I have seen some postings on here with their avatar as a palm tree and other things so how come they don't show up as an option when I go into edit avatar ?

You can upload a pix of pretty much anything you want.

You can upload a small picture from your computer if you don't want to chose one from "edit avatar."

The first couple of avitars, I had no problems changing my avitar. Then I got a new computer and new camera and had problems. My newest avitar would not take.

So I had to contact a host and that person turned over my problem to a techie here. She was able to get my new avitar in. She sent me an e-mail - seems that my new camera takes better pictures than my old one did and as a result the system here would not take such clear resolutions.

Strange as I am able to post pictures in posts without a problem.

You can even make it a photo of yourself and your husband, and then people from your roll call recognize you on board and ashore!
