Smoking on celebrity

We just returned from a fantastic cruise on the Summit. Only problem(a major one!) was that our neighbors were smoking on their balcony! We tried complaining to our room steward and the guest relations desk (3 times!) and finally got it stopped for a couple days but by the last evening they were back to smoking! Couldn't be out on our deck at sunset or in the am. Very frustrating!

Has anyone been successful in getting rude & inconsiderate neighbors to stop smoking? This was our third celebrity cruise & never had this problem & don't want to have it in the future

So sorry this happened Cathy. I've had to do that once on Celebrity too -- but fortunately for me, one call took care of the problem. My advice is that we all need to be relentless on this issue. Identify the location of the offender and report them every single time -- and insist that Guest Relations (up to Hotel Director) take your complaint seriously!

When RC released Independence of the Seas, we booked a beautiful center hump cabin for a b2b -- almost two years in advance. A few months before our cruise, RC changed their smoking policy, banning smoking in cabins, but permitting it on balconies. Needless to say, we were surrounded by smokers for the whole two weeks. Not only were the cabins on either side of us inhabited by smokers, but they brought their friends and family from inside cabins out to smoke with them! After all that time and money, we were really unable to enjoy the beautiful balcony that we had so looked forward to. :(

The next year we tried Celebrity, and we were amazed by the difference. We have only sailed on RC a couple of times since, and then only in aft cabins -- which, for me at least, seem to have less problems with drifting smoke. But, if I've booked and paid for for a non-smoking balcony (as we do on X), I never intend to be driven indoors again!

We had similar issues on the Silhouette. We smelled it day one before even leaving port. Our cabin steward actually walked in as we complained about it and he smelled it. He said he would tell the guest relations. Day two we smelled it, so I went down to guest relations and they said it had been logged and that they would send a letter that evening. I did notice a 'letter' on the 'document holder' outside the door that night. No smoking for a few days. Guest Relations did call a few times to check up. We were good until day six when they were back at it. I called guest relations and they said they would send someone up.

I know you can't control everyone. I hope Celebrity enforces the $250 cleaning fee, and should really consider just throwing people off the ship.

Before I get attacked, I am all for smokers rights, but the rules are clear: no smoking on verandah or in rooms. There are smoking areas on the ship, and I have no issue with those. I would not cruise on a line that allowed smoking on the verandah (because I like sitting out on the verandah and I don't want to smell smoke).

So, be persistant, report it as soon as it happens, and every time it happens. I wasn't rude to guest relations, but they certainly knew that I wasn't happy.

Personally I would not involve the room steward (as they have to deal with those smokers face to face for the entire cruise) but contact the front desk immediately specifically asking and noting who I had spoken with. If nothing was done then I'd go down to the front desk and ask to speak to the hotel director.

We had smokers on the balcony next to us on Solstice - I reported it on the first day and then I took the Daily, cut out the written warning about the fine, took a yellow highliter and then taped it to their door. They never smoked again.

The past 2 nighter on Connie - as we pulled into port pre-dawn - I stepped onto the balcony and right off again - smoke. Went back out and 6 cabins ahead of us was a man standing at the railing smoking. And yes it was floating right back to us - I would have said something but as many people were still sleeping and I would have had to raise my voice to be heard plus the cruise was almost over - I did nothing but steamed at his poor manners.

I will not ever let someone else ruin my balcony experience due to their breaking of the rules, so if this were an ongoing issue - I'd be making noise at the front desk.

I smoke and we sailed on Carnival last year and had a "balcony" - no way 2 people could actually use it as it was very small - anyway you can smoke on Carnivals balconies, I only smoked a few times out there usually at like 3 or 4 AM if something woke me up.

I won't smoke on my X balcony because it is against the rules and there look to be plenty of places to smoke anyway, not like the smoking area is 2 miles away or anything. My wife does not smoke but sitting in a open area bar with smokers does not bother her.

really not their responsibilty to handle smoking situations.

a balcony and not being able to use it:eek:

I personally don't think that the $250 fine is deterrent enough. They should make it $1,000 for first offense and thrown off the ship for the 2nd offense.

You should write a letter to corporate and explain to them that you were unable to use your balcony and ask them why they didn't enforce their rules, so that you could have enjoyed the cruise that you paid for.

When we reported a smoker in the next cabin, Security was there in about 3 min knocking (loudly) on their door. If it happens again, I think I will try asking Guest Relations to transfer/connect me with Security to report the smoker as it doesn't seem they are as proactive as they once were.

At least you can call and complain about cigarette smoke. We had a balcony next to a woman who drenched herself in perfume. The smell was so bad, I had to go back in my cabin a couple of times. We could tell they were at the Captains Club event without seeing them. We couldn't think of a polite way to comment, so we just lived with it.

I get it - I'm sensitive to aromas and it is an issue because as we age, our ability to discern when enough is enough diminishes. And I'm aged, trust me. However, as annoying as it is, too much perfume is at least not harmful to our health, like sidestream cigarette smoke is. Once, though, I commented on someone's perfume - it was actually quite nice and not overwhelming - and the woman was so embarrassed because she thought she might have on too much. Maybe a word would be a good idea - it is hard to tell - sort of like telling someone their slip is showing. Do you, or don't you? If they can fix it, you tell, if not, maybe you don't. Well, I've rambled enough for now. I hope we never have smokers in the balcony next to us, because I hate ruining someone else's vacation, but don't want mine ruined either.

I will take that over powering aroma over the passenger on my cruise on Eclipse from another culture that felt bathing and deodorant were not necessary. The O is supposed to stay with the B but in his case it did not. When he left the elevator it would still reek of his BO. It got to the point if I saw him I would opt out of riding. EWWWWWWW.

I have asthma and both smoke and perfume are triggers. There was one time at a theater performance that a lady in front of me had bathed in perfume  - at least it smelled that way. I started getting short of breath, and we had to leave the theater.

The no smoking rule on Celebrity is what keeps us loyal to Celebrity. Now, if only we could get a no heavy perfume rule!!

Thanks for your comments. I did call celebrity and was given a number to call for "post cruise issues".

I think calling security sounds like the best idea which I will do if this ever happens again to us. I even tried spraying lysol towards their balcony & they didn't get the hint!

It can be harmful, as it can trigger a severe asthma attack. My son was hospitalized for one such attack.

The Captain needs to make the announcement that for the health, safety and comfort of your fellow passengers smoking is prohibited in cabins, balconies and public areas of the ship.

There only places for smokers is on the open decks on the port side of the ship.

Anyone who defies our smoking policy will be escorted from the ship.

We have been on other ships where smoking is allowed. Even though you try to avoid those areas there is still the smell of smoke on the clothing. People sitting next to us in the dining room weren't smokers but their clothes always reeked from smoke because of being in the casino or a bar that allowed it.

The same happens in the theater. You get there a few minutes early to get a seat and then other smokers or people that came from the casino sit close to you.

Don't like the smell of it and the smoke irritates my eyes and causes my nasal passages to swell up.

I prefer X for their smoking policy and that is the main reason that they are our cruise line of choice. Would like to sail on the other lines as they have a lot to offer but I don't want the smoke.

Too bad they don't really enforce their policy like they should and it doesn't just apply to their smoking policy.

Lois, I agree that the cabin attendant shouldn't have to be involved, but Celebrity doesn't agree. On our Reflection cruise a couple weeks ago, when I called to complain of a smoker, Guest Relations told me they would inform my attendant that we smelled smoke from a nearby balcony. (We couldn't see the smoker, but the smell was very strong.) The poor attendant came immediately knocking, saying 'You have a problem?" and I had to explain all over to him. He came out on our balcony to try to see for himself, and of course, he couldn't, either. Fortunately, it stopped after that.

WOW...I am quite surprised that was Guest Relations response to you:eek:

I thought someone in Management and/or security would be the

one to handle it:confused:
