iconoclast Posted December 6, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 6, 2013 I'm booked on the Carnival Pride and reading the reviews of the ship, how many people are just outright offended by Renaissance reproductions. Many people have gone to Rome just to sketch Michelangelo's David. Yet people complain that there's a reproduction of the statue in, wait for it, David's Steakhouse. The severe ignorance about the art that is apparently on board used to make me giggle but now it makes me sad after several months of reading reviews where the star count was discounted just because someone was offended by the Renaissance. Maybe Carnival should have a Dark Ages-themed ship for these folks.

Disagreements about matters of taste can't be objectively resolved.

sofietucker Posted December 7, 2013 #5 Share Posted December 7, 2013 I agree--some folks get all bent out of shape by images of nudes nowadays! Never mind the Renaissance: people on our Greek cruises have been shocked--shocked!--that those spectacular Golden Age marble statues of gods, soldiers, etc. wore no/few clothes. Just an aside: Michelangelo's David is in Florence, not Rome. A copy in the square & the real one in the Academy.;) But famous nudes in Rome include Michelangleo's ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, depicting perfect human beauty--the popes of the past 500 years didn't seem to mind... Dee777 Posted December 7, 2013 #10 Share Posted December 7, 2013 I'm sorry to hear that people are vandalizing the art on the Pride. I enjoyed cruising on her, and I enjoyed the reproductions. I am rather sad that people would be concerned about children viewing works of art such as the statue of David. It's ART.

I would have not known that as we will never pay $35PP to eat on a ship! We can pay for steak anywhere. I like the free restaurant just fine.;)

MsTabbyKats Posted December 7, 2013 #15 Share Posted December 7, 2013 I could never understand why people get uptight about kids seeing a penis or a nipple....but not about them playing violent games, watching violence on TV or seeing real violence on the news. It's the human body....we all have "the parts".

MsTabbyKats Posted December 7, 2013 #17 Share Posted December 7, 2013 As adults we can appreciate art.Do kids understand art at a young age? Kids don't "have issues" with the body. Do they have issues if they see "naked feet" or "naked noses"? There are people who have sexual responses to feet. Should we ban sandals? It's the "grown-ups" that have "the issues" with the body. Sure kids appreciate art at a young age. They all draw with their crayons.
Pine Bluff Posted December 7, 2013 #18 Share Posted December 7, 2013 What they don't see in the steakhouse, MOMA, or Rome, they can see in NG. In oour day, it was the library. Today, on high speed internet. A simple statue is harmless compared to the pot at the end of ones inquiring minds gold.
2 cruzen Posted December 7, 2013 #19 Share Posted December 7, 2013 As adults we can appreciate art.Do kids understand art at a young age? Depending on their age, no they probably don't understand art, but they probably wouldn't be uptight about it either. A 5 or under child might ask, what's that? You explain, and they move on. Above 10, they might get it's naked parts. Depends on the family and how casual/formal you are around the house.

FishonEd Posted December 7, 2013 #22 Share Posted December 7, 2013 Funny story, we were on the Pride walking behind a young mom and her 4/5yr old son. The little guy was looking at the "nude" pictures in the hallway and giggling. He then asked his mom about why some body parts where showing. Mom's seemed not know what to say and then the little guy answered I know "it's history". Smart little guy.

Kids don't have to understand art to appreciate it. Art nourishes intellectual development in children. There's an article from The New York Times Magazine from a week or two ago you should Google (I know I can't link it here.) It's called "Art Makes You Smart" and is authored by two researchers from the University of Arkansas who observed children over a period of time who were part of a local art museum's children's program.
