Smoking on balconies (Spa Staterooms)

Recommended Posts

We just got cabin assignment for our transatlantic cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam sailing next Monday. :D We've been assigned one of the spa cabins on Deck 10!! I'm a smoker so I'm just wondering, I know I can't smoke inside the cabin but can I smoke on the balcony? I know you can't smoke in the cabin or on the balcony in Carnival's spa cabins and since HAL is owned by Carnival, I'm just wondering if they have the same rules. Also, are there any perks/benefits with a spa cabin?

Thanks!!!! :D

Here's HAL's answer from their FAQs

Our smoking policy reflects our commitment to the comfort of all of our guests. Presently, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and all other indoor areas are designated non-smoking with the exception of:

  • Casino
  • Northern Lights Disco (ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Westerdam & ms Zuiderdam only)
  • Seaview Bar (except that smoking is not permitted in the Seaview Bar on the ms Maasdam, ms Ryndam or ms Statendam)
  • Sports Bar
  • Crow's Nest (except that smoking is not permitted in the Crow’s Nest on the ms Eurodam, ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Westerdam or ms Zuiderdam)

While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed.

Aren't those balconies 'so-called Juliet' balconies?

They don't even have table and chair, do they?

The ones on Deck 11 are, the ones on Deck 10 are regular balconies (I think)!!

I don't know.

That is why I am asking.

I just thought I read that somewhere (mighta been here on cc). That the small(er) balconies are on Deck 11 and the ones that are normal size with tables and chairs are on Deck 10. I really hope that's true, I don't really want a balcony that I can't actually sit, relax and enjoy on!!!!

You can smoke from your balcony as mentioned before, but please be aware of those on the surrounding balconies. Not everyone appreciates a wave of smoking every couple of seconds while they are relaxing.

I myself smoke a cigar every now and then, but I NEVER smoke on my balcony. I always go to the Lido Pool, climb the stairs, grab myself a chair and a nice cocktail and watch the horizon slide by while I enjoy my smoke. And you don't bother anyone with your smoking ;-)

Thanks, and of course!! :D I'm always considerate of our neighbours and I don't smoke a lot on the balcony anyway (as I'm usually out and about around the ship having fun)!! It's just nice to have smoke in the morning in my PJs and at night before bed (and maybe a couple of other times during the day). I would never sit out there and smoke all day and night!!

Hope this helps. If you have a VQ, then you have a small 46 sq ft balcony. If you have a VT, then it is the "standing" balcony.

"Spa cabins (Category VQ, VT) Avg sq ft cabin: 174 Balcony: 46

Balcony is 5.5 feet deep."

"Category VT has a smaller standing room only balcony."

OP, please let us know how you liked it. I'll be shocked if I don't get assigned one of those on my cruise.

I will, not to worry!! :D You'll probably have your cabin assignment by the time I get back, let me know what you get!! :D

The photo below is of the Eurodam, but it appears to me the balconies on deck 10 have chairs on them. They appear quite different than the Juliet balconies on deck 11.

I've been on the Eurodam twice and I do remember those smaller, rounded edge balconies!!! :D I remember thinking how cute they look, haha!! :D

Even the Juliet balconies allow for getting some fresh air.

The ones where you can sit down certainly are better but any source of air (window or door) is better than none, IMO.

Enjoy.

I guess you're right!! :) I just like being able to sit on my balcony and enjoy when I get up in the (usually mid to late) morning and before I go to bed!! Of course, I can always sit on the floor of the balcony without a chair!! :D

And that would be fine if they were priced accordingly. They are priced mid range in the balconies IIRC and that is just wrong. They are a fancy ocenaview room, nothing else. They should be priced like a lanai room IMO.

Thank you. This is one of our biggest concerns -- that a neighbor balcony dweller will also be a smoker. We can only hope that everyone has your sensitivity and consideration!

I already said I'm considerate to my neighbours (see post below)!! :D Unfortunatly, it seems others don't have the same levels of consideration and that makes people think all of us smokers are inconsiderate!! :(

Congratulations to Avril (the OP) and everyone on this thread:)

Op - you might not have realized it but Smoking in a thread topic line is so very HOT and can get people going.

I think your replies have gone a long way from preventing it:) Well done indeed IMO:D

On our 26 day cruise last May we had a cigar smoker two balconies down from us. He had a ritual, every time we were ready to leave port, he light his cigar to watch the final hour of bording and casting off. The smell was so terrible, that it hung on our balcony quite a while after we set sail. Our nieghbors complained of it also, but I guess the guy had a right to smoke his cigar. I had hoped he would leave after the first leg of the trip, but no luck.

DH refused to let it ruin our trip, but we were both miffed. The joy of a balcony is watching the activity in the ports. So please, if you are a smoker, realize that balconies really aren't like outside. The smoke does annoy six to eight balconies around you.
