CaribbeanLuver Posted November 12, 2013 #1 Share Posted November 12, 2013 (edited) I know Carnival doesn't have any. Are there any female CD's on other lines?? Seems strange. Edited November 12, 2013 by CaribbeanLuver
jdd83 Posted November 12, 2013 #2 Share Posted November 12, 2013 Carnival actually has Female CD's. 2 come to mind, Jen and Jamie Dee
Colorado Kat Posted November 12, 2013 #3 Share Posted November 12, 2013 Yes, Jen Baxter (?) has been a CD for years. Go on now and ask why we have no female ship captains.....
TwinPrincessMermaids Posted November 12, 2013 #4 Share Posted November 12, 2013 First thing I thought of was the Dream too.
champagne123 Posted November 12, 2013 #5 Share Posted November 12, 2013 I would think it would be a special woman to do this... If you are married...or perhaps have children, would you be willing to be away from them for long periods of time? More difficult for a woman, I would think...Just my guess. I think there are a few with other cruise lines. Another question is why all of Carnival's capt's are Italian?

Rirruto Posted November 12, 2013 #8 Share Posted November 12, 2013 Looking at the CD schedule, it looks like there is at least 3; Risa Barnes, Jaime Dee, and Jen Baxter.
CaribbeanLuver Posted November 12, 2013 Author #9 Share Posted November 12, 2013 Oops, I must have missed them. I scanned the schedule. Still very skewed.

More difficult for a woman, I would think...Just my guess. I think this is a very 1950's view point. There are plenty of women who are choosing not to get married or have children. There are also plenty of women in their 20's who will wait until they are older. I don't see how this would be any more difficult for a woman than it is for a man. Phlybice Posted November 12, 2013 #12 Share Posted November 12, 2013 Oops, I must have missed them. I scanned the schedule. Still very skewed. I wouldn't think sex would be a primary reason for selection. I would hope it was ability and talent.

There are lots of other women officers and staff members on board. Those women have families, somewhere, right? :D

Colorado Kat Posted November 12, 2013 #15 Share Posted November 12, 2013 Another question is why all of Carnival's capt's are Italian? I had heard that originally, the owner of Carnival (Was that Mickey Ariston?) was told that all the best captains were Italian. Therefore, he only hired Italians for the job. I'm betting a lot of money that the person who told him that was Italian.... (I'm Italian - I can make jokes...)

More difficult for a woman, I would think...Just my guess. Why would this be different for a CD than any of the other female crew members? I have met many Special Women working on cruise ships. Our head waitress on the Pride had just come back from a 2 month break after having her 3rd child. She said her Carnival job is paying for private school for here 2 older children and will pay for all 3 to go to college. She would only get to spend a few hours each week in her home port with her baby but was making a better life for everyone in her family.
Jbird81 Posted November 12, 2013 #17 Share Posted November 12, 2013 I believe a lady named Lesley is also a CD, although she might go back and forth. She was the Assistant Cruise Director to Gary when I was on the Dream last year. I remember seeing her being the full CD on a few cruises.
maldenmusic Posted November 12, 2013 #18 Share Posted November 12, 2013 Risa Barnes was our CD on the Fantasy a couple years ago. I think she is still with CCL.

guxu Posted November 12, 2013 #20 Share Posted November 12, 2013 To be a CD, she has to be funny. To be funny, she has to tell somewhat dirty jokes. I think that's one of the reasons there are fewer female CDs.
Rare jimbo5544 Posted November 12, 2013 #21 Share Posted November 12, 2013 Loved Jamie Deitch. Good assitant and I am sure a good CD. Funny and a real person.
njmomof2 Posted November 12, 2013 #22 Share Posted November 12, 2013 Royal Caribbean has Captain Karin Stahre-Janson and might still have Lis Lauritzen. P&O has Captain Sarah Breton, and Cunard's Captain Inger Olsen. And it appears Silversea promoted Margrith Ettlin to Captain of the Silver Explorer earlier this year. So while there is still a disproportionate number of men vs. women at the helm, these women are breaking new ground in the cruise line industry. DirtyDawg Posted November 12, 2013 #23 Share Posted November 12, 2013 ...So while there is still a disproportionate number of men vs. women at the helm, these women are breaking new ground in the cruise line industry. The phases "breaking new ground" and "women at the helm" probably shouldn't be used in the same sentence. I thought "not breaking new ground" was lesson number one at Captain's school. ;)
TwinPrincessMermaids Posted November 12, 2013 #24 Share Posted November 12, 2013 You're on the Carnival forum, not NCL! I've never been on an NCL. All I know is that practically all the ship captain's I've heard on the com had accents and names like "ollafsson". I remember from each cruise thinking "I guess they all come from Norway or Sweden etc."
