bookbabe Posted August 26, 2012 #2 Share Posted August 26, 2012 They don't have income or property taxes. The government makes its primary income from duty on anything imported, which in turn drives up the cost of goods. Plus there's the cost of shipping things to the island from wherever they're made (heavy things like beer and soda cost more to ship). Even beer brewed on the island is going to be a bit more expensive because the supplies to make it will be more expensive. There's also the fact that Caybrew is a small brewery and doesn't have the same economies of scale that large mass-market US breweries would have. TurtleTagger Posted August 26, 2012 #3 Share Posted August 26, 2012 :pWHY IS BEER SO EXPENSIVE ON GRAND CAYMAN WHEN THEY HAVE THERE OWN BREWERY?? IS IT GOUGING????? ANYONE KNOW??? Conservative Christian country that places a high Duty (e.g. tax) on "sin" products (in the example of imported beer/liquor) and ingredients to make "sin" products (in the example of the Cayman Islands Brewery beer). The duty on a case of beer is about $17 US. Throw in the high price of electricity for CIB as well, and that's why the local beer is not much cheaper than the imported beer (roughly $35 a case vs $46 a case for imports).
