London to Southampton Transfer

Recommended Posts

Looking for some recommendations for car service between our hotel (DT Westminster) to Southampton. Don't really want to do the train or a public bus due to schlepping of luggage.

Thanks in advance for any replies.....:):):)

Car services based at the Southampton end rather than London-based operators tend to be better value & perhaps more personal.

Try http://www.smithsforairports.com and http://www.westquaycars.com

Both are frequently used by CC members.

Expect a cost of around £130.

Or pay possibly as little as £25 total, including a taxi at both ends, by using the train or National Express bus, both are direct services to Southampton. Yes, there's schlepping to do, but it's minimal & no high steps onto/off of trains as in the USA.

Regular train fare from London Waterloo to Southampton Central is about £36, but by pre-booking with http://uk.megabus.com/megatrain.aspx that can be as little as £4 per person.

Megatrain tix can be used on only a few trains, you have to book for a specific train, & tickets are non-amendable. But silly, silly cheap.

No megatrain tix available for sundays.

Journey time about 90 minutes, that's quicker than by car.

Regular National Express tix are about £18 pp, but "funfares" often for just £1.

http://www.nationalexpress.com/home.aspx

"From" is London Victoria coach station.

"To" is Southampton coach station - ignore the cruise terminal option, it doesn't apply to your sailing.

Journey time about 2.5 hours.

Check the terms on the website for luggage limitations/ overweight charges.

Bob,

Are you looking for car service or would a coach do? The London Toolkit website has coach transfer that will pick up at the DT and take you to the pier. I have no experience with the company but have plans to use them in May from Southampton to DT. SB about 45 - 55 GBP each. Hope this helps. Patric

Hi Patric,

The regular National Express coach is way cheaper, even including a taxi fare from DT to Victoria coach station & from Southampton coach station to ship.

Other than the door-to-door (which may include a change of vehicle in London, but luggage taken care of), the big advantage of the one on London Toolkit is that it includes a stop at Stonehenge.

Though their service in the opposite direction (ship to London hotels) offers more stops because its not constrained by the need to get to the pier on-time.

Operated by International Friends, a well-respected coach operator.

Agree we only use car services. Comfort counts! Have used http://www.totallydriven.co.uk many many times and are very satisfied.

Thanks for the tip. As I said, I have no experience in this, but we like to make transfers as simple as possible, as one or more of us may be a bit cranky! :)

What is a rough estimate for taxi fare from pier to Southampton coach station? And for taxi fare from DT to Victoria Station?

Thanks again. Patric

Southampton £5 to £8 depending on which cruise terminal, taxi rank at the coach station.

(to repeat, ignore the cruise terminal option on the Nat Express website, it only applies to Fred Olsen ships)

DT Westminster (that's the one in John Islip Street) to Victoria coach station is about a mile - around £9 to £10.

Expect to fit 4 + reasonable luggage in a taxi.

Nat Express price about £16, often a "funfare" promotion as little as £1.

Don't let me put you off taking the International Friends coach or any other option - they all have various advantages.

But Nat Express coach (or train, using megatrain tickets) is cheapest.

This helps a lot and gives us options to consider. Thanks. Patric
