lakeguy Posted September 20, 2013 #103 Share Posted September 20, 2013 Always fun to have people familiar with a particular ship chime in and educate those of of who have not sailed on her yet. My family and I are going to be aboard the Sun in 09/2014 so we have lots of time. I am assembling a tip letter for all of the people sailing and am looking for those tips and "secrets" exclusive to the Sun. Have done this with other ships and it is always fun - and most of the time very valuable information to have! Any tips anyone? ;) janniebabe, we will be on the sun in Feb, are you going to put togeather a tip letter and if so how can I get a copy? PROCRUISE Posted September 20, 2013 #104 Share Posted September 20, 2013 Thanks for all the tips. We'll be on The Sun 1/1/14 just for pure R & R. Been to all the ports of call more than once and just want to sit on our balcony and relax. I'm sure the ship, and what she offers, will be just fine. :) David
mirthu Posted September 21, 2013 #105 Share Posted September 21, 2013 The Great Outdoors is an excellent spot for breakfast, and the buffet area just inside is always less crowded than the reg. buffet area. You don't need a Spa Pass to use the Sauna. Best Chicken Wings anywhere in the Sports Bar ( same as Blue Lagoon ). That's all that comes to mind right now, I'm sure others have other secrets. Enjoy the Sun, we sure did. cheers...the Ump...:D Thank you for the tips. Is a charge for the food on the Sport Bar?
newmexicoNita Posted September 21, 2013 #106 Share Posted September 21, 2013 Sun in Astoria, Oregon today, coming back from the Alaska season, on her way to Miami! Passengers were welcomed with beautiful weather- changing drastically soon. Ship looked good and we tried to spot our cabin on her in Feb!! Glad they were greeted with great weather. We sailed her the other direction in April, about 3 years ago: Astoria wasn't as kind to us. I will say, we loved the port though.

newmexicoNita Posted September 21, 2013 #108 Share Posted September 21, 2013 (edited) Yes, those are the only cruises I have taken. Aside from some day cruises like Discovery out of Ft Lauderdale. Work and a lot of independent travel to Australia, San Francisco, Grand Canyon, Boston, as well as visiting family vacations, have been my mainstay over this past decade plus. It is too bad to hear that this is what has become of cruise ship dining. Most likely, I won't be taking many other cruises. This is one reason, along with the fact that I like to spend a lot of time really getting to see a place when I travel. Even Australia I had 3 days in Sydney, much more time than on a typical cruise port. SF we spent 6 days and Boston we spent 5 days. However, for seeing the ice, glaciers, etc. in Alaska, I felt a cruise was better suited for this kind of sightseeing. Don't take the food thing too seriously. Yes, it certainly isn't what is was, 10 or more years ago, but the specialty dining rooms make up for it and the food is certainly fine in the MDRs.It is good, someone has forewarned you though. We are always satisfied with the MDR food, we just can't say, like in the 90s: wow, I can't believe how good that was. We handle this, by enjoying the specialty dining rooms a few nights. We just figure an extra $100 into the budget for specialty dining. As for a diner type, yes, Blue Lagoon is about what you are talking about but they don't have one on the Sun. What they do have, or did, last time we sailed her was the Sports bar. Give that a try, you might find something close to what you are thinking about. jdvmd Posted September 21, 2013 #109 Share Posted September 21, 2013 Thank you for the tips. Is a charge for the food on the Sport Bar? The Sports Bar is open from 5:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., not 24 hours like Blue Lagoon. There is no charge.

nyjustus2 Posted October 27, 2013 #114 Share Posted October 27, 2013 My best tips... 1. Bring a power strip. There is only 1 outlet in the balcony room. 2. Bring a blow dryer...the one on the Sun balcony room is awful if you style your hair. 3. Casino is extremely smokey...avoid if you are asthmatic 4. As crazy as this will sound, if you like Maple Syrup, bring your own bottle. The ship had a maple syrup that had a very odd taste to it. It ruined pancakes and waffles. We asked the waiter and he said they changed brands....it was awful tasting. 5. Bring white clothes for the White Hot Party.....it's so fun! Most of all, relax and enjoy! Arzeena Posted October 27, 2013 #118 Share Posted October 27, 2013 (edited) I found the food (variety and taste) on the Sun much better than on other NCL ships.....except in the buffet. The Great Outdoors is a wonderful place! It looked bigger than the one on the Jewel. Loved the observation lounge in front of the ship. Great place to hang out or read. Went to two specialty restaurants, Il Adagio and Moderno. Both were very good. GO HUNGRY if you are going to Moderno....it's a LOT of food :) Casino staff is really nice. Dining room service was s....l....o....w most of the times. Entertainment was nice. Didn't enjoy the boring Kenny Byrd....really! who did he sleep with to get a show!!! but then I don't enjoy ventriloquist acts so it's just my opinion :) The hyptonist was good. Rebecca and Donovan were excellent .......have seen them before and enjoyed them everytime. Production shows were good. Comedian was nice. Missed El Gaucho. Richard Matic is a good cruise director and his staff is great! Went on a galley, backstage and laundry behind the scenes tour and I must report that the galley is really clean! Arzeena Posted November 12, 2013 #123 Share Posted November 12, 2013 The Great Outdoors is the best on the Sun. Loved the Observation Lounge. Fantastic concert pianist Pegannini on board our sailing......not to be missed.
topguy Posted November 20, 2013 #124 Share Posted November 20, 2013 It will be my first trip on the Sun April 7, 2014. I loved the Sky. As for food and service, I find ship food and service the same as any other land restaurant. Sometimes it is not up to par, but at other times it is good. Every cook and server has a bad day now and then.
