How safe is it

I've left money out before not much less than $40 from the casino and had forgotten to put it my wallet in the safe. Went to dinner and it was still laying on the desk with my phone. :o

We've done the same on a number of cruises. I've also left my wallet lying on the vanity many times. I carry a number of prescriptions too, some narcotic, and those are always left in a shaving kit bag on the vanity. My wedding ring set will often sit on the edge of the mirror to the vanity. Nothing's ever been disturbed.

To go one further, on one cruise we came back to our cabin in the evening and found our bed turned down, with the Fun Times on the corner. On the Fun Times was a $20 bill and a note. Our room steward had found it under the bed, thought it was ours and left it where we could find it. But it wasn't ours. We turned it into guest services, making sure we told them about the honesty of their crew member.

Those pesky towel animals  have a tendency to claim all items of value !!!

cameras, necklaces, glasses etc.

But they cant run very fast so they are easy to catch :D

We left a top of the line Macbook Air in the room on our cruise. We were worried to...

What we did is throw all of our gadgets in a empty suitcase, locked the suitcase, and put it under the bed. A friend of ours also locks the suitcase to the bed.

I also have had no problem w my laptop in a drawer but fwiw my camera dslr and iPad as well as nexus 7 fit ok in the safe.

A friend's camera though was stolen during a cabin crawl so the crew isn't the only ones to be concerned about ... especially when you bring strangers into your room (same as if you throw a party at your home).

That all be being said, my wife's wedding rings were stolen from inside our safe by our steward (I left it unlocked when we went to breakfast). That was on Royal though and ultimately the rings were recovered (there isn't much space for the crew to hide).

My general advice is be smart and don't leave stuff out and easy to nick, but don't freak out either :) enjoy your cruise!

Just my opinion...We were just on the Carnival Inspiration and left our Canon camera on the counter in our room sometimes and then just in a drawer sometimes and had absolutely no problems. I just don't think room stewards are going to risk their job over a camera, kindle, etc...

I have never had a problem either - but here is my thought (I know, only worth a few cents LOL) - for your own peace of mind, meet the cabin steward, meet the person assisting him - if you get a good vibe, leave things out, if not - hide them in a drawer with your undies if the valuables don't fit - even better - dirty laundry bag!

What i mean is, whatever feels comfortable, works... no matter if it is a ship or a hotel. Personally, I trust the crew on a ship better than those in a hotel.

So the ship has 4000 people on it. The city I live in has 4000 people. Occasionally, someone shoplifts at the mini market, or grocery store. Actually, the grocery store, more often. So somone on that ship, is going to have sticky fingers. What are the odds it will hit you. Slim. Ok, but things will go missing. So for everyone that never had a problem, that's great and normal. If the first 10 posters chimed in and said they lost a camara on board, I would have scratched my head. But someone, somplace today, sailing on a ship, will have an item dissappear with sticky fingers.

Now for the $20.00 bill. If I was to somehow loose a $20.00 bill, I honestly would not ever think to go to the desk, and ask if anyone found it. Mostly, I doubt I would know I lost it, and two, what are the odds of someone returning it? I could see a wallet, with credit cards etc in it, but a single $20 bill? I would have kept it if the staff placed it on my bed. Honestly, I would have believed it was mine and really would have no way of knowing it wasn't?

We do the same.

It's not the steward that I don't trust. How many times have you walked by an unoccupied cabin with the door open during cleaning? Steward may be in the cabin next door. Sooo easy for someone to duck in and snatch valuables.

Same here. We always lock up the iPads and tuck away the camera. I've never not trusted a cabin attendant but they do prop the doors open when they are cleaning the rooms.

I am sure that is what they meant and they made a typo. I am king of the typos. Just thought I'd have a little fun. :-)

Bill

Just joking with you. I, too make many typos which is why I picked up on it. :D

left my laptop on the boat when we disembarked. Didn't notice until about 20 minutes later. Called Carnival we turned around and retrieved my Laptop. They could have said very easily that they could not find it! I was very impressed!

On our cruise last year our daughter's ipod went missing. We never let her take it out of the cabin and usually locked it in the safe before we left. One time we forgot and left it on the counter. When we got back we looked everywhere for it and could not find it. Left a note for the room steward and filed a report with guest services but it was never found. They did ask if we wanted to check the steward's cabin but we declined. Maybe he took it but it just as likely could have been someone walking by when the room was left open for cleaning. I was hoping if the steward did take it, that he would find it when cleaning the next time but nope. So it can happen but like I said it could have been a passenger too. Therefore I would advise leaving all valuables out of sight.

Sometimes the I-pad fits in the safe, sometimes it does not. I lock everything I can in the safe.

Since there is a safe in the room, it is no inconvenience to lock things up - just in case. I wouldn't freak about it, but there is no downside to putting it in the safe.

When my I-pad didn't fit in the safe, I put it in my dirty clothes suitcase when I left the room. Again - because there was no downside to doing it. No, I didn't lock the suitcase, but "out of sight, out of mind."

Do you know how many people have keys to the cabins? Just like any other segment of the world - there are a small percentage of dishonest people on cruise ships.

Did you see the photo of the cabin steward taking photos with his stolen I-Phone? The dummy had his name tag on so they caught him.

It happens. Not often. But it happens. Protect yourself if you can - don't worry about it if you can't.

We lock up our phones, wallets and jewelry in the safe. Mostly so we know where they are when we need them. We put the laptop in a drawer. I usually have my camera with me. I left my expensive sunglasses out on the counter and when I came back my towel animal was wearing them. So cute!

We were 100% positive that it wasn't our money. Knowing that, we weren't going to keep it. I didn't really expect that guest services would find the proper owner, but that it would maybe go to the crew member who found it. Looking back now, the only thing I would have done different is just give the money to the room steward.

I've been told a few times in life that I'm TOO honest. I just tell them I don't think that's a negative thing. ;)

My camera would fit in the safe if I remove the lens.

When we are on the ship I would just put it in closet under some clothes. If there was a port that I did not want to take it to I would lock it in the safe.

Never had any problems but still won't leave it sitting in the open in the cabin.
