First, we don't know what ship you are on, what excursions are offered, what ports you are stopping in, nothing. Really too broad a question.

Second, what interests you? "Best" is a totally subjective, personal opinion. What you think is "best", I may think is a total waste.

Lastly, what if the "best" excursion involved swimming, and you can't swim? You need to look at the excursions offered, and narrow down this question by finding out what interests you.

There us a large variety of possibilities from lounging at a beach to snorkeling to horse back riding to touring etc.

You'll have to read about the possibilities and read the reviews and then come back with your list .

BTW you can also just get off the ship and explore the ports on your own or bargain with a taxi driver for a private tour. There is not just one "best" way to enjoy port days.

We like adventure but also thinking of a whale watching trip. Really we are up to anything we just want to make sure its worth our money. It will just be me and my husband (early 40's)

Popular activities for your cruise are:

Cabo - Dolphin interaction excursions, Whale watching, any combination of glass bottom boat with beach time.

Vallarta - Any of the various canopy/zipline excursions, Dolphin interaction excursions, beach days via the Pirate ship or Las Caletas or on your own on Vallarta's south side.

As others have already pointed out, the cruise line you sail with and the itinerary you travel increase or decrease your choices. Your cruise might take you to Mazatlan or other off-the-beaten-path ports.

The cruise industry tends to contract with a limited number of established excursion providers for Cabo & Vallarta. These companies are Cabo Adventures and Vallarta Adventures respectively. Resort vacationers can book direct with these companies. Cruise ship passengers must book Cabo/Vallarta Adventures excursions through the ship if the ship offers the excursion.

A popular adventure excursion in Vallarta (available through the ship) is Vallarta Adventure's "Outdoor Adventure". You can see a description of this excursion at: http://www.vallarta-adventures.com/tours/outdoor-adventure

A popular independently booked zipline excursion is Los Veranos. You can see a description of this excursion at: http://www.canopytours-vallarta.com/

Whale watching may be better in the Cabo area.

Enjoy!

Not sure which cruise line you are going on but if you are going to Puerto Vallarta, then see if you can do a tour out to the Marietas Islands.

On Carnival it is called: Whales, Dolphin & Snorkeling Tour

Not cheap, but certainly worth it. The Snorkeling part included kayak, snorkel and beach time. We could have also swam into the secret cave on the other island if it had been low tide :( perhaps next time .....

The buffet lunch on this tour was very good, and we saw quite a number of whales. The trip to get out to the Marietas takes almost an hour, so that is why this tour is ~ 7 hours. I did this tour in December.

Carnival link is below, although search Youtube and other sites for more info.

We always look at the excursions available thru the ship. Look at the cruise lines web site. Once you pick, maybe 2 to 3 excursions then look at this site, trip advisor, google it and look for a tour that has some positive reviews. Sometimes you find things to do that are not offered thru a ship but start with the ship's.

To me in Cabo is a beach day. The white sand beach & clear water is beautiful even in Feb.
