Fire on Carnival Triumph. No engines, running on emergency generators.

I live alone and just spent two days with no water due to the recent snowstorm in the northeast. It's the worst possible thing you can imagine! I have two toilets, and neither flushed ....I tried melting snow on the gas range to put in the toilets! And , of course, no showers! Ugh! The triumph must smell like......very, very stressful for two days, I can't imagine a week!!!

Always fill your bathtub up before a big storm like that. We did, didn't need it, but better safe than sorry.

 

Keeping this on topic, it is too bad that dumping a bucket of water down the toilet wouldn't work to flush the toilets on the ship now that there is cold water. Hopefully, they can get more services restored to more areas of the ship.

I just saw a piece out of Indianapolis from a woman who's sister is on board. She waited 3 hours for an onion sandwich! The people in front of her were hoarding food. She also reported people were sleeping in the deck chairs and had brought mattresses on deck as they have no AC. NBC reported tonight that only 5 toilets on the entire ship were working. We'll hear everything, I"m sure. One can NOT imagine what they and the crew are going through. Just pray people keep their cool and people don't get too ugly. It could turn into a riot over food, water, bathroom, sleeping areas, etc.

I saw that piece on CNN too. There is a lot of misrepresentation in the media (surprise!) of this incident. The fact of the matter is they have had power to certain areas of the ship, and toilets in the majority of the ship are operational. Nobody is pooping in bags and buckets and no one is starving. Are they eating fillet mignon? No but they are not starving.

 

I feel sorry for them seeing that their vacation was ruined, but some people need to get a grip, things could be ALOT worse. I mean come on, the bars are free and flowing and they get a few extra days on their cruise, beats any day at work!:rolleyes:

I've heard all sorts of conflicting stories. You have to take into consideration the people that are just wanting to "stir the pot" per say as well. I'm sure once everyone gets home there's going to be all sorts of pics and videos to tell the story.

 

There was a pic on one of our local news stations' Facebook page that someone on the Legend took that showed what appeared to be sheets on deck 10 aft sort of rigged up like tents, looked like for shade. Makes sense to me, if you're going to be out there hanging out all day, one may wish to get out of the sun.

just watched two video's on CNN . One guy is telling the story of the call from his wife. He says in almost two days all she got was one pb/jelly sandwich and bottle of water. The other video a lady on the ship was saying how well they were eating.

 

Without a doubt I would be a basket case without my Ac, toilet, warm shower, did I say Ac! But it is going to be interesting how people on the same ship tell the story.

It is all going to depend on how much "Kool Aid" they are willing to drink.

yes, they did poop in bags...it has been documented via texts from the ship...unless of course everyone is lying

That was in a calm port on a ship with power and stabilization.

 

So what you are saying is life boats work in Theory, in a controlled environment, calm seas and every system working correct.

 

That would explain why they could not use the life boats on the other side of the Concordia,

 

I always they were for emergency use. Good thing this was not an emergency.

According to Carnival it wasn't , funny how the shipyard is there and that is where the ship will be worked on

 

Funny how the coast guard said that was the easiest place to get too because of currents and wind direction. But I guess Carnival paid off the coast guard.

Carnival should have sent one of their ships empty and used the lifeboats to transfer passengers to the rescue ship. Imagine having to endure such conditions...really feeling for the people stuck on the Triumph. Carnival's meager compensation is nothing for what these people are putting up with.

As for the compensation, what are the passengers really getting?

 

a refund for the cruise that Carnival could not finish delivering

 

not being charged for purchases made at the bars and resturants,

 

not being charged for excursions you could not do at the end of the cruise, and the ones you did get to do,

 

and a discount on another cruise,

 

So really they are getting a discount/free new cruise is all, and a refund of the charges for a cruise that Carnival could not finish delivering.

 

I wonder what about the excursions that people might have taken in Cozomel, are they going to refund that also?

I understand why Carnival would want to take its pax to USA instead of Mexico

but Wont say they are not going to Mobile over Galveston for Carnivals convience to get the repairs done

I would be interested to know, from someone who really knows what s/he is talking about (Aquahound?), how much more difficult or lengthy it would have been to tow the Triumph to Galveston instead of Mobile? In other words, how much does the fact that Mobile has a shipyard that can repair the Triumph play into the decision to go there, even though that will be more inconvenient for (at least) the passengers who drove to the port?

 

I have my suspicions, of course, but it would be nice to hear from someone who actually knows a lot about currents, towing, etc.

If the passengers were in danger, the lifeboats would be launched. The fire was extinguished, so there was no need to evacuate the ship.

 

Why put 4,000 people into the sea if there is no need?

Just read an article out of LA, quoting the commander of the Coast Guard boat escorting the Triumph say transporting passengers off is too dangerous, the ship has been listing to one side as waves crash upon the hull. The Captain of Triumph has not requested they have to board.

When does listing become dangerous on a ship with no power? At best, many will be seasick no doubt?

I'm not an expert, but this was discussed upthread and the concensus was that Galveston was 100+ miles further. Also, the wind/current was more favorable for Mobile. She had in fact drifted 90 miles north in day. Since the tugs are only towing at 6 knots or so it stands to reason they can reach Mobile significantly faster than Galveston.

I did see that! One reson I said I would miss my toilet. Me and 12 year old grandchild were talking. I scoop cat poop, put in walmart bags and throw in garbage. Stinks to high heaven!!! Can only imagine walking down a hall with bags of poop in the hall for thousands of people.

I am sure the story will be told different ways, but no way can you put a good spin on smell and toilet issues for me.

When does listing become dangerous on a ship with no power? At best, many will be seasick no doubt?

A moderate list is uncomfortable but not dangerous... the last NCL ship I was on could tolerate a list of 48 degrees, or more than halfway to perpendicular. I suspect most modern cruise ships are similar.
