How do you keep in touch with family on ship?

So, we are cruising hopefully in Nov with three cabins and how do you keep in touch or meet up during day, etc.... Do you keep cell phones on you or something else? I know when in rooms we can call rooms. I am asking because my MIL will have my 3 year old in her room and we want to touch base when we are all up- and what if they are at breakfast or something. On a big ship, I assume it'll be hard to just go and find them. Or if we all want to meet at a pool, how do let each other know where we are at, etc? Just call rooms?

Phones are ridiculously expensive aboard the ship and abroad... even if they work (ship's cell satellite feed costs $$$$$$)

We went on a cruise with 2 other families last year. Seven adults, 6 kids. We called rooms, left voicemails, had meeting areas at agreed times, there was a section of the pool deck where we usually liked to hang out and would inevitably find each other.

'Tomorrow morning we'll try to hit breakfast at 8:00am and snag chairs at that spot by the pool, so if you don't see us at the buffet... we'll see you at the pool'
'Me and Bob are going to do the whiskey tasting, you said you'll be at bingo or the casino?'

In the evening, we had an agreed time and place to find each other for dinner and/or shows.

'We're gonna take a nap, and we'll meet you at the Centrum at 6, for dinner. We have that show to go to at 8'

I have thought about magnetic dry erase boards, which I have seen stuck to some doors, but never had the gumption to attempt it... although it would be helpful... just like college. It's hard to think how we all got around when the only cell phones around were installed into cars or the Zach Morris phone.

Fortunately, when we cruise, we're all on the same ship... so it's not like we're going anywhere really far away from each other.

I was on a family reunion cruise with 35 other people and we found it really wasn't that hard to stay in touch. We left messages for each other in their rooms and had pre-arranged meeting times also. Even though it's a big ship, it wasn't all that difficult to just run into each other either. Most people are either in their room or at the pool or on their way from their room to the pool. If it's lunch time they might be in the dining room. It never took us very long to find anyone we were looking for.

If you have a young child in the kids club they give you a phone to use onboard (carnival anyways) so we used this to keep in touch. One of us always had it on us & the other knew the number so could call from the room or from the public phones in the hallways.
