Fire on Carnival Triumph. No engines, running on emergency generators.

So...this voting thing. I've been wondering about something for days now. Do those who so proudly wave their shares of Carnival stock actually vote stockholder issues or even bother to fill out their proxy? Just curious. Or is it a matter of that OBC thing?

(I'm frankly baffled by some of the "hurrah Carnival" that I've seen and I've jumped to the conclusion that some of it may be because some people own stock??? Am I wrong??? I've only sailed Carnival to this point because I'm frugal to a fault. And yeah, I'm rethinking that.)

I've been wondering about the voting here and there. Also wondering why CCL shareholders would be defending Carnival when their stock is taking another dive.

I'm frugal, too, and that's what put me on NCL and Carnival too many times. I say never again and then I think it will be fine if I book a suite. Not. I want to save money because I'm usually taking kids but I'm so over it now.

Pretty interesting that here in Mobile, the local media really had and still has this morning, a bone to pick with Carnival and didn't hold back any punches. The mayor did come out and say that they are talking to other cruise lines. Hope it works out for them.

And I'm sure they were hungry again by that hour of debarkation. I have no problem eating steak twice in one day, especially hours after I was expecting to get off. Better yet, a sliced steak hoagie with smothered onions.

Or even a nice turkey sandwich on Italian bread.

nah...a nice thin sliced procuit and prov with oil vinegar and sliced red onions on a crusty wedge! AKA hoagie/hero/grinder/sub depending on what part of the country or da Bronx you are from!

I wish, I've been following it with consideration to buy.

Way too close to the 52-week high for me to even consider. It really hasn't dropped very much.

Now that the Triumph passengers are safely back on terra firma, I've been thinking about questions I have as an addicted cruiser.:) Here are the things I hope to see come out/be addressed by the investigation...

First and foremost, I want to know why there has been a catastrophic power failure on two similar ships built a decade apart. Is there a design flaw, or was it just an unfortunate coincidence?

To what extent, if any, did maintenance practices and schedule play a role in the fire? Are there corporate (Carnival PLC) revenue demands or targets that impact passenger safety by pressuring lines to defer maintenance?

Much has been made of the Triumph's recent propulsion problems, and there are conflicting reports of whether or not those problems had been rectified before this cruise set sail. Is there a correlation between those propulsion problems and the fire? Over the years, I've read many reports of ships (all cruise lines) continuing to sail with propulsion problems. Is this a safe practice?

I read the excellent Cruise Critic article yesterday about new regulations that dictate redundant systems in ships built in 2010 and later. I understand that it is cost prohibitive and in many cases not structurally possible to retrofit older ships. Is there a way to provide enough redundancy on older vessels to keep basic sanitation and life functions operational even in the case of a total power failure?

Those are some of the things I'd like to see addressed and discussed in the aftermath of the Triumph fire and power failure. I'm not a cheerleader or a basher of any cruise line...I've cruised with 4 (soon to be 5:D) different brands, and I view my choice more as buying a product than selecting a spouse! Since three of the lines I've cruised on are part of the Carnival Corporation, I'm anxious for the findings of the investigation. I have no plans to stop cruising:), so I'd like to know how it can be made even safer!

Maybe I missed the word shill. In fact I need to look that up!

I simply mean CCL employee. And probably is being paid while posting.

In fact, so am I! :)

Edit: Mea culpa to Miss Mischele. I did miss that word, and in no way do I / did I ever consider her one!

If you're pd by the post, you must be wealthy

For a 4 day Carnival Cruise, 500$ is more then I think 90% of the rooms on the ship. The one I went on was I think around 300pp for a balcony.

I am in noway a CCL cheerleader but I think they are going above and beyond to make these people whole. Im sure I wouldnt be thrilled if it was me and I might be screaming for more but after a few days these people will look back and realize how lucky they were considering.

That may be true, but I don't think looking at cabin price is a good way to determine what is fair compensation. Cabin price does not necessarily correlate to lost wages or vacation time used up, child care and/or pet sitter fees, long term parking fees - I think it is fair to consider all of those costs. Those extra four days away from home will really add up for many people.

And for anyone who may have lost their job because of this (and YES it really does happen in the real world, some companies have very inflexible attendance policies), of course it is much worse.

Reporting the news is one thing, sensationalizing it is another. It seems like anytime they start to interview someone who says "It was bad, but manageable", the interview is terminated. They act like they want someone to tell them how it was worse than being trapped in a episode of The Walking Dead. I'm sure we'll hear from people who were on the ship, including a few CC members, in the next day or two. Then we'll see if it was Truth in Reporting or just a ratings grab.

Then that's your choice of your media outlet. I found really none of that. It was the anchors that were trying to fill air time and they all know a good tag line will draw people in. Most of my pleasure came from what was being shown, not what was being discussed. And I could have turned it off any time I wanted, and couldn't.

And most of the worst anchors I found on CNN. But to be angry at them? <roll eyes>

Historically, that is the role of the media.

Why some are making them the villain escapes me. They didn't cause this.

Because they are vultures who are just there to sensationalize things to get ratings. While no one is doubting this was a horrible situation, they made it seem a lot worse and you can almost feel their disappointment when people were disembarking and not telling these stories of horror.

Some things to consider...

- Our troops in Afghanistan regularly go on patrols of 7 - 10 days or longer with no hot food or showers.

.

Speaking as someone with brothers who have been deployed, that is true. However, they signed up for that, are trained for that, are getting paid and they don't necessarily like it. And I guarantee both of them would not enjoy being in the middle of the situation on Triumph even iof they'd been in similar conditions before. Is this the worst thing in the world compared to other things going on? No, of course not. But these cruisers, many of whom are children or elderly did not sign up for a week of discomfort and miscommunication. They signed up for a relaxing vacation and they do not have to apologize for feeling miserable and uncomfortable.

CNN was definitely focusing on the worst things people said. They would interview someone for 5 minutes or more, and if they weren't complaining enough they'd ask them something specific about one bad aspect, and then they'd run part of that one comment on the chiron underneath the picture. The worst I saw was when they asked one guy about the red bags. He said that at one point a lady asked him if she could use one of his because she didn't have one handy. So CNN then puts "passengers forced to share red bags" on the chiron strongly implying that more than one person would, ahem, "use" the bag before discarding it, which was completely untrue. They have tens of thousands of those red bags aboard. They're just trash bags with the biohazard symbol printed on them.

well...what you say is so true....but what scares me is that while maybe you and I and I am sure a few others can figure out that CNN et al are all about ratings and will sensationalize anything to keep you watching...

It is really really scary that so many viewers cannot use their brains and figure this out....

a long long time ago I understood that I should not believe everything the media..and a few other sources (like my inlaws) were spewing out...

I use my brain and common sense and really have not trouble making my own decisions and by doing this it is not so difficult to sift through the mud and the muck that is on TV...

however, I really must say those Cuomo brothers do fascinate me....for some reason Andy and Chris just appeal to me....

I have had the pleasure to meet the Gov. once in Albany...

According to one poster on another thread, this would drive CCL in to bankruptcy. You better keep an eye on things before buying. ;)

To those of you who are criticizing the media for making a big deal of this:

The media is all we have as cruising consumers. The 12 page contract puts us at the mercy of the cruise lines- not just for compensation, but for possibly shoddy maintenance and what we all can agree is "cost cutting" above and below decks. Most of us who have been on CC for years and have taken many cruises have read threads about ships being put to sea, loaded with pax, and then missing ports because of propulsion problems, or having rough rides because of stabilizer problems, or having sewage smells that don't let up- and we can all name the ships where these problems have REPEATEDLY occurred.

Nothing we can say or do, no "email to Miami" (or Seattle), no voting with our wallets can create any change because there is always someone else ready to book a cabin.

And the crew: we all speak so highly of the crew, but they have zero protection either. If they complain they are put off at the next port and sent home with the tickets they pre-paid for when they signed their contracts. We can tip them- but are the tips pooled and does the maitre d take his cut? Are the cabin crew tips used to secure that extra egg crate mattress we asked for? We can praise them and smile at them- but can we deny that they now have three or four times the. Amount of work they had even five years ago?

The media has called Carnival to task for this disaster. Come on. Look at it. Put down your pompoms and set aside your congnitive dissonance because you have a cruise booked and LOOK. They towed them across the gulf rather than take them to Progreso. Honestly- Progreso is horrible but it's not THAT bad;). They could have dropped off bottled water and MRE's and whatever. They could have fixed the propulsion problems we all know they had in the month prior.

As long as it's us against them Arison will be tweeting "Go Heat!" As people are trapped in hulls dying and be in his owner's box while cabin crew are pouring water in toilets to clean fecal matter- and smiling at the same time. The media is doing us a big fat favor here.

The media has GREATLY sensationalized it. A couple times I heard that daytime woman on CNN say people were just trying to stay alive. Headlines get people to watch.....and bad news sells, not good news.

As to Progresso, how many times does it need to be said that the Coast Guard even said Mobile was better because of the direction of the currents. The Coast Guard said if they went to Progresso they wouldn't get there any quicker and once there, would take longer to get people back to their homes.

Not everything is a conspiracy.

.

One CNN interviewer (by phone) was a retired CG ship inspector. He said when he heard a call for fire team ALPHA, he got outta bed and went for a walk cause he knew come thing wasn't right. Went to the lido deck, saw smoke black smoke coming outta the stack vent and went and got his family and headed or the muster station before the official call. The look on Erin Burnett s face as he described this was priceless. She didn't know about this before the interview.

.

I think he was also asked something like how long was before you felt you were out of danger and he said 15-20 minutes/

She wasnt expecing it to be that soon

I laughed out loud when I heard that and saw her expression

Oh so well said!

Some of the cheerleaders on these boards are absolutely weird! They seem to love a cruise line more than a better cruising experience!

Strange that people wants facts instead of sensationalized rumors, speculation, and in some cases lies.

This.

Here is where I think CC can help and one of my takeaways from this incident.

Disclaimer: NOT saying there is proof that the Triumph's past mechanical problems caused this incident.

A ship (on any cruise line) that has repeated problems - e.g. plumbing issues, propulsion problems, or is sailing down an engine - should be called out on CC as such to people considering booking that ship. It's relevant information. If I have a choice of ship A or ship B, and ship A is sailing with only 2 out of 3 engines, I'd rather choose ship B. And calling attention to those problems doesn't make you a hater - it's fulfilling one of CC's purposes of making sure that members aren't surprised about the state of the ship.
