Formal night on NCL?

Our last cruise with NCL was in 1999 on SS Norway. If I recall we had 2 formal nights. My question, with the new NCL and the Freestyle Cruising concept do I pack my Tux and dinner jacket or has the line gone into Carnival mode :confused:?

Actually CCL copied NCL on this one, Freestyle predates CCL's elegant nights:). NCL has Dress Up or not nights where passengers may dress a little dressier for the photogs, which of course you are free to do on any night;).

They have a "dress up or not" night as well as "Norwegians night out". Last week we saw a combination of everything so it's up to you and what you feel comfortable in. DH wore a shirt and tie a few nights and I wore a few dresses. I personally like to get dresses up a few nights. Enjoy your cruise!

Only if that's what you want to wear to dinner. You will see everything from elegant to jeans on any given night. Dress up or night or Norwegians nights out you see a few more dressed up, but mainly those nights are photo ops, where the photographers are out in full force.

tuxedo's are more prevalent on european sailings. we saw more on the spirit last month thn i've ever seen in the itineraries out of miami or L.A.

OP - Freestyle means you can wear what you want, as long as it's not shorts in the more formal dining room for dinner. As stated, there are a couple of nights that are more likely to have dressed up people, but it's not required. You will not see many tuxes, but that shouldn't stop you from looking your best if you want to do that. Many of us love NCL because we're not required to dress up. :)

 

As a point of reference, I don't remember seeing a tux on either of my NCL cruises. I saw some suits and jackets, some with ties, on the two nights with photographers, but mostly it was a "docker and polo" crowd.

It's changed a lot since then, but be prepared for a great time!

I just got off my first NCL cruise last week on the Jewel and we had 2 dress up or not nights that would have gone unnoticed if the dailies hadn't mentioned them. I would guess that maybe 10% of the men passengers had a jacket or suit and tie and I saw no tuxedoes that I can remember. More women were in nicer dresses and more formal evening wear. I took only jeans and one pair of light kakis to wear for dinner in Tsars and Le Bistro. It was nice not having to bring that extra suitcase with dress up clothes for dinners.:cool:

The last few cruises on NCL had dress up or not nights, on sea days only. I suspect day 2 and Christmas eve and day 9. I always want a tux but I don't own one. I took a jacket and I will this time too, but no ties. I like to dress up but I don't want to go change etc...for the smoke filled casino. Dress pants, button down shirt and great shoes can bridge the gap of a jacket and tie night in any dinning room on any NCL cruise.

That has been my experience on NCL as well -- saw no real difference between "dress up or not" night and any other in terms of how people looked (in other words, pretty casual, maybe a little less so on our Med cruise). That said, OP, if you like getting dressed up for dinner, you are certainly free to do so (but if you wear a tux, you will be in a teensy tiny minority). If you really do enjoy the dressed-up-for-dinner atmosphere (where others are dressed up as well), you need a cruise line like Celebrity.
