Ulu knives

I bought 10 of the knives and they did see them on the scanner coming back on the ship. They took the knives and brought them back to our cabin the last night all wrapped and taped together in a bundle.

We did not fly so I can't help you there. BUT coming out of France, I was able to put Eiffel towers in my checked bag but caused a MAJOR security problem with them in the carry on -- causing a police escort to the mailing area while I mailed them home. So I would not bring them back in your carry on!

We went on the Spirit out of Seattle and they did not have any of the coupon books:confused: Luckily my friend gave me her DH's from theri trip out of Vancouver where they did have them. They were great fun to use!

She can't remember WHERE she picked them up and I really want to get a couple for our trip in August. Would anyone who has recently sailed out of Vancouver be able o tell me WHERE they got them - I am hoping to drive up and get a couple when we are up there for a retirement party. Am I going to be able to get to them without checking in as a passanger?

Thanks for the help!

I posted this question a while ago - consensus is this - on the ship - worst case is they will hold it til the last night - best case is they know what ULU knives are and will let you take them aboard.

On the airplane - DO NOT PACK THEM IN CARRYON - they should be fine in checked luggage

The people I know who bought them on the Southbound Carnival Spirit had theirs taken when they got back on board the ship. They were not in their cabins but they had to hunt for them in a special area once they went thru disembarkation. I don't know how this would work if you have a transfer directly to the airport and you don't connect up with your luggage. You would definitely have to put then in your checked in luggage...........

We were on the Star a couple of weeks ago. The scanner saw the one knife that I bought in Ketchikan and they took it and gave me a receipt. We picked up the knife at the information desk on the morning of debarkation. It was no big deal. We packed the knife in our checked luggage so it was no problem. Don't put in in your carry-on.

Since we are talking about ulu knives, where is the better price on those-the ulu factory website or in ports?

Thanks

In my opinion , be very selective on Ulus. It is worth it to purchase the Alaska made ones for their quality, there are way too many foreign made ones for sale in my opinion. The downtown Anchorage store is ideal for a great selection.

Can't help you on the return to the ship but as a TSA screener I can assure you that if you place them in your " Checked " bags there will not be a problem. I am pPlanning on buying these for friends. Doing the 24 July 05 cruise on the Serenade of the seas. Any suggestions on where to buy the

" Alaskan" made "ULU" in Skagway,Ketchikan, or Juneau.

We bought several Ulu knives in Ketchikan. We found several stores who had the ones from the Ulu factory in Alaska. Look at the boxes and don't buy if they say made in China. You will pay more for those made in Alaska. We bought some by themselves and some that came with a bowl to use with them. I think these will make a great gift from Alaska. Every port has them just look for those made in Alaska. We had no problem bringing them back on the ship. We were advised to not pack them in the carry ons.

"Does anybody know if they are allowed to bring them aboard the Carival Spirit?"

Just let them know as you are getting back on the ship that you have some. I think it's better to tell them before you put them through the xray. Then they don't think you are trying to sneak something by them. Once you tell them, they take the knives and write out a form. They give you a receipt and write your name on the knives. I left mine in a bag so they just taped the bag closed and wrote my name on the outside. Then when you get off the ship, they are all there on the floor for you to pick up. They had crew members there helping people to find their knives.

We bought a Ulu with the bowl in Alasks Knife Works in Juneau. The knife is made in Alaska.

Here's their contact information : Alaska Kinife Works (907) 586-1327 - 291 S Franklin St, Juneau, AK

Very close to the Cruise Pier. They have all price ranges and quality. We bought a good quailty blade with a handle made from moose antler. We paid $69 for the knife and bowl. The blade is a good carbon steel, the handle is attached with contact cement, not brads.

We had no problems with security on the ship (HAL), and packed the knife in our checked luggage which cleared security on AmTrak and the airport in Seattle.

On the Radiance of the Seas last week, my sister and I stood and watched the scanner from a position inside the ship, just for fun...we could see the scanner through a window while people's stuff was going by...we saw TONS of Ulu knives and not ONCE did the scanner personnel say anything or take the knives from anyone. People just walked aboard ship with them. Kind of scary...
