Ladies, Do you take a purse?

Recommended Posts

Purses are man's way of keeping us down.
Yowza. Not even touching that one.

In answer to the OP, yep. I do. I bring multiples. First is my large white leather purse - perfect as a carry-on on the plane, then as a carry-on for the ship. It holds my documents, wine, kindle, phone, jewelry, noise-cancelling headphones etc. After boarding, it goes into the closet until it's time to get off the ship and fly home. Then there's my tan and black wristlets for during the day (they also work as wallets in my larger purses) - they hold S&S card, lipstick, and cash (for extra tips). Followed by my bright pink snakeskin clutch for evening - goes with every dress I pack and holds the standard day stuff as well as comb, powder and camera. And last but not least, a large canvas tote for beach days for my sunscreen, towel etc.

What can I say, I love purses. After 20+ years in the military so far, I get a little tired of carrying everything in my pockets all the time and wearing boring colors. I like to jazz it up a bit when I cruise and wear my dresses and heels and carry cute purses. :) Isn't it great that we all have the choice to carry whatever we want - or not?

I take a purse for embarkation and debarkation purposes as I carry the boarding passes, passports, money and my jewelry in it. Once onboard I unload my purse and put the money, passports, jewelry and my wallet into the safe. The purse goes into a suitcase under the bed for the duration of the cruise. Onboard I wear my Sail and Sign card around my neck (with a credit card if required to operate the safe) and a few bucks for the casino. In port I use a wallet on a string that I wear cross-body. It holds the credit cards, cash, passports and meds for DH. The morning of debarkation I load all the junk back into the purse along with any last items I find and get off the ship.

Yup. For sea days I need my iPad, Nook (purchased prior to purchasing iPad), iPod, headphones and DSLR camera. Those items alone require a tote bag of some sort. Then I add some casino cash, a hairbrush, lipgloss, sunscreen, gum and other girly necessities.

Port days the same but add a small wallet, magazines instead of the iPad/Nook and instead of my DSLR a waterproof point and shoot.

I also have several clutches and small bags I use for dinner. I go nowhere without some type of bag. My outfit feels incomplete.

I take a small "cross body" bag, neutral in color, so it pretty much disappears when I wear it, and it holds the small essentials mentioned by others (credit card, ship card, phone, $$$, tissues, etc.) plus my sunglasses, camera, and a water bottle.

I often use it on board ship, though mostly in port.

I hate to have to hold my hand out to hubby whenever I want to buy anything, so this gives me independence (even if we are walking hand in hand through the market : )

The bag has an outer flap over a zipper, and inside is another zipper pocket in which I place my valuables, and I position the bag so it hangs across my chest and in front of my body, so I can keep an eye on it.

We are not big shoppers, so I don't feel the need to carry a large tote or backpack in port. If I am going on a beach excursion, I take a beach bag with inside zippers to hold valuables.

Now, I have only cruised in the Caribbean, not in the more pickpocket-prone parts of the world, so I might choose something different for those ports.

I have a complete Coach set that I put together just for travel. A large purse for travel to and from the ship, a small coordinating wallet for money and cards, a lanyard for the S&S card, a wristlet for evenings on the ship, and a large beach tote for port days. They all go together so I can mix and use as needed.

Not taking a purse is what I LOVE about cruising. (we do carry one backpack but that is just to get on ship or to go on excursion)

Just get a lanyard for your S&S card, punch a hole in corner and you are good to go!

Purses are man's way of keeping us down. We don't really need all that crap in a purse. I don't even carry one on dry land any more. Have a animal skin wallet case that holds my phone and id/credit cards. Fits in my back pocket!

(quick in and out of vehicle for safety too)

Free yourselves! Try it!

(background: my mother is a packrat and her purse no matter what size, is stuffed. Even her smallest is at least 5 lbs)

I can't do that. I have severe allergies and have to carry an epi pen, and other meds, everywhere I go. I guess it is a good thing that I love my purses!

Can't do what? I'm confused. I carry a purse, too.:)

Edited to say: I'm confused. No, wait, maybe I'm not. LOL :P I see you quoted me first accidentally, but meant to quote another PP. Got it. ;)

I do not carry a purse. I usually always have my camera bag, so put my S & S card in there. I have a beach bag I take when in port and put my camera bag in a large ziplock bag and go go go :)

Exactly what I do. I always have my camera/bag with me. It has compartments for any ID I need. I don't carry around lip gloss or gum etc... so it is just the right size. Beach day, the beach bag is always with me.

I carry a wristlet around the ship. It fits everything I need (cell, lip gloss, sign & sail and camera). When I am in port, I carry a bag that actually serves as my pocketbook at home. One of those huge leather bags that hold everything (high heels, reading material for the subway, etc) Except on vacation I carry beach towels, sunscreen, etc).

I think I am going to use a big beach bag this year in ports so that I am not worried about ruining my bags at beaches or on excursions.

I replied to this post earlier, but this evening after work I was browsing Elder Beerman when I came across a fun, bright tote/wristlet combo on sale for only $30! And based on most of the responses on this thread, I felt like I had to share it with you because it seems to be perfect for most of us! :)

The tote is plastic so if water splashes on it it's no biggie. It's the perfect size for sunscreen, a book or two, and other pool-side essentials. I loved the wristlet too, because it's detachable so you can wear it by itself plus it's the perfect size to fit your phone and camera in along with your S&S card. They also have a few other similar styles on their website... I just wanted to share because I figured (some of) you ladies would really like it!

...can't leave home without it sorry :o.

With that said, once I get on the ship I carry a wristlet around with me throughout the whole cruise and when I go off the ship I always have my beach bag to carry bigger items with me. So my actual purse is only used the first day of the cruise before I get to my room and the last day, getting off the ship.

So convenient this way. But there is no way I can walk around with just nothing. I need to have some type of small purse or wristlet to walk around the ship with. :D

I carrey one big purse a long time all the time less filled than when I travel....have a cloth black coach that was my 50th gift (very special I buy one every year in lotto tickets and said no can not spend like that until lucky 50 received one..next one from a second hand source I think in leather).. a few years ago from dear mom. It holds alot and try to keep it down every day but takes what i need day to day and for outings all day with a water bottle....It is my purse carrey on and that and an old black American Tourister Carrey on from early 90's Costco 5bags in one purshase LOL...I love the size and both fit under a seat..or one of 2 goes above if room and easy on my arms. They both fit on my roller case so well.

Then the bag can be my beach bag too if I need or I bring one...this bag has never been a beach bag but getting worn so may be on next cruise.

Forever I have carried a black Whiting and Davis mesh bag for dress...mine is the cosmetic bag but simple for lipstick, a foldable mini brush, clippers, kleenex and card and a little cash,...this was a favorite of many 50 somethings grandmothers and mothers ..they last and repair....I love this little tiny bag....

Mine is kind of like this..the new card holder is cool..it is over 25 years old and perfect...

I'm in the small crossover purse club. It goes in the safe and stays there. I wear a lanyard for my S&S.

Small beach bag for lido days got to have sunscreen, magazines and puzzle books..nothing I would get upset about if stolen. Electronics and phone stay in the cabin.

Ports big beach bag and dh has big pockets that zip up!

Now a question about those wristlets....don't you wind up laying them down? I think I would.

may be telling my age but I miss the days that fanny packs were cool! So handy for everthing. :D:eek::D

Im in my early 30s and I dont care if fanny packs are cool or not. They are so convenient, I sport one anyway  :D

But generally on the ship I just use a lanyard for my s&s card.

I bring a small purse (cross body) or wristlet for at night to hold lip gloss, sign n sail card, etc. For port days and during the day on sea days, I carry a backpack . My normal every day bags don't make the trip.

No purse once I am on the ship. I use a lanyard to carry my S&S, list of the activities that is in the Capers and the small deck card when on ship. I do have a small backpack for going on shore in places we will be doing shopping and a beach bag for other islands and going up on deck.

Ok, a lot of the time on the ship, I just carry my lanyard with my S&S.

Last year I decided to sew myself a crossbody bag, it is large enough to have a pocket inside for my ipad (give you an example of size). I like to take pictures and I have a large camera and a small camera. While on the ship, if I am wanting to take pictures with my large camera, I throw it in this purse and off I go, Since it is just fabric, it is really lightweight. If I just want to take my small camera, I throw it in a Vera Bradley wristlet that I use as a wallet inside my purse. It will fit a few small things as well as the smaller camera.

On Shore, I take my homemade purse since it is crossbody and put my S&S and ID inside the wristlet and put it in the purse. My purse can also hold extra items that I might purchase to take home. If we need towels and stuff then DH throws those in a backpack, but nothing important goes in there. I keep my purse in front of me and it is hip level so I would notice someone getting into it and with my camera in ports, heavy enough that I would totally notice it gone. The wristlet goes in the pouch for the ipad so it would never just fall out as it is velcroed shut.

Oh my!

Well, the question was do I take a purse. Truthfully, the answer is no. I take lots of purses....

Hmmmm, lets see....my big leather purse (the one affectionately called my "suitcase") that I use every day....stuffed and crammed to the nines with everything I "think" I'll need (but I've gotten better...I no longer carry the kitchen sink with me at all times) :D That one fills up to overflowing when travelling...passport, EReader, sunglasses.....all the extra stuff I have to carry!

Then there are my "summer purses", the bright colourful ones, the pink one, the orange one, the yellow striped one ....guess it depends what I'm wearing and how I'm feeling that day lol. Most of these are the mesh/straw types (considerably smaller for me but still over the shoulder bags) that still hold lots of stuff, of course.

Then there are the little evening bags...those darn things; they simply make my life a living ****! They cause at least a half hour of frustration each and every evening when I'm trying to cram so much into them and the lipstick keeps falling out or the travel toothbrush sticks out and once I finally get the flipping thing closed it invariably pops open! And I'm trailing things along the hallway as I go! Sooooo, I got another one, (like I really needed another purse ) with a clasp! What a brilliant idea I thought! Much better than that silly little magnet thing on the other one that keeps popping open! I figured this one would stay closed! Yes, it does, but I can only get it closed if I take 3/4 of the stuff out of it!!

Then there's my beach bags . First there's my bright colourful big one (of course) that holds everything; including my purse of the day!! ;) Ok ok, this one sort of looks like a duffel bag! But it's really pretty! Then there's a smaller ( well a little smaller anyway) pretty aqua coloured one (we are on the ocean after all) that I bring to the pool or serenity deck. It holds all the stuff I need for those places (and more). Then there are the my various waterproof ones, those can be filled as needed and taken ashore if desired.

Then there is my suitcase to carry all these purses lol. And of course my shoes....but thats a whole other story!

So, yes, I take purses! :o

I carry a cross body purse for travel since I do come in early pre cruise and need something to hold valuables, money and electronics. Once I get on the ship, it and my mom's purse both go in the safe. During the day, I use a string type backpack for my s&s card, sunglasses, camera, etc and to have a place to stash my clothes and shoes while I'm in the hot tub or something.

Since it's just Mom and I cruising, we don't really have pockets at night so we each use small purses for our s&s card, camera, lipstick, eye drops and reading glasses.
