mort&fran Posted October 29, 2012 #1 Share Posted October 29, 2012 Trying to plan how much local currencies to bring on our Panama Canal cruise (San Diego to FLL). (I hate credit card conversion fees! But I also don't like to force locals to incur conversion charges if they cannot readily use dollars.) We plan to take the ship's DIY to Antigua; do the guides and vendors and cafes in Antigua accept dollars? Do the cafes and restaurants accept credit cards? ThanX! Northern Aurora Posted November 10, 2012 #3 Share Posted November 10, 2012 We have done three full transits of the Panama Canal, and have never converted US dollars to local currencies. We have used credit cards for some purchases, but have not have problems using US dollars. We were in Antigua last spring. We used US dollars for all of our purchases at stores, and also used them at a wonderful restaurant. My memory is that most stores had sign indicating that they accepted VISA and MC. Rare Azulann Posted November 12, 2012 #4 Share Posted November 12, 2012 I am getting $100. worth of Quetzals for my day in Antiqua from my local bank, Wells Fargo. I am also getting pesos for Mexico. I will be using USD for my other ports of call for my full transit of the Panama Canal. I usually buy things from street vendors, markets, etc. but that is just me.
