Smokiness of the Ships

Recommended Posts

Iam not the one who started talking about the "ashes" going to their balcony.
Interesting....again you quote something that I never said.... It certainly looks like most smokers and non smokers alike can answer questions and relate their experiences....just not you???

Then try all the bars in California or Southern Ireland they are without exception non smoking.

I do not believe all the bars on the ships should be non smoking but some of them should, it is time people recognised that smoke does not stay in the designated area of the bar only.

hawaii too

Having a no-smoking area in a room is like having a no-peeing area of a pool! :D :D
LOL! :p

Again, thanks for the information. It sounds like housekeeping does a great job in eliminating smoke from the cabins, and that there is plenty of space on board for everyone to have a nice time. :)

leahjade: Carnival did have one ship which was non smoking...they even put people off if they lit up onboard.(In a port, not over the edge of the railing! :p ) But, the cruise line discontinued the non smoking ship a couple of years ago, I think. Now the Paradise is just a regular ship.

yes, Carnival did have the Paradise for several years as non-smoking. However, it has been reclassified as a regular smoking and non-smoking ship due to popular demand.

Then where is the area of the Bars and Casino where the Non Smokers can go and not be invaded by secondary smoke which is harmfull for their Health.

If you are truely worried about the smoking situation then the best bet is to look for the Voyager class ships on RCL. They seem to have enough room that there is always a good place away from smoke. If you want a cruise with very limited smoking then you need to look at lines other than the mass market cruise lines. Probably the most inexpensive line with restrictive smoking policies is Oceania. They only allow smoking in two designated areas of the ship, one bar and an outside area. No cabin or balcony smoking and it is enforced. The casino is even smoke free. Their ships seem to be sailing full so there must be a market out there for a cruise with restrictive smoking areas. Of course they sail many different itineraries which IMO was Carnival's downfall. Wrong cruise line for it and only two itineraries. Sorry Mark it wasn't "popular demand" just the economics of Carnivals market. Popular demand is that Oceania has grown from one to three ships in three years. Seems there is a market out there if you have the right product.

I'm the one that mentioned ashes being blown onto my balcony. So what about it? It's certainly true. I was not making a statement to start an argument, I was simply stating my past 2 balcony experiences.

I have a real hard time understanding WHY some smokers get SO DARN offended and hostile that not everyone likes to breathe smoke! The OP just asked some very real questions concerning a trip he wants to take and should recieve honest answers from people who have been on that ship.

I, for one, have a severe allergy to second hand smoke and really don't look forward to having an asthma attack while on vacation, I try to plan accordingly and stay out of areas that have smoking & having some information ahead of time helps me to plan. We purposely booked the first hump cabin on our next cruise so there won't be a balcony just forward of us- and threfore hopefully no smoke blowing into our cabin. The dinning rooms won't be a problem but it would be nice to have a club or bar that I don't have to worry about! I realize that you have the right to smoke BUT what about my rights not to wheeze?? I'm the one not able to go into the clubs and bars without an extra dose of benedryl!

There are always smokers that will be rude just as there are always non-smokers that can be just as rude. I am a smoker and adhere to the policies where ever I am. However, on my first cruise on the Enchantment, I was sitting in the Schooner bar (which was all smoking a the time). Bingo was being held at the aft of the ship (don't remember the name of the area) but when it let out a group of women came through and began coughing and waving their hands as they walked by me all the while making undue remarks. Now mind you, there were two exits they could have used....one through the non smoking area and the other through the smoking lounge. I have no sympathy for those that choose to expose themselves when other options are available.

I was on the Radiance this past December and found that the Schooner bar is now all non-smoking. I'm disappointed, but stil managed to adhere to the rules...just take a short walk to the smoking area. :)

Don't you love the hand wavers and coughers. They make "me" sick. There was one time I was on the Celebrity Century in the casino minding my own business "smoking" no one around me, when this woman who is walking her child through the casino, taps me on the shoulder and tells me that I cannot smoke there, I am on the wrong side of the ship.

I respect everyone's rights, you have the right to smoke or not. Do not be rude to me, if I am bothering you, I will gladly put out my cigarette, if you huff and puff and do wavy dances, I will light another.

Just how smokey will the Grandeur be? Are the Smoking/Non smoking areas well defined and adhered to? Will the rooms smell like smokers have been in there(I was really surprised smoking was allowed in all the rooms.) Our rooms are verandahs at the end of the long corridor on deck 7....will smoke blow back and make the balcony unusuable?

We were on the Grandeur a couple of years ago for a Trans Atlantic crossing. It wasn't bad at all. We were unable to spend a lot of time on our balcony, however, because the seas were so rough and it was cold most of the time. For our other experiences, if your next-door neighbors are smokers and do so on their verandah (so as not to smoke up their cabin) you will most likely notice the smoke. Also, errant cigarette butts, spent matches, etc. can land on your verandah from above. You can't say anything to your neighbors about smoking their cigars or cigarettes because they are within their rights to do so. Maybe cigar smoking should be limited to an enclosed venue, like the cigar lounges found on many ships.

Walking through some of the lounge areas to get to the non-smoking areas can be futile.

I have found that RCI ships are more non-smoker friendly than some other lines, like Celebrity.

A ship may have only 3-4 bars, a lot fewer than Cali or S. Ireland. Maybe what can be asked for is better ventilation. The fact is that most smokers drink...and where do drinkers go....

I have a sneaky suspicion that if 1 bar on a ship was non-smoking it would be visited sparingly, which would make it unnecessary. Just my humble opinion.

I am never offended by anyone who doesn't want to breathe smoke, I completely understand the dilemma. I am a smoker, but, I always try to be considerate of everyone around me, I just hope my consideration and kindness are reciprocated.

Stillfrantic,

I was on the Radiance this past Feb. with my best friend Robyn (I think you've met LOL) and the smoke wasn't too bad. There were a few bars that were non- smoking and most people respected the non-smoking side of the ship.

My DH smokes and therefore had to go on the balcony. There was no way that I would let him smoke in the room. Our neighbours didn't seem to be bothered by the smoke. (Not that I knew of anyways.)

Sharonna

p.s. I think you should add that tagline, "Tortured by Mark about smoking". LOL
...We have never smelled smoke in our stateroom...
Well, your stateroom must not have been anywhere near the funnel on that ship on your post. It sure looks like "smoke" coming from that stack. Worse yet, it is smoke from diesel fuel combustion. ;)

The ships are designed to minimize and even try to avoid the smoke from the single smoke stack. I think it was the QM2 that had to have a major new innovation for the smokestack to this reason to keep it from being too high.

As for smoking, looks like I've got to dig out my double barrel, heavy duty super soaker. I need to practice my aim. ;)
