Fire on Carnival Triumph. No engines, running on emergency generators.

Did you see how the guy jumped in and didn't let him answer the question about lost wages for passengers? I would guess that was a lawyer making sure the marketing VP didn't say too much.

"I'm sorry, we need to get back now".

WTH was that, Carnival??

I know it was closed, I did say for FUN, I don't recall any of the table games taking power, just cards and chips, again play for fun to pass the time.

I have been reading this thread for 2 days. My son is a musician on the Triumph. They have performed every day in the casino. I talked to him an hour ago and he had just finished a 2 hour set. He has been working all night some nights on "flashlight duty." He worked facilitating customs today. They really are trying to keep things as positive as possible.

Thank your son for all his work! Tell him that there are many people who appreciate his effort! I have no involvement in this situation (no family on board, no Triumph cruise scheduled, etc.) but I am really happy to hear that the crew has stepped up to the occasion. All of the reports that I am hearing are praising the crew. Tell your son to pass it along to his fellow crew members.

LOL, what advantages would a company have "leaving" the US for places such as Panama and the Bahamas?

They are not positive advantages to consumers, other than price. If you think the "flag" countries give two flying ****s about anything other than the check clearing, you got another thing coming.

Well for one thing you cannot register a ship under the US flag which was not constructed in the US ..

Like the Titanic , which was an Irish built ship registered (flagged) in the UK and owned by a US company

Shipping can get a little complex at times

Oh and the ships Band was not crew..

Missed the press conference, can anyone provide a summary?

Not a great deal.

  • once docked will be 15 - 20 minutes before people start coming off
  • confirm previous transportation plans
  • crew compensation:
    • short time left, make whole
    • longer time, reassign
    • deck & engineering crews will stay aboard to make ready transfer to yard
    • others will head to local hotels

[*]question about compensation for passenger lost wages caused abrupt termination of the press conference

Interesting to read the Reddit account; the lady is saying that her toilet worked most of the time, it wasn't as bad as some accounts have had it, at least one person tried to fake an injury so she might get evacuated, the crew has done a great job, no real food shortages but long lines, a couple of laptops were stolen from the charging areas, and there is talk of a class action lawsuit. And she also says she actually had a good time!

All of the concerns are legitimate. This guy isn't going to make any commitments for a wage settlement. It would be stupid for him to do that.

Instead of refusing to address it they should say that they are aware that it might be an issue for some of their passengers and they haven't made any decision on the topic at this point.

Marketing 101, show empathy and acknowledge the issue without making any commitments.

It was backing away to avoid making any legal commitment on national tv. That would have happened with any exec in that situation.

And a very wize move if I say so,, Captain Arthur Rostron on board the Carpathia hand the right idea , he refused to talk to the press and would not let them aboard the ship. You may recall that the Titanic Survivors gave him and his crew a medal ...

CNN live interview with 16 year old Haley who started to cry for a moment before composing herself. Poor thing. :(

I wonder if people will remember the distress some people faced on this cruise when they decide on whether to take children who are too young to even remember a vacation or recent pregnant women debating on how to skirt the 24 week rule needless to mention the normal challenges of avoiding norovirus and flu. Apparently 10 cruises suffered disabling problems last year. Yes not all on Carnival and statistically low but it can happen.

It is funny, I would swear they interviewed Haley earlier today around noon and she was 10 and her friend was 12, one was wearing yellow coat the other red/pink sweat shirt (that is how the CNN reporter identified them) now she is 16 (I heard this interview also when she cried)

The girl interviewed earlier today was Rebecca daughter of Larry Poret also on board, and her mother is one of women on land who've been continuously interviewed since Monday.

The Haley I referred to is Haley Meyer (16) whose parents are both on land and just interviewed.

My point is if a 16 yr old can break down, imagine the very young on that ship. We know the Rebecca (12) also was frightened and crying the first couple of days due to the situation and conditions on board. And there are people who had it much worse.

A prime example of why Carnival should have had a professional media relations person handling the press conferences, rather than a tired, over-stressed executive.

The condition of the ship and its equipment shall be maintained to conform with the... ..regulations to ensure that the ship in all respects will remain fit to proceed to sea without danger to the ship or persons on board. 50AC SOLAS 2009 CH1 reg 11.

Looks like they had month to resolve it.

That guy was out there to give status. Not to discuss legalities.

It's been attempted, though. Norwegian did it and while it's still in service, they haven't done it again.

It's probably not cost effective to support rates as they are, even if the building requirement was waived.
