marshhawk Posted June 29, 2013 #80 Share Posted June 29, 2013 I am the keeper of the paper work, I take a large purse with all the documents we need. When I get into the cabin, I take the wallet out, and the passports and lock them in the safe, put the purse in a drawer, put my Sail and Sign card in a Lanyard, put on the lanyard, and I am done with messing with purse for the entire cruise. I buy my lanyard at office depot, it has a clear section for the S & S card, and a small zippered purse in the back, where I will put in a few bucks, for extra tips:) During the evening, since my dresses dont usually have pockets, I take a small evening bag to hold my smokes and lighter. I think this next cruise I will purchase an evening bag at the 10 dollar store on the ship, I was very happy with one I bought several years ago, but the beading has started to unravel since I used it so much. SteelerCruiser Posted June 29, 2013 #81 Share Posted June 29, 2013 My wife takes one of the small purses to carry in ports or around ship if need be but most of the time in ports we just use our backpack.
oncruisecontrol Posted June 29, 2013 #82 Share Posted June 29, 2013 I carry a small bag (with a shoulder strap) with my id, ship card, some cash, credit card (never be without some money) lipgloss, and phone (set to airplane mode so there are no surprises) - - this goes inside my tote-bag that I carry on the ship. I always like to keep my id on my own person, you need it getting on and off the ship (ship card too) and if you get separated you want it with you, or at least I do, same reason for carrying phone in ports, emergency use only. You make some excellent points here.
CatlinSTJ Posted June 29, 2013 #83 Share Posted June 29, 2013 I take one with me, but I don't carry it around the ship. For this trip I have a convertible crossbody/backpack Bagellini for when we're in port and before and after the cruise. Love it!
cruiser87654321 Posted June 29, 2013 #84 Share Posted June 29, 2013 I always have a bag of some description with me, onboard daytime, a bag with a Kindle, sunglasses, tissues, etc. Shore side a larger tote bag with sundries in it. MDR bag always matches shoes.

meme2manthajoe Posted June 30, 2013 #86 Share Posted June 30, 2013 I have a large purse I bought for my first cruise. I now use it for every vacation. It is largeenough to carry our money in three different areas, my wallet with ID and cc, camera, and any other neccessities. It has a long strap that goes across my body and it provides a place to carry anything we think we may need on whatever trip or vacation we are on. LaceyJenee Posted June 30, 2013 #87 Share Posted June 30, 2013 We plan on taking one of those drawstring back packs for our personal stuff, especially in port. I will bring my purse on the ship but keep it in our room.
SeagoingMom Posted June 30, 2013 #88 Share Posted June 30, 2013 Oh my! Well, the question was do I take a purse. Truthfully, the answer is no. I take lots of purses.... Hmmmm, lets see....my big leather purse (the one affectionately called my "suitcase") that I use every day....stuffed and crammed to the nines with everything I "think" I'll need (but I've gotten better...I no longer carry the kitchen sink with me at all times) That one fills up to overflowing when travelling...passport, EReader, sunglasses.....all the extra stuff I have to carry! Then there are my "summer purses", the bright colourful ones, the pink one, the orange one, the yellow striped one ....guess it depends what I'm wearing and how I'm feeling that day lol. Most of these are the mesh/straw types (considerably smaller for me but still over the shoulder bags) that still hold lots of stuff, of course. Then there are the little evening bags...those darn things; they simply make my life a living ****! They cause at least a half hour of frustration each and every evening when I'm trying to cram so much into them and the lipstick keeps falling out or the travel toothbrush sticks out and once I finally get the flipping thing closed it invariably pops open! And I'm trailing things along the hallway as I go! Sooooo, I got another one, (like I really needed another purse ) with a clasp! What a brilliant idea I thought! Much better than that silly little magnet thing on the other one that keeps popping open! I figured this one would stay closed! Yes, it does, but I can only get it closed if I take 3/4 of the stuff out of it!! Then there's my beach bags . First there's my bright colourful big one (of course) that holds everything; including my purse of the day!! Ok ok, this one sort of looks like a duffel bag! But it's really pretty! Then there's a smaller ( well a little smaller anyway) pretty aqua coloured one (we are on the ocean after all) that I bring to the pool or serenity deck. It holds all the stuff I need for those places (and more). Then there are the my various waterproof ones, those can be filled as needed and taken ashore if desired. Then there is my suitcase to carry all these purses lol. And of course my shoes....but thats a whole other story! So, yes, I take purses! :o Perhaps we will meet up on a cruise one day. I am sure I will be able to pick you out in the crowd. You will be the one wearing several purses, a pair of shoes, pretty lipstick and .... oops! nothing else! oh, yeah, the sunglasses -- so no one will recognize you! :):):)
kathy884 Posted June 30, 2013 #89 Share Posted June 30, 2013 Do I take a purse -- yes I bring one on the cruise When I'm on the ship: just going to the pool, to play mini golf, to go look at pictures, to eat dinner, visiting family in other rooms, to a show, walking around the ship -- NO // I can get by with just a sign and sail card or a sign and sail card and some sunscreen When I'm in port: for walking around or something like an island tour --official tour or taxi tour YES (just like doing an outing/tour in the states I take a purse and a back pack) When I'm in port and will not have my purse with me at all times or would find a purse to be a pain to have -- NO (same logic I use in the states when on day trips or vacation). -- Examples: For a beach excursion in port or snorkeling - no (I have a little money holder I can keep around my neck with ID, credit card, and a little cash that is waterproof -- works great for playing in the waves, etc.) // zip line excursion ID, money, and credit card in zipper pockets - back pack just has water and sunscreen (wear cargo pants or cargo shorts for something like that). If I don't bring the purse, I don't bring the original passport, but do bring a photo copy of the main page.

kathy884 Posted June 30, 2013 #91 Share Posted June 30, 2013 There are lots of different styles, brands, places where you can get things like this, etc. Something like this, though, is great and what I use instead of a purse for ID, sign and sail card, credit card, and a little cash at the pool, at the beach, snorkeling, or at a water park. // Lets me keep ID, etc. with me. This particular one isn't big enough for a passport or car key, so consider your own situation when picking one. On a cruise, though, if I'm doing beach or snorkeling, I don't bring along the official passports, just a copy and we don't have car keys with us. Same is true for us on upcoming trip to Hawaii, where we will walk to the snorkeling beach, and we are in the USA, so passports will stay home on the mainland. http://www.amazon.com/camera-photo/dp/B00022UDYE
wmowan8485 Posted June 30, 2013 #92 Share Posted June 30, 2013 I do have a Vera Bradley wristlet for the ship. Now I am looking at getting the mini hipster for arriving at port... :D
Debinnova Posted July 1, 2013 #93 Share Posted July 1, 2013 The first is a pic of my "port bag" that I just purchased. It is approx. 9" x 6" and is crossbody and lays close to the body for security. It is big enough to hold a small water, sunglasses, map, etc. Then the little black Calvin Klein crossbody with the chain handle is what I will use around the ship on a European or non-island type cruise. It's also great for the casino at home! It is fairly small! Then the 3 bags together are my evening bags - all can be clutches or used with chain handles. And for an island type cruise - I would find more summary versions of small crossbody bags. I cannot stand to carry a regular handbag or tote around; and I would lose a wristlet within minutes - I know I would end up laying it down! meme2manthajoe Posted July 1, 2013 #94 Share Posted July 1, 2013 On my last cruise someone left their purse in a booth on the Lido:eek:. I can't even imagine the sense of panic one would feel. I quickly located an officer and turned it over to him and just hope the lady found it.
webehicks Posted July 1, 2013 #95 Share Posted July 1, 2013 I, too, am a Vera girl (posting on my DHs account here, so don't give him funny looks :) ). I use my Hipster when embarking to hold all of the documents and everyone's passports, etc. On port days, if we get off the ship, I use the Mini-Hipster to hold S&S cards, IDs, credit cards, Chapstick, camera and, sadly, I now need to take the reading glasses with me. I take a wristlet to dinner so that I can have my camera and the annoying reading glasses (to see the menu). It sounds like a lot, but on a typical day onboard I just have my S&S card on a lanyard & my small camera in a pocket. If we're heading to a beach, then I have the huge beach bag and everything just gets dumped in there. But we don't hit the beach that often... TravelBone1977 Posted July 2, 2013 #96 Share Posted July 2, 2013 Even if you carry a purse or backpack, I *highly* recommend getting one of those hidden "money belt" waistbands, one that is big enough to keep some cash and your boarding pass. You can easily forget or lose a bag in a taxi, and while pickpockets don't seem to be a huge problem, why take chances. Without that boarding pass and a little cash for a taxi, you'll have fun trying to get back on the ship. Something like this would be a good insurance policy for under $10: Hidden Money Belt
jsfromsc Posted July 2, 2013 #97 Share Posted July 2, 2013 I use a small purse at dinner because a backpack, especially on formal nights just wouldn't do. :) But I have allergies and I have to have Kleenex with me at all times. Also like to have any medications I might need on me, my S&S card, a comb, etc. But often when I travel, I put my travel docs, ID, etc. in a carryon bag and pack a small purse to use when needed. My husband and I also have some Rick Steve's money belt thingies that can go under your clothes so are not visible like a fanny pack.
HeatherC430 Posted July 2, 2013 #98 Share Posted July 2, 2013 No purse. On embarkation day, I carry my travel docs in my carryon. During the cruise I use my wristlet onboard all day everyday. When in port, I use a beach bag in addition to my wristlet.
mkailene Posted July 2, 2013 #99 Share Posted July 2, 2013 I use a thin sport backpack during the day on the ship, a heavier backpack for ports, and a small clutch for the MDR.
Jane2357 Posted July 2, 2013 #100 Share Posted July 2, 2013 I do always take my purse as I use it on the way too and from the cruise, once onboard - it gets shoved under the bed. I either have my sail and sign and lipstick in my pool/beach bag or if in port a small cross body bag or a backpack. In the evenings I do carry small wristlets or a beaded bag on formal nights.
