Just booked the Sun Princess for July 2013 to Southeast Asia

 

I understand that the Sun Princess is part of Princess Australia.

 

I've only ever sailed on Princess USA cruises. Can someone tell me about the Princess Australia cruises and how they are different from Princess USA cruises?

 

Also, anything special or different about Sun Princess that I shouldn't miss?

the only difference is the Sun Princess doesnt have anytime dining and the currency is in AUD and you will need an adapter to charge your mobile phone, camera etc or bring a power board

 

the Sun's a nice ship and hope you enjoy yourself

Also, there are some differences in the menus, especially the buffet at lunch. However, it is mostly additional choices rather that replacements.

 

Autotip is $10 per person per day for folks from the Northern Hemisphere.

 

Onboard prices are much higher than other Princess Cruises. In May 2011, on the Ocean Princess, a Dewars and Water was $5.70 including tip. In September 2011, on the Dawn Princess, same drink was $7.60. Liquor in the "duty free" shop was a bout 50% higher.

oh, I hadn't thought about the power issue! darn. ok, i have an electric converter that i use for my trips, so i'll have to remember to bring that with me!

thank you! i had heard that prices were higher. luckily, i don't drinks, so i won't have to worry about that too much.

 

so autotip is $10. is that USD or AUD?

 

i thought I had read previously that Princess Australia was no-tip, that the tip was already included in the price of the cruise. guess I heard wrong.

the no tip is for aussie/kiwis only as its included in the fare

All prices on the ship, including the autotip is in AU$.

 

There is no autotip charged to to people from Australia and NZ. All others get the autotip.

They are still Princess ships and you will have the same great time as in the USA based ships. There is no gratuity added to drinks so the price you see sis the price that will be charged. The price will; probably be a little more than the USA equivalent drinks. You will have a fun time - if you like trivia do join a mixed nationality team as they will love to have some USA knowledge to assist with the questions.

 

I love the Sun have been on it for about 1120 days now wish I could go again We did Asia and Africa last with them and had a marvellous time

and thanks for clearing up the no tip policy. now i understand. for some reason, i thought it was no tip for everyone.

 

$10 AUD per person, per day works for me. do i have to sign up for auto tip or is it just billed to my shipboard account automatically?

 

any thing else i should know about for the trip?

When sailing out of Autralia in July it will be their winter so the first day or so until you get more notherly may be cool.

Join your roll call to meet others and go to the port of call section of cc for excursion ideas

my sailing actually embarks in Hong Kong and disembarks in Singapore.

 

so, in july it will hot and humid, i know i'm Thai, and that's all the weather is like in Thailand!

 

i've started a roll call and have ideas on excursions and private tours! unfortunately, its just me on the roll call for now.. fingers crossed others join!

Just one thing to remember if you are bringing your own electrical appliances from the States. Unless they are dual voltage, they will not work here as we have 240V and you only have around 110V. Our voltage would probably blow them up.

 

When we travel to the U.S. I always pack a dual voltage hair dry which I can switch over from one Voltage to the other. I find that my camera and mobile phone are fine when charging but I wanted to make sure you are aware of the difference here.

We were on the Sea Princess in February out of Sydney to NZ, and by the desk, there was one AU outlet, and one US. We used our adapter for our dual voltage appliances, and the US for those that were not.

 

Oh, that makes it even more convenient! I wonder if the Sun Princess has both outlets as well...

Hm...if so, I may have to re-think going to the casino. I don't want to have to worry about acquiring AUD on my trip along with all the other currencies, especially when my cruise is a Southeast Asian one and doesn't even stop in Australia!

Yes, AUD, but you can get chips or use the slot machines by putting the cost onto your onboard account.

Yes, everything on the ship including the casino is in AU$.

If I take chips or cash for the casino from the onboard account, is there a charge?

 

For instance, this past summer on RCI, if I wanted to take a cash advance from my onboard account there was a 3% charge.

 

hm.... maybe this is just a way to tell me that I should stay away from the casino! ha!
