Venice hotel advice

I decided to post this here rather than the European ports of call as I thought more people might see it here.

We are a family of 4 with two mid teens. I am having a hard time finding a hotel in Venice for 4 that is close to transportation, in a good location, and under $250. Have you taken a family to Venice and found accommodations at a decent price? Since we are only there from 4 pm to 11:00 AM the next day when we embark, I am having a hard time justifying spending hundreds of dollars. On the other hand, when will the 4 of us ever be in Venice together again? I don't want to scrimp too much and miss the experience of a Venice stay. Any suggestions from families who have found rooms for at least a quad at a decent price would be greatly appreciated.

More people might see it here, but the Venice experts will be on the Europe boards. Hotels are expensive, and rooms are much smaller than in US hotels. Our room at the Bonvecchiati was as small as a cabin. Our room at the Best Western Olimpia, just off Piazzale Roma, was a bit bigger. Maybe finding a quad is your problem. But prices aren't going to go down, only up. Wait a couple of months and that $235 will be $350. EM

If you want to stay IN Venice, you are unlikely to meet all your wants. Transportation is by water taxi or walking. Walking may involve towing luggage some distance & likely over rough streets and maybe bridges with stairs. All rooms I have been in were too small for 4. You may need to research hotels on fringe of Venice with access to transportation both into Venice and to the cruise port.

I stayed at the Hotel Olimpia in Venice and found it charming. I chose to stay there rather than get a hotel over on the mainland and have to get back and forth to sightsee in Venice. It is a Best Western property, and while staying in Venice proper may cost a bit more, think of it as just one night splurge in a city you will never forget. I did not regret having paid the higher price because I figured if I never get to Venice again, I will have maximized my time there by staying IN the city.

The Hotel Olimpia is not far from the Piazzale Roma, the transportation hub of Venice, where the buses to/from the airport arrive and depart, and also the People Mover, which is one's access to the port in Venice. One only has to walk across 2 smallish bridges and perhaps the equivalent of a couple of blocks to get to that hotel from the Piazzale.

Not sure of availability or the price, but the Best Western Olimpia is close to Piazzale Roma (the transportation hub of Venice) with Bus to/from airport, taxi, vaporetto office and stop, and the peoplemover to/from the port. AND THEY DO HAVE QUAD ROOMS. But they are costly. 300 EUR for 1 night in June.

Another hotel right in Piazzale Roma is Santa Chiara. They have quads for 289 EUR for 1 night in June.

Another option (and more affordable) is Hotel Tritone in Mestre (the mainland) across from the train station for quick and cheap access to Venice proper. They have a family room for 162 EUR for 1 night in June.

I did a quick search on this website (good for hotels) and the only places I found under $200 were in Mestre or on the island of Lido.

And one final webiste giving you lots of info

Venice is one the most expensive cities in Italy. Only you can decide what you want to pay for. Good luck finding something you can live with. Have a great trip.
