Fire on Carnival Triumph. No engines, running on emergency generators.

A ship with no power will list due to wind loading if it happens to face the wind broadside. It becomes a huge sail. It is believed that this is what saved Costa Concordia from sinking in deep water. The difference this time is that the ship does not have a huge gash in its hull.

That does make sense. Never had physics...

New Orleans seems to be closer then mobile according to google maps, and from new orleans to texas sems to be a shorter trip

That may very well be the case , however towing /maneuvering a powerless ship of that size, with two tugboats through the turns of the Mississippi River , would likely not be considered the most prudent choice. Essentially , they can come right up Mobile Bay as a straight shot and dock it fairly easily. Under the best of circumstances it takes several hours to go up river to New Orleans from the gulf . In addition, it is also true that there are ship repair facilities in Mobile that could accomplish the needed repairs.

The Costa disaster occurred a few months before our (August) Liberty sailing. We sail the Breeze this upcoming August. My mom, who I dearly wanted to go with us, had decided to sit this one out. However, will this cause me to cancel our upcoming trip? Nope. Will it cause me to not cruise Carnival in the future? Nope. I truly feel for the crew and passengers on the ship and pray for their safe passage back to Mobile(?). I just can't imagine how awful it must be on board the Triumph.

The report I read said it was going to Alabama. It had drifted North 90 miles, and it would be much less complicated for passengers with no passports. Not to mention can you imagine how long it would take for 4000 people to fly from Progresso. How many flights could possibly go out of Progresso a day.

IF they tow it to Mobile, it will solve MANY problems.

Transportation on the ground.

Transportation in the air.

Health issues.

Local hotel issues if needed.

Getting ship to a real shipyard.

etc.

etc.

etc.

Of course, there does not appear to be a CONFIRMATION of this yet.

Of all the lack of empathy expressed on this thread, I think the accusations of outright fabrication are the toughest to deal with.

If you read upthread you'll see that folks were able to text off the cell towers of the adjacent ships.

Agreed. It is sad that some folks will defend a cruise line no matter how bad the situation is. Accusing people with loved ones on the ship who have texted them of lieing is the absolute worst

I feel for the passengers and the crew. The passengers will get off the ship in a few more days--a little more knowledgeable about the goings on of a cruise ship. I hope they are able to get all the restrooms in working order tonight!

I feel really bad for the crew right now though. None of this is their fault, but I am betting that they are getting earfuls from the passengers on board. If I read correctly, the gratuities are going to be refunded to the passengers --is that correct? This crew members work for basically just their tips. Now, they are not going to get tips from this week's passengers, the next couple of cruises have been canceled, so they may not get any real money for weeks. They are going to be awfully bitter. I hope that Carnival compensates the crew as well, I bet not though!

CARNIVAL TRIUMPH

STATEMENT FROM GERRY CAHILL, PRESIDENT & CEO, CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES

February 12, 2013, 8:30pm ET

The Carnival Triumph, while on a four-day cruise that departed Galveston last Thursday, experienced an engine room fire on Sunday morning and has been without propulsion in the Gulf of Mexico since that time. The ship’s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was successfully extinguished. Fortunately, there were no injuries to guests or crew members.

Earlier this evening, the first of two tugboats arrived and is tied up to the ship with the second expected in the early hours of Tuesday morning. We had originally planned to tow the ship to Progreso, Mexico, the closest port to the ship’s location early Sunday. Since that time, the ship has drifted about 90 miles north due to strong currents. This now puts the ship nearly equidistant to Mobile, Alabama and given the strength of the currents, it is preferable to head north to Mobile, rather than attempt to tow against them. We now expect to arrive in Mobile sometime on Thursday, roughly the same time the ship would have arrived in Progreso given the distance the ship has traveled. From there, we will provide the necessary transportation to get our guests home. Mobile also provides simpler re-entry, particularly for the 900 guests onboard traveling without passports.

We have maintained constant contact with the ship’s officers. All of our guests are safe, and we’re doing everything we can to make them as comfortable as possible. The ship has maintained emergency generator power since the fire occurred and the technical team on board has been successful in gradually restoring auxiliary power to operate some basic hotel functions. Currently, public and cabin toilets are operational in certain sections of the ship, power has been restored to a limited number of elevators, and some power in the Lido dining area is providing for hot coffee and limited hot food service.

All guests on the current Carnival Triumph voyage will receive a full refund for the cruise, along with transportation expenses. In addition, they will receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage, as well as reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage, with the exception of gift shop and casino charges.

We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience, discomfort, and frustration our guests are feeling. We know they expected a fantastic vacation, and clearly that is not what they received. Our shipboard and shoreside teams are working around the clock to care for our guests and get them home safely.

I just read on Carnival`s Facebook page that the ship is headed to Mobile.

CEO Gerry Cahill released a statement that the ship will arrived in Mobile, Alabama sometime on Thursday.

So it is I guess now, confirmed.

Again ... Carnival not thinking about the passengers .. if they are that far north, why not then tow the ship to Galveston, it's original destination?

That way at least everyone gets to disembark at the right port.

The real reason for Mobile is because ... Hmmmm ... isnt that where the shipyard that will be doing the repairs is located? Its where Monarch Of The Seas was towed for repairs some years back.

Mobile is strictly for the convenience of Carnival. And they still have to arrange for all the pax to get transported from there.

This line seems to be making one dumb a** decision after another.

wow! people just can't be satisfied! why not just take the individuals to their front doors. geez! they are bringing them back to the united states, that's great enough!

carnival need to cover tips as a bonus to staff, and i am sure many people will tip regardless (direct) to some staff. its not right, but it is what will happen. and others will leave tips on charges.

Hardly. Galveston would have added a good deal of time to the journey.

That is a sad thought. I'm sure the staff are working harder than ever before and doing jobs they probably didn't think would ever be required. Add to that loss of pay would be devastating for them.

Yep - Sometimes I think some of these posters are actually employed by Carnival as part of their crisis mgmt team to put a positive spin on things

I so agree! Make one little remark about Carnival

that is not positive and some will jump down your throat like you don't know what your talking about! So I seldom post anymore just use cc for information!

Many thanks and prayers to families who have been able to talk to their love ones and given us info that we would not get elsewhere! Praying for their safe and quick return home!
