shark with a laser Posted October 31, 2012 #1 Share Posted October 31, 2012 News report indicates that Venice is currently flooded by the seasonal acqua alta. The article says Venice is most at risk for this flooding in the spring and fall. I'm on a cruise on the Spirit next May that ends in Venice and I'll be flying out of Venice to return home. Do the cruise ships still dock when the city is flooded? If no, what happens with cruises that are scheduled to end in Venice? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2224769/Soaked-stone-Streets-Venice-submerged-annual-deluge-acqua-alta-flooding.html
JohnIreland Posted October 31, 2012 #2 Share Posted October 31, 2012 The area where the ships dock is not in the flooding area.
dalgirl Posted October 31, 2012 #3 Share Posted October 31, 2012 We were in Venice in mid May and there was no flooding. There weather is similar to the southern US where I reside - spring for us is March and April - May is summer time:) It should be sunny and warm, excluding any chance of a normal rainy day. You should be fine. Yes, the cruise ships do dock in the flood - people tour there in the flood and residents go about their business. The city puts in walk boards. If you search on the web you will most likely see this.
KirkNC Posted October 31, 2012 #4 Share Posted October 31, 2012 The flooding is more likely in St Marks area then near the ship.

zqvol Posted October 31, 2012 #6 Share Posted October 31, 2012 Flooding can happen any time. We were there in early August and there was a little flooding in St. Mark's square. Venice does not shut down if it floods. They are used to it and just work around it.
Don Haynes Posted October 31, 2012 #7 Share Posted October 31, 2012 At the moment Venice is one island at a time raising their city up a meter or so. They have done so in the past and will most likely do so in the future. But don't ask me how they do it, they just do.
cruisegirl06 Posted November 1, 2012 #8 Share Posted November 1, 2012 Aqua Alta...an amusing surprise to us on our first trip to Venice. We were there in November and had the floods each morning - elevated walkways put out and shop owners pushing water out of their shops. We were pretty envious of the people with Rubber boots who could just dance through the water and avoid the "traffic" on the walkways. Very unique experience (to us), but Venice knows how to handle it:) as others mentioned, the port is a good way from where we experienced the high water, and tourist areas are well equipt to deal with it
