On the last cruise I was on (Oct. 2012, DCL Fantasy) most men had dress shirts, ties, with some jackets. A few,and I do mean FEW, were all decked out in their formal wear. In June, 2012, on the Uniworld River Princess, most men wore a jacket to dinner and women a dressy top with slacks. There was a couple that must have had some serious luggage! They were turned out most evenings in gala wear.

Years ago on a Carnival cruise, there was a heavy set patron, male, who wore the same shorts to dinner every evening. He was a topic of conversation mainly due to the amount of food he inhaled and his loud manner.

I'm in the "I don't care what other people wear" camp.

I didn't vote because the poll doesn't allow multiple selections. I really didn't pay attention to what folks at other tables were wearing, but at our table it ran from sport jacket and dress shirt to tuxes for the guys. Pretty much all of the ladies wore nice dresses but no gowns.

I just got back Thursday from a cruise on the Elation. I always get early seating for dinner but did notice the late seating were dressed up more. I don't care what people wear. I don't understand why people say it ruin their cruise. If you want to dress up and get picture thats find with me. If you want to wear shorts that is find also.

I very much agree with this! We saw a lot of people dressed up...but a few that were a bit more casual and I didn't care one bit. Everyone has the right to enjoy their cruise the way they want to. I personally enjoyed getting dressed up...but didn't pay much attention to how anyone else was dressed. If people focus on those kind of things on their cruise...they are cruising for the wrong reasons!

I don't know, we "people watch" when on the ship, and on Ellegent night we look at how people are dressed.

Now we would never tell anyone they were wrong, and it does not bother us, but it is fun looking how people are dressed.

Slutty, casual, formal, like they fell out of a wedding.

The real funny thing is the people that are not dressed up and they go and get pictures at the really elegent backdrops like the grand piano and they are wearing a t-shirt and blue jeans. just kind of funny to see the contrast of them and the back ground, but to each their own.

Ha ha yes this is true! I am not going to lie, I did see some of that with the picture back drops and found it kind of funny. There was one girl that wore the shortest, tight dress I have ever seen! She also had about a mile length of fake hair in. That was slightly entertaining. Didn't bother me, but did provide for a little extra entertainment as we waited to go in the dining room.

First. Thank you so much for this poll MrPete!!

I believe several of you misunderstood the intent. No judgement calls here.

As a newbie, I had asked in another thread what THE MAJORITY of people will be wearing on "elegant night" in the MDR.....Not what Carnival's official dress code is, or what you think people should wear, or an invitation to expound on your god-given right to wear whatever the hell you wish, or to insinuate that even broaching the subject is being pretentious...

just a simple question so that we newbies may decide what to pack.

I feel more informed now, thank-you. :)

I usually wear a short dress, like I would wear to a wedding. DH wears dress pants and a dress shirt, sometimes a tie. The vast majority of people wear dressed similar to us. We only saw a few people in tuxes and gowns. All were older guests. Some men in suits, but most men we saw were not wearing jackets. We always cruise 7 or 8 day cruises in the summer.

When we started cruising, there were more people dressed elegantly on Elegant Night, but I notice that's starting to slip (oddly, it seems to get worse with luggage restrictions on airlines....;) ) and men in nice shirts, pants and some ties escorting women in cocktail/prom dresses or black pants & sparkly tops are more the norm. On our last cruise on the Ecstasy, in the MDR the early seating was much more casual than it seemed the later one was. DD (my cruisin' buddy) and I use only carry ons, and DD has a wonderful black XOXO gown that can be squished up with no wrinkles. She does, however, wear black sandals with it (not flip flops!) since heels take up space. I wear either a black dress, or black tuxedo pants with a sequin top. Women can never go wrong with a little black dress (Or, for me, a large tent-like black dress!!:D) and the bling needed to dress it up takes up very little space!

Our last cruise in October on Fantasy, DH was the only one wearing a suit and tie. The majority of the men had tropical ****s with kahki pants and a few had on a shirt and tie. Women had on nice dresses, but only a handful were cocktail.

I rented my DH a tux with a black jacket and a white dinner jacket from Carnival's Formalities. Very handy! I noticed many people (men, woman and children) dressed in formal wear as we waited to enter the MDR. We did late seating so maybe that made a difference.

Great poll idea!

That might be the funniest typo I've seen on here :)

Our last cruise was our honeymoon and as we had an at home wedding where hubby wore jeans, we went all out and rented him a tux (he doesn't even own dress pants to that was the way to go) and we had a blast at dinner then playing "James Bond" in the casino (and winning!).

I voted "other" as didn't really notice what most cruisers were wearing - we had YTD and dined with the couple in the cabin above us - he wore a shirt and slacks - ran into a group of older gentlemen in the elevator all decked out in white tuxes - this had been their annual tradition for years... other than them though, I paid no attention to anyone else.

DH and I have been on 11 cruises. Our 12th is in 3wks! We have seen anywhere from formal to shirt/khakis for the men and dress pants and a nice dress shirt for the ladies. It doesn't matter to me what other people are wearing. Personally though I prefer not to see anybody in daisy dukes ANYTIME!! lol

Other - I was too busy enjoying my vacation to care what anyone else was wearing.

ok seriously, people were dressed fine. I didn't scan everyone up and down and I didn't see any 'extreme' type outfits. For me it's not about what everyone else is wearing.

The one person who said the 'majority' were wearing shorts, ballcaps and daisy dukes. I think you lie, or have never been on CCL and ... well, ... just, ... well.

I agree! There was a mix of dress, but those wearing shorts and ballcaps did not represent the norm. On our cruises, most people were dressed very nice...some very formal, but most less (coat and ties for the men and dresses for the Women).

I agree with you on that one. On our last cruise on the Victory I screwed up on our second elegant night and thought it was the next night. I was dressed up enough so they let me in the main dining room, but DH was not allowed in. He was wearing khakis and a polo type shirt. He didn't mind one bit because he hates elegant night, and just does it because I like it so much.

On our last cruise it was a 9 day MR cruise, on the first Elegant night my SIL and BIL wore tux and gown. The second Elegant night was our actual 50th. anniversary night and I wore my summer tux and my wife was in a very pretty cocktail dress so we could have a formal portrait taken. We also ate that night in the Steakhouse and everyone there was dressed up, some in dress uniforms. We did not see a lot of people dressed up nor did we care....we were dressed appropriately for the occasion!

I voted other - I see a wide variety...we choose to wear either a suit and tie or jacket and button up (DH) and a dressy pant suit or cocktail dress (me) for Elegant Night. Others wear the same as they do when it's not elegant night. I don't necessarily care what people wear, but I can appreciate it when the MDR staff asks people to stick to the MDR dress code. Plenty of other food on board if you don't want to.:D

I have not seen anyone in cutoffs and a tank top for Elegant Night. On our Pride cruises, people were turned away for not following the MDR dress code on Elegant Night.

My last cruise was on the Paradise and it was by far the most casually dressed, even on regular nights. There were far more people dressed elegantly on my other cruises. I always dress up as do my travelmates. We don't really notice the people who don't dress up but we do of course notice all the others who do, as you should.

Advice for the newbies, if you're worried about being over-dressed, don't. You will see some tuxes and lots of gorgeous gowns.
