hi - we are 2 couples on our first MED cruise and would like to know tips/suggestions for SHORE EXCURSIONS FOR:

 

1. MESSINA (tour outside Messina - not interested in staying in MESSINA)

2. ROME

 

We are already booking an Elite Tour for Naples (Pompeii/Sorrento/Positano)

 

any tips/suggestioins are welcome

We used Sicily Life in 2010 for a Godfather's Tour from Taormina and enjoyed it very much.

Rome in Limo gets you right up to the sights you will want to see. I also suggest youy let them hire you a guiide for the Vaican. Messimo was our guide and did an excellent job at gettining us to realize what we really were seeing. Alberto, our driver was very informative, able to handle the busy streets of Rome.

In Messina we used Sicily by Mario..It was a wonderful tour with just 8 of us in the van. It cost 50 euros p/p and we toured places the big busses couldn't go. You can check them out on Trip Advisor. Have fun

For a first time visitor to Messina we normally recommend going to Taormina (even better if you can somehow combine it with a visit to Castelmola). You can get to Taormoina by taking an excursion offered by your ship, booking a private car/driver, renting a car and driving yourself, or it can be done with public transit with some difficulty.

For Rome we used Share A Shore Excursion in Italy http://www.shareashoreexcursioninitaly.com/ which was posted on our roll call and it was the best excursion I have ever taken. We did the front of the line Rome tour where they provided tickets for us and we went right in at the Colosseum and at the Vatican. We also opted for their Vatican guide which we are so glad we did. He was so informative. We had a van and 8 of us and we saw so much of Rome in the amount if time we had. Highly recommend.

 

In Naples we just did a half day ship tour to Pompeii. It was a very fascinating place. If you do Pompeii I would opt for a smaller excursion group through a company like share a shore excursion so you can see more and hear your guide better.
