"Tweeners"...18-22 year olds (girls)

What is there for them to do for "fun" on our upcoming Alaskan Cruise 6/4? We have an 18 and 22 year old in our group and I'm wondering how they will occupy their "sea time". Thanks for any help in advance. I was hoping to see some "Patters", but as of now, nothing new except from last year.

I'm just bumping this in hopes of a reply. This is our first cruise and don't know much about shipboard activities. I know they will both use fitness center, but what else?

I think the girls will have loads to see & do.

The Alaska Cruise does make you want to spend alot of time outdoors seeing the sites. If you are lucky they can enjoy good weather & sunshine.

There are all sorts of activities planned for sea days. You did not mention what ship you were on.? They have classes, shopping, games, etc.

Loads to see & do in your ports of call. Have fun:)

We are booked on the Diamond 6/4, inside passage to Alaska. A friend just returned from an RCCI cruise and talked about activities such as "hairy leg contests" etc. I know these gals wouldn't be interested in this sort of activity.

Port days have been schelued, but I'm concerned re: "sea time".

I was RCI with my 18 and 24 year old daughters in February - Caribbean and sorry to say they found it somewhat boring on the sea days. They didn't find much to do. We were on Adventure of the Seas and thought they would have fun with the Rock Wall, the miniture golf, but they said it got old fast. The 18 year old would rather sit in the room and watch TV. I was furious...she doesn't care to lay around a lot, with the exception of sleeping in until after 12:00 noon...at home...got her up at 7 each port day, but did leave her be on sea days.

Not sure what they will do...sorry I have put this out, but maybe my daughters are different than your girls.

Hope they have a great time. I know mine did on port days, but at sea, bored, bored, bored.

We were on the Diamond in March. I have a 20 yr old son and 18 yr old daughter. They found plenty to do! The ship also had a get together the first evening for the 18-21 yr old range and they met a lot of friends thru that also.

Have the girls check out the spa area for specials if they are into that sort of thing. My daughter loved it! Try doing tea in the afternoon one day. That was something we had not done before that was fun. There will be lots of demo's on various things too. I am sure there will be movies. How about dance lessons? There always seems to be line dance lessons at some point in time.

Try not to worry. Your girls will have a wonderful time whatever they end up doing, even if it's just catching up on some much needed rest from hectic schedules.

I'm a 23 yr old guy and I have been on 3 cruises, all princess. I was 17, 20 and 22. Believe me, there are plenty of things to do. However, we were only on warm weather cruises. My favorite thing to do was the pool games because everyone that was around my age was entering and it was an easy way to meet other people my age. We could have sat by the pool but that gets old, so I would watch a movie in the Princess theater. They have classes, quiz games, the casino is open (if you are over 21), the bars are all open, mini golf, or golf simulator. My main advice is to find people your age the first or second day. It is much more fun to sit in Explorers at night with new friends from around the country than it is to hang out with mom and dad.

No offense to London but if you can't find something to do on sea days, you aren't trying.

Let me know if you have any questions, have fun.

Scott

Hi Scott!

Maybe since the 22 year old also is from Chicago, her experiences will be as great as yours! Thanks for the advice. The 18 year old is from Atlanta, and I'm more worried that she will have a great cruise. Unfortunately, not much pool time in Alaska! :) I do hope they have some sort of "get together" for those too old for teen group, but too young for naturalist lectures!:)

The crew is great and the cruise staff will keep them entertained. FYI the guys in the fitness center are always a blast to hang out with.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure they look great too! :)

Gee these are 18 - 22 year olds, they must be very naive or just too innocent not to find 18-25 year old boys. I used to go walking on the Star Princess last year and found folks that age who danced the night away sleeping on the lounge chairs. We also met up with some people whose girls discovered they could use their cruise card to charge drinks at the bar. That was a big surprise to the their parents. And above all that, isn't Princess still called "the Love Boat".

Being on a ship with over 3,000 strangers, my 18 year old was not allowed to wonder the ship alone. She could only go with her 24 year old sister and/or her parents.

There are a lot of crazy people out there. I read many posts before we left about even staff trying to have their way with younger girls. Put a bit of a fright in me.

This is only me, but would you let your 18 year old wonder the streets alone in your city. I would not and do not. The same thing on a ship.

We just returned from the NCL Sun with our daughters, ages 17 & 20. The last time they cruised, they were 11 & 14 so I was worried they might get bored. Far from it-- the younger one loved the whirlpool/sauna/steamroom and went twice a day. The older one brought her MP3 and spent alot of time on a deck chair! Both of them liked the workout room. We didn't insist that they stay with us all the time and I was even hoping hubby and I could have a few meals alone- but they wanted to eat evey single meal with us. (something they would NEVER do at home)

It was great to have so much family time because our real life is so hectic. I was touched to discover that they liked just hanging out with mom and dad. I also discovered that they don't need to be busy all the time. Sometimes they just liked to sleep! I bit my tongue and didn't say "you can sleep at home"

Have a great time- it was fun to spend time as a family and reconnect with the "little girls":)

Ummmm.....time to cut the cord, IMHO. If she were 16 that would be a different story. At her age she has the right to vote, join the military and drink (at least in Canada). She's an adult, dear whether you like it or not......

Sorry if you think the reply is harsh.

I was hoping that someone would comment on this post (I didn't want to be the first one!!)

Obviously I don't know if there are any "special" circumstances with your 18-year old daughter, but based on the assumption that she is a "normal" healthy young woman, IMHO, I think it is WAY too overprotective to not "allow" her to wander the ship alone!!! Is she going away to college? How will she handle that, if she can't even walk around a cruise ship by herself???

I wouldn't mind if the 18 year olds would be out there wandering through the ship alone. Its the 12 to 14 year old boys that worry me. I kind of wish parents would keep them insight. Or better under lock and key.

A typical 18-yr-old would be allowed to go off to college on her own. So, yes, I think she should be trusted to wander about on a cruise ship at that age.

BTW, isn't a tween or tweener a person between 9 and 12 (i.e., before they reach their teen years)?

I agree... when I was 18-22 years old, I certainly would NOT have been wanted to be called a "tweener"!!

As a matter of fact, by the time I was 22 years old, I had already been married for a few years. I was an adult... I behaved like an adult... and I expected people to treat me like an adult.

I think it should be the same for an 18 year old.

I was refering to the 18 year old really as the "tweener". Too old for teen group, but too young to join her cousin in the nightclub scene. Sorry for the poor choice of words. ;) The 22 year old isn't much of a drinker so I doubt she would go alone to the disco or whatever they have.

I think most people got what you meant. I understand the frustration - too old to do the teen thing, and too young to be considered an adult (at least in the US). Sorry you got flamed.

Thanks for your understanding. Just as an FYI........I have found your posts to be very informative and would like to thank you personally! :) You devote a lot of time to helping us "newbies". Thanks.

Details,

I understand where you are coming from. My DH and I were planning a cruise for November on Princess. When DD found out we were going (she turns 18 at the end of July) she wanted to go. But when she found out that she couldn't go to the casino or lounges with us (she doesn't drink, just wanted to hang out) she opted out. As a compromise, we are going on the Carnival Pride, as a family, instead. She can go to the casino and lounges (no alcohol) and be able to use the adult pools on this ship. Mom and Dad hope to go to Hawaii (alone) next!

I am a little confused. Could you possibly explain why she can't sit in a lounge having a non-alcoholic drink. I thought only the casino was ''out of bounds'' to 18-21 year olds.
