Avril Posted October 5, 2012 #1 Share Posted October 5, 2012 Just wondering, how long before a ship sails does HAL normally assign the GTY cabins? I'm sailing on the Nieuw Amsterdam at the end of October and have booked a Balcony GTY (category VH if I remember right) and still haven't gotten my cabin assignment. At least, my express docs still say "To Be Assigned". This is my 3rd HAL cruise but my 1st time booking a GTY. Not that I care where we are at all, just wondering. Super excited for this cruise!!!! :D Thanks!!!! :D
cec5248 Posted October 5, 2012 #2 Share Posted October 5, 2012 We got our cabin assignment last night for our 17 October cruise. That's about normal. Best has been 18 days and a couple times it was at the pier. Good luck...
Krazy Kruizers Posted October 5, 2012 #3 Share Posted October 5, 2012 Some people have gotten their cabin assignment 2 weeks out from the cruise -- some got it just 10 days out. Then some people get their assignments right before they leave home. And a few have gotten their assignment right at the pier from the porter. Jazmyn49 Posted October 5, 2012 #4 Share Posted October 5, 2012 Got ours this morning for a 10/19 cruise. It was not on 'My Reservations' but on the Check In page. Nice upgrade, too. We were on your cruise last fall and enjoyed it so much that we're doing it again, just on a different ship. The Nieuw Amsterdam was fantastic and we found not one thing to complain about but lots that we loved. Great crew, service, food and entertainment. Captain Mercer was super. We'd give that cruise a 10!
sassy~one Posted October 5, 2012 #5 Share Posted October 5, 2012 I'm also waiting, for a 10.26 cruise. I'm really hopeful. Good Luck. I think i paid for an H OV. not real sure. : )
vicocala Posted October 5, 2012 #6 Share Posted October 5, 2012 My last and only cruise with HAL was a balcony guarantee and we learned from the porter at the pier. Best wishes for a great room and a great cruise. I expect I will probably be learning about our December cruise the same way. I hope Santa and HAL are good to us. PathfinderEss Posted October 6, 2012 #8 Share Posted October 6, 2012 Thats the fun of booking a GTY, you could find out tomorrow or maybe not until you get to the pier as KK said. Hopefully you get a nice upgrade.
Cayoooga Posted October 6, 2012 #9 Share Posted October 6, 2012 ;We are still early @ 7 weeks out!! I guess we have a few more weeks of wondering which cabin and if a more favorable opportunity might existent for us :p This is the first time booking a GTY cabin, its adding to the pre-cruise vehemence :p ;)
jtl513 Posted October 6, 2012 #10 Share Posted October 6, 2012 Six of our eight guarantees were assigned at 11 or 10 days out. The other two were at 18 days and 3 days. The curve seems to peak at about 10 days. ALL were upgrades from what we paid for! :)
Herkimer18 Posted October 6, 2012 #11 Share Posted October 6, 2012 Sailing on the NA on Oct 17 and still waiting for assignment!
eandj Posted October 6, 2012 #12 Share Posted October 6, 2012 Our Vh gty for our cruise on Eurodam Sep14 was assigned less than 2 weeks in advance. Drove me nuts waiting..but was certainly a room worthy of the wait. ;)
mfs763 Posted October 6, 2012 #13 Share Posted October 6, 2012 We sail on October 15 and we received our cabin assignment yesterday morning. We were upgraded from a VF guarantee to a VB on Upper Verranda deck.
jaspersnell Posted October 6, 2012 #14 Share Posted October 6, 2012 What is the logic, if any, in GTY cabins. And do they usuall result in an upgrade?
jtl513 Posted October 6, 2012 #15 Share Posted October 6, 2012 And do they usuall result in an upgrade? All 8 of ours have, but I have a feeling that the 9th, which we are now waiting for, will end the streak because it is just a segment of a Grand Voyage. Globaliser Posted October 7, 2012 #16 Share Posted October 7, 2012 What is the logic, if any, in GTY cabins. It makes yield and allocation management easier for the cruise line, because they have a bunch of passengers who are basically saying that within certain constraints (ie there is a minimum grade of cabin they'll accept), they don't much care where on the ship they end up. The cruise line can then be much more flexible when managing late cancellations yet still trying to fill the ship. The benefit for the passenger is the bigger chance of an upgrade to a cabin that's much nicer than the minimum they were prepared to accept. Think of it a bit like an airliner where many of the passengers say they don't want a seat number allocated before check-in, in return for a higher chance of an upgrade. PaulJ Posted October 7, 2012 #17 Share Posted October 7, 2012 We booked a VH guarantee on 8/18 and received our assignment, a VA today, 10/6 for 10/19 sailing.
JimnKaren Posted October 7, 2012 #18 Share Posted October 7, 2012 We aren't sailing until February. Our TA said that the prices are rising for our cruise. From anyone's experience, does that mean that there is less likelihood of an upgrade? Jim
Avril Posted October 9, 2012 Author #19 Share Posted October 9, 2012 Ok, thanks everyone!! Seems like there's no real time when they assign GTY cabins. We're still waiting. I hope that waiting longer means we may get some sort of upgrade (even if it's a small one)!! :D To everyone else who's still waiting, I hope you find out soon and I hope you get a nice upgrade!!!! :D
