Golf clubs "confiscated" - Anyone else had this happen or heard of this?

Recommended Posts

Someone saw their game, and their SLICE was so bad, security was warned?

Seriously, all the commentary, except the OP's, is conjucture....The calling RCI a liar is conjecture....but that is that poster's position and they are sticking to it....you know the evil corporation syndrome at work.

I have never had our clubs taken away, but the way ship security handle dit seems to have been very polite.

Add my own conjecture...maybe someone told security there was a concern about someone else using a club as a weapon....my conjecture makes as much sense as anyone else's and I am sticking to my story!

If golf clubs are so dangerous to have on board, why is there a mini-golf course on most ships, complete with clubs?
Same reason they don't let you bring knives on board, but have them available in the dining venues.

I find it hysterical. I wonder if they do the same thing to the Captains and Staff Captains that golf? :D It's about 50/50 - half of them play golf and half play tennis, and yes - they take their clubs on board, and leave in port to go play a round.

Sounds like there was some kind of problem that either happened on board, or they were worried about... either that or there's a newly promoted Security Officer trying to prove to everyone how "useful" he is...

Glad I read all that. We are thinking about taking ours next year. It wouldn't bother me if we couldn't keep them in our room. A bit inconsistency from ship to ship though. Wonder what Freedom will be like

We have taken golf clubs aboard at least ten times and have always kept them in our cabin. The last time we had golf clubs, we were asked to carry them on board at Cape Liberty - which we did (Brilliance repositioning Nov 2012). This was odd, but we did so.

I guess security varies by ship. As long as we have use of the clubs, we don't care where they are stored.

If your KID omitted the TRUTH to you what would you call it?

While their punishment might be the same, I would ask them why they didn't tell me, I would not call them a liar.

This doesn't answer the issue, but a few years ago we had the misfortune of sailing during Spring Break. At the end of the week, the ship was trashed,

and our week was not good. There was a large group of college aged students

who came aboard with an ice chest full of beer and golf clubs. They actually beat out stateroom windows with the golf clubs, and trashed everything they came in contact with.

Again, I'm not saying this was the reason for the poster's issues---just

relating an experience.

I hope you enjoyed the other aspects of your cruise, and do not allow this issue to spoil your memories of it. Also FYI I note that Ski's are also not listed, but might fall into the section of Skateboards and Surfboards just in case you choose to live up to your Screen Name on any future cruise. :)

Funny you mention surfboards... We were on Oasis in March and there was a couple from New York that brought their own boards for the flow rider along with wet suits. They were great riders and did not have security escort them back and forth with their boards from security storage to the flow rider. On a side note they were also nice people to chat with while in line.

Must be different policy enforcement on different ships.

  • 4 months later...

We are on the November TA from Southampton, with 2 weeks prior in Scotland playing golf. I really would love a defintive answer on what to expect. I wanted to drop my clubs and bags with the porters and then return our rental car to the airport with a taxi back to the ship. I would be really dissapointed if I was counting on checking the clubs in with the porters and then be refused as it would really screw up and change my plans.

So if anyone else has any information since May regarding how clubs are handled I would really appreciate the input.

Hopefully someone that has recently boarded in Southampton can give you a definitive answer. Just like OP in thread about porters not accepting golf bags, our bags were not accepted in FlLL when boarding OA. We had to carry them on. However, we did take them off the ship at 2 ports and were able to bring them back onboard and take them to our room with no troubles on OA. We have sailed many times with RC and had not experienced either of these issues until the last few months. Mr Ski has spoken with corporate and they say that the porters were never supposed to accept golf clubs but have been doing so as no one enforced the policy. The issue seems to be that there is a new porter company in FLL and they are enforcing it. I do not know anything about Southampton though so hopefully someone else can give you much better info! Please come bak here and let us know how it all works out for you.

We were on Oasis in July. My son brought his clubs for the ship's golf tour in Jamaica. The porter in FLL wouldn't take them, but said that it was because of the liability issue - evidently people had accused the porters of damaging their clubs, and they were no longer accepting them as a matter of policy. However, my son was allowed to roll the golf bag on to the ship after putting it through the metal detector. After he played, he was allowed to board the ship in Falmouth with the clubs, & no questions asked.

The only issue I've had with "sports equipment" is with scuba gear. My daughter & I went diving in Cozumel last year, also when we were on Oasis. We have dive knives attached to our BC's in sheaths. We honestly didn't think anything of it. They were allowed on the ship in FLL. However, when we were rebounding in Cozumel, the Mexican authorities saw them on the Xray in our bags. They were confiscated, & we had to pick them up at security after getting off the ship in FLL.

:D:D always amazed at the amount of people that will defend cruise lines in just about every instance...until something happens to them...I thought OP had an interesting issue :cool:

I totally agree.

Many people have a "blind loyalty" to the cruiseline for no real reason.

A few people think of going on another cruiseline as "cheating" or "being unfaithful"...

They were STILL LIED to.
Where is the lie? OP said he "thought" it was a favor - security never said that. To me, Security was just being polite in their wording and not use the word "confiscated."

After going through security onboard upon our return that afternoon (and sending clubs through the x-ray machine as typical) we were pulled aside and told they would store our clubs in the security office and to let them know when we needed them the next morning. They asked for an inventory of the items and gave us a receipt. We thought they were being courteous and doing us a "favor" by storing our clubs in the security office. We thought this was great would give us more room in the cabin. The next morning we went down to the gangway and requested the clubs. They brought them out to us and Mr. Ski returned the "receipt" to them. Off we went for another day golfing.

On our return that afternoon...they once again pulled us aside after we had gone through security (and the clubs had gone through the x-ray). They said they would once again store them for us. Mr. Ski explained that we would not be golfing again the rest of the trip so that we wouldn't need them again. They said "no problem" and that they would keep them until the last day.

Hey folks.... This is an old thread. No need to get ugly with each other. It was only started many months ago to determine if it was a new policy, if it had happened to anyone else, and if it was fleet wide. We have been on 2 cruises since on 2 different ships and it has not happened again. One of the ships even had the same security officer that took them from us originally on another ship. So apparently this was an isolated incident. Don't know what we did to prompt it...but apparently it isn't a new policy, isn't fleet wide and apparently hasn't happened to anyone else. So research is over and time for everyone to play nice and share info...not criticize each other or call names.

I had read through the whole post and aside from the ugly and defensive, I only brought it back up as my golf trip is nearing and I really wanted to get some updated information on it since, how the golf clubs are accpeted is going to determine on what I do with the rental car in Southampton.

No need to get defensive or beligerent, LOL

I think my best course of action is to email RCCL and ask, hopefully get a written response, although that won't help much at the port if the actual people on the ground are not up to speed or don't adhere to the RCCL policy. I will just expect a hassle and not be upset about it one way or the other.

It was me!!!! I told security that this tall gentleman in golfing attire nudged me off my spot at the craps table and if I slipped him a $20 would they confiscate his clubs!!!!!:p:D;):)

What I have always had a problem with concerning these "items" with both ships and planes is that there are any number of items on the ship and plane, such as metal knives from the MDR and WJ that you can take to your room without any trouble at all; or pens, pencils etc in your carryon (heck the lady next to me on Delta a couple days ago was knitting, those knitting needles are deadly!). Any of these things could be used to hurt others or commit a crime with, but they take your golf clubs, hello, you could use an umbrella to brain someone with but they don't take those?????

Sometimes it seems the powers that be don't use their noggins much!

Ski, I just wonder if this is a policy on Grandeur only as you've never had a problem on other ships you've been on.

This must be ship specific. There was a post not too long ago about someone boarding (Freedom, I believe), and they were shocked that golf clubs were no longer accepted as checked luggage and they had to carry them onboard.

It also sounds like this is up to whatever Security personnel are working at the time, as the OP was able to leave and return to the ship and carry the clubs without issue. It wasn't until after another stop that sercurity "confiscated" them.

I just want to know what the policy is? I can adapt my plans to work with either checking them in with the curbside porters or lugging them on myself. I just would really like to know as that will determine whether I drop off luggage and clubs prior to returning car or drop clubs and luggage at the curb with wife while I go return car. My preference would be to have the porters take them. i don't think I would enjoy boarding the ship lugging my clubs, either in the travel case or solely the bag.

I would be aggravated if I am told one thing and then something different happens. It doesn't matter if RCCL "confiscates" them or not, as I am not playing golf after boarding. I would actually love for them to store them for me, and for that matter I hope the porters will take them with the rest of my luggage.

No....lets review:D

You carried them on, no problem

You got to use them during the cruise

You got them back at the end of the cruise

Sounds as though RCI is taking care of business, looking out for the safety of all pax. Maybe someone got caught sneaking aboard something in their golf bag recently

Not quite sure how you could "sneak" a golf bag on. They are kind of large. Not like you can hide it:rolleyes:
