Naples Taxi

We have read that you can get a taxi from the port in Naples to Hurculeneum and return for a round-trip cost of approx. 70e. Has anyone had any experience with this type of arrangement? Did he wait for you, or did you arrange a pick up time? When did you pay the driver? Did you pay the total amount at the end of the trip or make some other agreement? Thanks for your help.

Depending on when you are there & how many ships in port you may do better in terms of time and energy by making a reservation with a pvt driver. That way the driver will be waiting for you and will be with you for the entire time period. Yes it is more $$ but the peace of mind and saving of time -be sure to get back to the boat on time etc will be worth it

You also might do better by simply taking the Circumvesuviana Line train to Ercolano Scavi station and walking over to Herculanium. But if you want a taxi, the 70 Euro rate (round trip) is the correct price (unless they approve a rate increase). Whether the taxi waits for you or you make arrangements for him to return and pick you up is fine. However you would be wise not to pay until the return journey. Here is a link to some good official info on Naples taxis. Of course it helps if you can read a little Italian :)

If you click on the link Hank provided, and then on the link on the page to the rates, you'll see that the fixed fare from Naples to Ercolano, with a two hour stop at the excavations, and return is 70 Euro.

I always encourage people to print out the attachment (two pages, the first in Italian, the second the same but in English) and bring it with you. That way you can point to what you want if you have language problems.
