Well right now Southwest isn't being very nice to me. I'm trying to get home from FLL on April 6th, to San Diego and darn, they want over $500 OUCH!! I was hoping when they opened their schedule to April they would have some good fares, but nope. We are flying into Orlando to do a day at Universal before our cruise, and we got that for $141 one way. Coming home on a Sunday is seeming to be a little more expensive.

Does anyone know exactly what time on 10/14 the rates will open? Is this like a midnight thing? I'm literally going to be camping out so I would like to have an idea if I need to stay up late Sunday night... I have heard that first released rates are some of the best rates and we have plans booked for May...

American has flights as low as $220 that day.

That is peak travel season, and on a Sunday it is even worse. Can you fly Monday instead?

I'm thinking about flying out of Atlanta, does anyone know from pass experience about how much the cost of flying from Atlanta to Fort Lauderdale would cost? any ideas?

Depends on what month. Right now R/T Atl-Fll for travel in early April is $300 - $331 per ticket. This year April those same flights were $224 R/T. This is on Delta tho.

Make sure you check the SouthWest site daily. Earlier this year I was waiting for flights to open up for our Nov. cruise. Their website said the flights would be opening up on such and such a day. Never thought twice about it. Went online bright and early the morning they supposedly were open to find out the flights I wanted were already sold out.

Often when the flights first come out they will mark many as unavailable or sold out, then about a week or so later those same flights will become available.

Don't forget that if you wait and wait and wait for Southwest, and they end up being more expensive than you're hoping for (common), you may have missed out on lower fares that were sitting out there earlier (ie: now) before Southwest plays their late release marketing ploy

SouthWest Airlines is quite unpredictable when it comes to "time" they will open up the bookings. Sometimes it is a little after midnight, other times it has been around 8:00 AM in the morning. Be aware that the postings from SWA are done from Phoenix, AZ, so consider what time it is where you are vs. where they are located.

Also, if you book a fare and then find that the fare goes down, you can always adjust the booking and take a credit from SWA which is good for a year. Always works for me in the end so I hope this info helps.:D

A little education on the way Southwest prices fares is in order on this thread.

Southwest WAITS until all the CHEAP fares have been sold off on other airlines for probably 3 months. THEN they price their fares.

While Southwest policy is to have the LOWEST fare on any given day, the reason they DON'T release their fares earlier is to WIPE OUT the cheaper fares on other airlines. Yes, they may be $10-50 cheaper on the day they OPEN their flights. BUT you may have saved $50-$100 or more by booking your flight on a legacy airline BEFORE Southwest opens their flights.

Southwest is NOT stupid. Their business model WAITS until the other airlines have sold off their cheapest flights. THEN they jump into the fray.

IF you really BELIEVE SOUTHWEST is the cheapest, we have years and years of data that supports they are NOT. 80% of the time we have bought cheaper tickets on the legacy airlines BEFORE Southwest opens their schedule. We buy well over 500 airline tickets worldwide per year.

From smaller airports that have a large Southwest presence, maybe the savings aren't great. BUT from MAJOR airports to MAJOR airports, you will find Southwest MORE EXPENSIVE (even adding in the luggage fees) then most legacy fares booked in advance before Southwest opens their schedule.

Think about it this way. If the CHEAPEST plane ticket on XXX date with AA, Delta, UA, US, etc. etc. was $300 and you could buy it BEFORE SOUTHWEST opens their fares, why in the h*** would Southwest sell you a ticket for $250.00???? They DON'T. They KNOW the going rate is AT LEAST $300 (irrespective of luggage charges). They KNOW the CHEAPO tickets are GONE. They also know the believers in Southwest CHEAP fares THINK they get a bargain.

GREAT MARKETING CAMPAIGN. SOUTHWEST=LOWEST FARES. Only if you are a fool or flying from an airport where the legacy carriers DO NOT fly regularly may you find a BARGAIN from SOUTHWEST. Look into their business model-you will see the REAL SOUTHWEST.

Since I use my points to book flights, all I'm looking for is a good connection to where I'm going and that appears to happen when they first open their bookings. Personally, I prefer to fly SWA!

Also backed up by the Institute of Transportation Studies at my alma mater, UC Irvine. Their study generally concurs with your comment.

I applaud SWA for their brilliant business model (I think you do, too). I saw a business article discussing how SWA takes full advantage of "gaming theory" and uses the same psychological techniques as casinos. Hard to beat the house. :)

"The Anteater" speaks wisely (I grew up in Newport Beach and was there when UCI was built!).

Southwest has done a good job of making people believe they always have the lowest prices. People will not look at any other airlines for low prices, but they will wait months until WN opens up the window for purchasing tickets for their flights. I live in an area with an airport that does have service from all the legacies and WN. I've yet been able to get a price on WN that would make me think about going into the cattle car with festival seating over a legacy where I can choose my right side aisle seat and know that I will be "taken care of" if something causes a flight cancellation (to the point of being put on another airline if needed). I always get a checked bag free on DL, so that cost does not figure in for me, either.

The only time I'd consider WN is if I need a one-way ticket; in that regard, sometimes they are the better choice.

Can I ask why you prefer to fly WN?

I'm with slidergirl in being able to pick a seat I want, not having to FIGHT for a seat. And that zoo at the Southwest gates is just amazing. Re-accommodation on another airline is a REAL BIGGIE if you absolutely, positively have to be someplace. You won't get that on WN.

Terminal 4 in Phoenix is also US Air's big terminal So you get Southwest and US all in one terminal. The US Air gates-everyone is sitting, waiting patiently most of the time. The Southwest gates-everyone standing around I guess HOPING they can be first in line. I have no idea what they are all doing but it sure doesn't look comfortable-crowded and confusing.

And don't anyone bring up free luggage on WN. Almost every airline now has a credit card that offers free luggage (at least one bag, some of them two). So that is not even a valid reason anymore.

I have been treated so poorly by Southwest in the past, I refuse to book any flights on WN for myself, my employees or my customers. And that happy, happy, party atmosphere by the FA on WN is very irritating to a lot of business fliers who are trying to prepare for an important meeting. May be great on vacation but I prefer my FA to be professional and quiet, not all bubbly, telling jokes and singing. JMHO
