Question for NON smokers regards Radiance of the Seas

Hi There,

I tried a few days back to get an answer to this question I have without success, so I'll try again. :)

A question for NON smokers specific to Radiance of the Seas.

Could any non smokers who are sensitive to cigarette smoke & who have sailed on Radiance out of a US port please clarify for me what NON smoking indoor areas of the ship are affected by smoke drift from designated smoking areas?

Cruises out of Australia where I live are conducted under Australian smoking laws so Royal prohibits smoking indoors in any part of the ship which is what I'm used to on Radiance.

But we have booked 3 cruises out of the US (Alaska, Hawaii & Trans Pacific) & I found out afterwards that the smoking rules onboard are different than what I'm used to over here & that Royal has designated smoking areas indoors on cruises sailing from US ports.

However smoke does not stay within designated boundaries so I'm aware that smoke drift may affect other areas of the ship.

I'm just trying to find out if I can avoid the smoky parts or not as I have unpleasant sinus related reactions to smoke & some perfumes that sometimes results in vertigo due to blockages in the synuses.:(

I have been told that the only indoor smoking areas are:

Part of the casino (except on formal nights?)

Part of the English Pub

The back of the Colony Club (not sure if the whole back or one side?)

If anyone can be more specific that would be helpful, I know the ship well so will understand what areas you are describing.

Also, will smokers be more likley to smoke indoors on Alaskan cruises due to the cooler weather than on an Hawaiin cruise, anyone noticed a difference?

IMPORTANT

Please no debates regards the pros & cons of smoking just honest answers based on your experiences.

This is not an anti smoking thread, just someone trying to get answers to better manage their allergic reactions.

Thanks.:)

And if you have a balcony and you have smokers next door be ready to smell the smoke if you and they are out on the balcony at the same time. I've been forced indoors because of 2 or 3 out on their balcony while we were pulling into port. I couldn't enjoy it because it was too overwhelming for me.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I have experienced smoke on the balcony at times on my other Royal cruises so understand there could be times this is a problem for me & I just go back inside quickly, but luckily my balcony cabins for these upcoming cruises are quite forward so this helps with less smoke drift when the ship is moving.

I have never had an issue with smokers on the port side of the ship so hopefully the smokers will keep to the starboard smoking side & if not I would request a staff member advise the smoker of the rules.

I respect the smokers right under current Royal smoking rules to smoke where they are permitted, so would expect the same courtesy in return.

Has anyone found the Colony Club to be smokey & does anyone know if the whole back section is for smoking or one side of the bar area?

Also, how about the English Pub, I recall this is a fairly small venue so any smoking in there would I expect make the whole area somewhat smokey at times or is that not the case?

I don't use the Casino other than to pass through to get from the theatre to the centrum/schooner bar area, so hopefully I can just hold my breath on the way through.:)

Unfortunately it's not excessive exposure to smoke but the intial exposure that affects me, so avoiding exposure is the best approach for me.

Would you object to a person using an electronic cigarette in non smoking areas that produces no smoke and no smell or drift and no dangerous side stream/second hand smoke?

Den

No of course not, no problem with that.

To be clear I'm not objecting to people smoking in smoking areas either, as it's their right to do so under the current Royal smoking rules on US based cruises.:)

What do you mean by US based cruises? RCI cruises from Australia are still the same I thought? RCI cruises?

Do RCI have to change the rules while in OZ and under what authority? I know about the strict gambling laws with 12 mile limit and Australian laws about smoking once in Australian ports but i cant see Australia enforcing its smoking policy's on non Australian ships?

RCI ships sailing from Australian waters are under RCI rules which allow smoking in some inside areas Australian based cruise ships adhere to a different rule of zero smoking in any inside areas including balconies.

It is of course only a rule and not a law of any sort so you are saying RCI ships while cruiseing Australia prohibit smoking in inside areas,on Balconies and 5 meters from any bar which are Australian cruise ship rules for P&O/Princess Australia?

I wasnt aware of this:confused:

Hi Den,

OK this is what happens, when sailing out of Australia, Royal prohibits smoking anywhere indoors to be more in sync with Australian smoking regulations. Wether it's by some legal requirement or out of respect for our local legislation & expectations I don't know.

They allow smoking on balconies & on the outdoor areas on the starboard side of the ship. I recall also at one or maybe both of the bars near the pool. No smoking inside - nada, zero, zip.

In their Smoking Policy in the back of their brochures they say this about compliance in reference to their listed smoking policy:

"Please note that the above policy is subject to revision in order to comply with current applicable health legislation, where countries have local smoking regulations. This may mean that smoking is prohibited except in designated outdoor areas or when arriving/departing certain ports"

Smoking regulation in Australia is stricter than US regulations, with our state of NSW being one of the strictest in Australia, with recently introduced upgrades to the legislation that prohibits smoking in public places where people can't easily avoid smoke, such as bus stops, train stations, playgrounds & other areas were people have to queue or wait for services.

I would assume though that Royal would be following our National average smoking regulations rather than specific state ones, but I'm not positive on that.

:)
