MSC Cruises

Wondering why there is so little written about MSC Cruises here and also followers of the MSC Roll Calls. We did one from South America to Genoa on the Orchestra last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Beautiful good size balcony cabin, very classy clean ship, good entertainment and even a better layout and service than HA. Considering Iceland and Arctic Circle in June 2014. Has any one got any MSC info be it good or bad, that they wish to share. Are there underlying problems ? I subscribe to regular MSC newsletter and am amazed at the pricing which often includes extended airfares ex Australia.... Good value ! Is it just a case of the other companies having the monopoly.?

The main reason is just that MSC don't sail here.

There also wasn't a lot of discussion about Carnival and Celebrity before they sailed here (much). Now look at them. Another example is NCL.

I agree with you about the ships. Best I've been on.

We are currently looking at something for 2015 for either the Med or Africa, have heard both good and bad about them, they have some great fly/cruise package deals. I believe they are bringing a boat in 2015 to Aussie waters as well.:D

Med cruises are known for being port intensive, so your cruise ship can be looked on as a hotel that floats you from one hotspot to another.

MSC do have some very good fly cruise deals....if you could get one and then extend it for a pre/post cruise stay it would be ideal..:):)

That is what we were planning, but i found some small print that says the flights can only be extended out by 21 days. This may not be too much of an issue just that it may not suit the land tour we were looking at.:D

Smoking onboard??? Announcements in multiple languages??

Barry

Smoking ...I agree, but I think it is good for us English speakers to realize that our language isn't everyone's mother tongue.

cheers

The smoking is not significantly different to the policies other lines such as RCL and Celebrity have had until recently. Most areas do not have smoking, the same as with the other cruise lines, and it's pretty easy to travel through the ship without it. It's not like they're lighting up in the theatre, buffet and foyer!

However, smoking is still more prevalent in Europe, everywhere. So unless you want to rule Europe out entirely because of smoking, it's just a case of going with the territory.

Smoking for some would be a plus, they would be in the minority though.:D

SMOKING POLICY

Can I smoke while on board the ship?

MSC Cruises respects the needs and desires of all guests and have considered carefully the subject of those who smoke and those who do not. Conforming with global standards, smoking areas are generally fewer than non smoking, however smoking is freely permitted in areas specifically indicated throughout the fleet (selected mainly because of increased or modified air extraction.)

In general smoking is not permitted in any food service areas (buffets and restaurants), medical centres, child-care areas, corridors or elevator foyers, areas wehre guests are assembled in groups for safety excercises, disembarkation or tour departures, public toilets or in bars directly near areas where food is served. Smoking in all cabins is highly discouraged and because of specific and proven risk of fire, smoking on all cabin balconies is not permitted at any time.

Smoking is permitted in several designated bars on each ship and on one side (indicated by signage) of the principal outer pool deck areas, where ashtrays are provided. Guests are advised by the Cruise Director or daily program to avoid throwing ciragette butts over the side of the ship, where they could be blown back on board and start a fire.

Smoking on MSC Divina Caribbean Cruises

MSC Modifies Divina Smoking for North America In line with smoking policies in North America, MSC is designating additional non-smoking areas aboard MSC Divina when it arrives in the Caribbean.

When MSC Divina departs Venice on November 2 for Miami, its new year round home port, smoking will be limited to two areas. The single indoor area will be the Cigar Lounge, while outdoors, smoking will be limited to the port side of open decks, but away from all bars and food areas.

The Top Sail Lounge (in the ship-within-a-ship area of exclusive suites) and the Black & White Lounge will become non-smoking. The casino will also be designated as non-smoking, but smoking will occasionally be allowed in limited areas for playing passengers at the discretion of the casino manager.

As it has been, smoking is also discouraged in staterooms and on stateroom balconies, as well as in corridors, elevators, stairways, and public bathrooms.

Thanks for posting, I don't smoke but it is still handy to know where the smoking areas are so that you can avoid them. :D

Probably the biggest concern for me is the smoking in the cabins, I am not sure I would appreciate that as the smell tends to hang around.

Does anyone know if they have non-smoking cabins available?

I know what you mean, and they don't have that segregation.

However, I haven't had any issue with cabin odours, and nor have I heard it being an issue for others. I don't know whether it's that people generally respect the request not to smoke in cabins, or they have some very proactive means of addressing any odour.

But whatever it is, in practice it hasn't been an issue in cabins.

If you hang around in bars a lot, maybe it could be, but smoking wasn't even an issue that came to mind as a negative issue onboard.

That is good to know, I don't mind some areas being smoke filled as I can avoid those. I am not anti smoking but when I go to sleep, i do not want to breathe it in all night. I have been in hotel rooms that are supposed to be non-smoking and the smell is in the walls, carpet bedding and curtains and no amount of spray will keep that smell away for more than a few hours.

I know what you mean. I'm sure it's as annoying for the hoteliers when people break the rules, but I've been in non-smoking hotel rooms that I couldn't stay in due to the stench.

I have had a room in a Malaysian 5 star resort once and I had to ask for a different room due to the smell of smoke. It was supposed to be a non-smoking room.:D
