November Election Results

We'll be on the Zuiderdam on October 29 to the Panama Canal. We will, of course, vote early but I am wondering will we be able to see election results on the cruise? Anyone know what kind of tv stations are on during this trip. Thanks.

I'm sure you'll have CCN International, and one of the Fox news networks. You should be well-covered on getting national results.

You can always log into parts of the New York Times for no charge, too.

BUT you've given me a great idea: cruise the weeks leading up to elections so I don't have to listen to all the talking heads, read FB comments, see ads, get people at my door, etc!

All HAL ships have 24/7 Fox and CNN news stations.

Assuming the satelites is sending down a signal the ship can pick up, you will see full coverage on both of those news stations. It's been our experience on recent cruises, that CNN is U.S. version.

I agree with the above. I was on HAL ships in '96 and '00 and we were able to see the coverage.

Oh boy, a question I can answer! :D I was on the Eurodam during the 2008 election. The ship had a big watch party in the Queen's Lounge complete with a giant cake decorated like the American flag. It was very festive with lots of red, white and blue. You could also watch it on the TV in your room. We were in the Caribbean traveling between BVI and USVI and I thought it was really cool to be between those islands watching something that defined the USA. :)

 

I'm sure the Zuiderdam will do the same thing. Well, not be in the same place, but put on the same type of celebration. ;)

We have been on a couple of cruises when elections were held.

 

We voted early as well.

 

And the results were shown on the TV and The Times Digest had the results as well.

In Nov 2000 we were on a barge cruise in France's Loire valley. All 15 people aboard were Americans - some with more interest in the "hanging chad" election than others. It was fascinating to see people dashing off the boat as soon as we anchored in some tiny town looking for an English language newspaper. At one point they lived off of a 3-day old issue of the International Herald Tribune!

 

For those of us looking to escape the post-election pontificating there was no hope - it was still going strong when we got back home.

We will cruising in Australia so the timing is great. When we wake up on the morning of November 7th, the polls will just be closing in the Eastern U.S. If current polls are correct, I suspect it will late in the evening, Australian time, before we know a winner.

I will be cruising in New Zealand shortly after the elections. I'm working on self-control now so that I wont be tempted to dispatch anyone who wants to talk about the election by throwing them overboard. Okay, I'll be tempted, but will try not to actually do it!

Self-control is a good plan as November 7th marks the first day of the 2016 Presidential campaign.

We were on a Sea of Cortez Ryndam cruise during the 2004 elections. One of the bars (I think it was the casino car) had the TV turned to the election results. Basically the room was segregated according to your candidate and for awhile it got a little "ugly".:eek: But it was on and we enjoyed seeing it.;)

Fortunately, there should be a winner projected as soon as we see the reports from the East and Central states.

 

The only poll is the one that happens November 6. Keep an eye on Michigan, that should predict the winner.

In 2008 we had the privilege of sailing HAL's Grand Asia Australia cruise on the Amsterdam -- 65 days. We left just before the bottom fell out of the economy. I used to turn on CNN in the middle of the night, without sound, to see how the Dow was doing -- DH thought I was nuts. We felt like the passengers from the movie "Ship of Fools" cruising in luxury while Hitler walked across Europe, or in our case while our economy "burned".

 

We found it, in general, a great pleasure not to have to listen to all the pre-election sniping and those awful negative ads. Too bad we can't do that this time around.

 

We had to vote absentee but we had to leave home before the ballots were printed in our area. A fellow CC member who was joining the cruise in Singapore volunteered to carry ballots for anyone who was in our situation to Singapore. So we had our ballots mailed to him and along with another CC member couple, we met him at his hotel first thing in the morning in Singapore where we marked our ballots.

 

The four of us then got in a cab and went to the American Embassy where after passing the most thorough security screening we have ever encountered--we were allowed in and were able to post them by having them placed in the Embassy's daily "packet" to the US.

 

On election day we were in Sydney. DH and I sat down to a late fish and chips lunch at a waterfront bar on Circular Quay. There was a large TV there, and we were the only customers there at that hour so we asked the waitress to turn on the TV so that we could watch the election returns. We were sitting at that restaurant in Australia when the election was declared.

 

We watched McCain's and Obama's speeches when we got back to our cabin on the Amsterdam.

 

This was my first time in any US embassy. This was the first time I had to vote absentee in a presidential election. It was probably the only time I will ever vote in Singapore. It was all such an incredible experience.
