 to 20 minutes, because the tables weren't turning over quickly enough. And with Snow City Cafe, being where it is, state offices and the state courtouse, you'll be going up against them too, to get a seat for breakfast!

Guess, I'd just play it safe and get them. That's what I do, if I'm heading downtown for dinner during the summer, make reservations.

We just came back from an RCI cruise tour and stayed at the Sophie Station in Fairbanks. Zachs had a great breakfast but unfortunately we missed dinner there. We did go to the Pump House though and highly recommend you head over there.

Also make a plan to visit the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska - Fairbanks. It was terrific

Well off the subject of dining - we are suppose to have the evening one day and the morning of the next as free time - would love to go fishing while in Alaska so thought maybe the evening - can you suggest any good companies - thought we would leave sightseeing or shopping in town till the morning of the next day - or

No problem!

Need anything else, just let me know!

There really aren't any companies that do local fishing here in town. I know at one time, there was a company running a store down on Ship Creek (this is in downtown Anchorage), where you could rent poles and such, but, according to when you're here and what fish are running, and what the tide is doing, that may not work out either.

Now if you rented a car, there are some places out in the Valley (about an hour away) that you could lake fish at, or about 30 minutes south at Bird Creek for salmon. But again, that would all depend on what was running and if you could find some places to rent gear and then pay for the license.

So, just having a night and a morning, I don't think this is going to work out. You'll just have to come back and go fishing :D

We just go back from a cruise tour. We booked so many excursions that we barely had time to eat, so much of the time, we grabbed food at the Princess Lodges. Most were good except the breakfast buffet at Denali. We stayed an extra few days in Anchorage and had very good meals at the Glacier Brewhouse,(don't miss the peanut butter pie !). We had a very good seafood diner at The Bridge resturant. You can also fish right under the restaurant.

We just ate at the Roadhouse in Talkeetna on Monday, 8/20/12, for lunch. They have what look to be HUGE meals for breakfast, also. We had pastys for lunch and some great soup. You eat family style at large tables. Fantastic bakery. It's just a fun place to go to, been there since about 1917. Great place!

  • 2 weeks later...

Orso really has excellent choices for the both of you. I have mixed feelings about Glacier Brewhouse. My one (and only) visit there was noisy and the place was crowded. More important was the vibe given off was that "we're so cool" and a little bit of "you're lucky to be here". I thought there was more emphasis on the brews than on the food. These are just my initial impressions.

I have the same feeling about the Brewhouse and the noise. It's how the place is built with the taller ceilings.

Brewhouse and Orso's are actually owned by the same company. They definitely have their bases covered on two different types of cuisine and atmosphere.

We were in Seward for 4 nights two weeks ago. We ate one night at Apollo's on 4th street in the historic district. Interesting mix of Greek, Italian, and seafood. Good food. Another night we ate at Terry's Sports Bar and Grill at 4th and Harbor St. Fish and chips were good, the salmon was excellent, they put a very tasty glaze on it and the rice was very flavorful. Another night we ate at Sackett's Kenai Grill in Sterling. Another great meal but a very casual dining experience (counter ordering) so if you are looking for a fine dining experience, this isn't it.
