Early May 2014 Alaska Cruise

Be warned - Alaska weather doesn't follow a regular pattern - just because your week had perfect weather one year doesn't mean it does every year.

On average, Alaska weather is colder in early May than in late May, just as it is pretty well everywhere in the Northern hemisphere. If you go in early May, you might get the best week of the entire season. Or you might not.

I like cruising Alaska early.

Weather does change not only in Alaska but in many places.

For example, what will the weather be like in New York City on May 1? Could we cold, warm, hot, rainy sunny or windy.

Same for Alaska.

I now prefer Alaska early in the season because for me it means less people with many children/families still in school. So for me early is great. It might be cooler but who knows for sure. You will likely see more snow on the hills which I enjoy.

We did early May a few years ago. Loved all the snow. Was pretty misty a lot of the time. We were there late May this year, and had spectacular weather; but, as people have said, it's about the odds and any particular year's weather can vary significantly.

We had a 'hike' turn into a 'snowshoe', which we loved!

Only problem weather-wise on the early May cruise was the humoungous  storm we hit coming back. We were sailing on the open ocean side of Vancouver Island, so the casino could stay open  . We were round-trip out of Seattle; I've read where going to/from Vancouver means you *will* be on the inside (somewhat more protected).

Oh, and let me echo the previous post. We never travel in high summer.
