Do you pick your room or let Carnival do it

It sounds like most people book in a way that they leave it up to CCL to pick your room. We don't like to do that, we would rather have the room we want in the place we want. Don't want to be above a lounge or right by elevators and so on.

What do you do and why?

I get the opposite impression, that many here book ES, which you have to pick a cabin.

Only a few book last minute rates which are gtys.

I wonder which impression is correct? I dont know.. I love gtys but think many here profess to love ES, which has no gtys.

I book at all different rates.

Whatever I can find at the time.

So if the rate I book allows me to choose, then I choose.

And if I book a rate in which I am assigned a cabin, then they choose.

Actually I have had some good surprises when they assign the cabin.

It's kind of fun.

This will be my first carnival cruise and I booked ES. Since our two adult children will be with us the Carnival woman booked our two balcony rooms and assured me that although they were not connected that they would be next to each other and we could connect through our balconies. Guess what? There is a cabin between us!!

That is the 2nd problem - the first was she mis-heard my name and had the wrong name for me. When I called back I was kind of scolded that since it is ES there could be no changes to our booking. I re-iterated SEVERAL times that it was NOT a change but a correction.

So, I know there will be no changing our rooms. . .

I am NOT a complainer and I know we will enjoy our cruise - but how many times can one person screw up a simple, easy booking???

I just booked the dream. could have saved $200 if i went with the Illinois resident rate, but carnival would have picked my room. we spent the extra $200 and with the sale going on, got a room on panorama deck! :D we like being high up. we were above the show lounge on the magic and above the casino on the victory and never had a noise problem. so being above a lounge or something wouldnt bother me

Your right a lot do seem to book ES, seems to be lots of talk about upgrades, guaranties and such. I'll admit I do not know about all these options because I do book the room I want. Hope to learn more.

I now ALWAYS pick our room. Here's why:

I got stuck in a high and forward Lido balcony once and had land sickness for 3 months afterwards. I usually get that "personal cruise" feeling for a few days after a cruise anyway, but that time was just way too much. This past cruise, picked a mid ship, mid deck balcony and didn't have that ocean motion for even 3 seconds afterwards. All else even (like sea conditions, same travel to and from, etc.) all I can blame are the forward rooms - especially the higher level ones.

We always pick out our rooms....we have recently become aft balcony snobs!!! I"m not sure if I could ever go back to being an inside cabin girl!!:D

Booked an aft one our second cruise have only had them since. In 80 some days we are trying a normal balcony (no aft's available) and axious to see how we like it.

The ONE time we let Carnival choose our cabin we ended up under the Orchestra Pit where they put on two shows each night. LOL....our walls and beds were thump, thumping and vibrating all over the place!:D. Too bad I was with my mother:p. Ahhhh, memories!!

We usually pick ours. One time we booked one about a month out and let them pick. We ended up with a mini suite.

If we are planning ahead, I like to know where we are staying. As we get closer I'll ask my PVP if there are any comped upgrades.
