Sherlock43031 Posted January 13, 2014 Author #76 Share Posted January 13, 2014 Quite the tirade. I would like to offer you a word of caution. I would be very, very careful about your actions. If you are going to confront and harass a fellow cruiser about their alleged smoking, or harangue a steward or other hotel staff into doing it for you, I would be very, very sure of their guilt before doing so. Unless you actually visually see the person smoking, you cannot know that the smoke is coming from the balcony directly beside you. Smoke drifts. It could be from several cabins down or even above you. When a ship is sailing at 20+ knots, there is no telling where that smoke could be coming from. If I had someone banging on my cabin door waking me at 2 in the morning and some wild woman having a fit at me (or a steward doing it for her) you can absolutely bet that I would be calling security and demanding that SHE be the one thrown off the ship. So put that in your pipe and smoke it. exactly.. why do people want to go on a cruise and spend their time worrying about what everyone else is doing? ckrobyn Posted January 13, 2014 #77 Share Posted January 13, 2014 Pardon?? Completely disagreed. Why do you continually post such provocative and frustrating comments? Seriously... just wow.. Agreed. Wow.
stewpapa Posted January 13, 2014 #78 Share Posted January 13, 2014 If they get a $250 fee if you smoke, I'm sure they will gladly bring you an ashtray.
Elvis1209 Posted January 13, 2014 #79 Share Posted January 13, 2014 Enough of this smoking garbage! It's been settled. Now, let's do something easier like bringing peace to the middle east! Elvis
Elvis1209 Posted January 13, 2014 #80 Share Posted January 13, 2014 Thanks for your report. Like a couple of the PPs, I am a smoker (who made the mistake of booking our cruise just before they announced the new policy) who is just looking for the facts, not unsolicited snide remarks and nastiness. So according to this report, RCCI's promises of easy access to designated smoking areas with sufficient tables, chairs and ashtrays was just another big fat lie. About what I expected. It would seem that this will, indeed, be our last cruise on RC. On my Allure cruise in September we had to smoke our cigars (I don't smoke cigarettes) up on deck, in the wind, at a designated bar. It was nice having our own place but it still was a step down from the cigar lounges on the Freedom class and Voyager class vessels. Why they would build the world's largest cruise ship and not put in a dedicated cigar lounge is beyond me. I contacted RC and asked if there was going to be a lounge on Quantum and they told me that hasn't been decided yet. It was plain to me that there would be no such place on that ship. Let's face it. The other side won! Congratulations! Guess you can find me every night up on deck! Elvis
peteukmcr Posted January 13, 2014 #81 Share Posted January 13, 2014 It was rampant on my Azamara cruise. That is a fact. So that's how. Now..... Good Day Sir! Ah that was Azamara, and so the behaviour of passengers on that one cruise ship is representative of those sailing on all RCI ships is it? Very scientific I'm sure. This discussion is regarding RCI, and my observations relate to RCI and that line only. So to make a generalisation that it will be GUARANTEED that you will witness the breaking of non smoking rules on a RCI ship is wrong. Thoie Posted January 13, 2014 #82 Share Posted January 13, 2014 I booked the balcony because they were deemed non-smoking. Many people booked balconies before the change was announced, solely so that they could smoke in comfort. If those people aren't active on cruise critic/various other internet locations, the first they will hear about the change in the rules is when they get their tickets, at which point it will be too late for them to change/downgrade to a cheaper cabin. While I'm in favour of reduced smoking areas, I think RCI made a big mistake in the timing. If would have been more reasonable to announce that any sailings that went on sale after x date would have the reduced smoking areas, and highlight the fact at the booking stage. fishtaco Posted January 13, 2014 #83 Share Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) lol? Sorry mate, but folks distress caused by cigarette smoke is not an "over reaction," and laughing at the distress is disturbing to say the least! If you dont believe post #4 is an over reaction then your comment is even funnier:D:D:D Edited January 13, 2014 by fishtaco
lisiamc Posted January 13, 2014 #84 Share Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) Europe has a heavy smoking population. I wonder if it will be in effect over there. Europe also has a lot of legislation in the past 10 years or so to restrict smoking in public areas. Europeans are growing very used to being allowed to smoke only in certain places! I think the balcony restriction will be in effect there too. Edited January 13, 2014 by lisiamc

Its been this way on Australian cruises for quite some years, you cant smoke on balconies down under:) Even visiting USA ships dont allow smoking in the Casino and even have "non smoking cigar lounges" which is so totally oxymoronic lol Cruises to Asia from Australia make no acception even visiting USA cruise ships leaving Australia to Asia. Once they start sailing from Asia though its a smoke fest free for all:D Edited January 13, 2014 by fishtaco

NanaP1398 Posted January 13, 2014 #88 Share Posted January 13, 2014 IF you have been on an RCI cruise that embarked Jan 1 or after what did you actually observe? please do not post what you wish, what it was, what you heard from a friend of a friend or what you read on CC. I am especially interested in Serenade of the Seas. I am booked for March 1st out of Nola and one of those cruisers who didn't know about the change in policy until after everything was paid for. Guess I live under a rock!

nanwel Posted January 13, 2014 #90 Share Posted January 13, 2014 It had been coming for a long time. I only disagree that they change the policy in Asia. In Canada, we have not allowed smoking in Casinos for years, and the Asian population still come by bus loads to them. On Legend 2 yrs ago, was not happy that they smoked in the Solarium, so I went to my balcony, and was happy not to have smokers beside me. Hope fines will be in place for balcony smokers on ALL cruises, why change the rules for a few?? We all know some day, there will be no smoking anywhere on any ship. Sign of the times! I can sympathize with your disappointment, but let me offer another perspective. Having a balcony affords you some lovely views, peaceful sunrises and sunsets, a quiet place to retreat in the afternoon and connect with the ocean! While I always enjoyed being able to have a cigarette and beverage on my balcony, it's just one of the many things I enjoy about having one, and I would still book them in a heartbeat even though you can no longer smoke on them. So, try and enjoy the other benefits of having a balcony, and resign yourself to the fact that your smoking has to be done elsewhere!
Porky55 Posted January 17, 2014 #96 Share Posted January 17, 2014 I'm sorry if you misunderstood - as an ex smoker of now six years I can appreciate your feelings. On all three Royal Caribbean ships we have been on, Voyager being the most recent, smoking rules were the same as those on shore in Australia in any public place. You can smoke on the port side of the pool deck - and there are "lots" of tables and chairs for every smoker - I never saw a problem there, or an unhappy smoker. On deck 5 which I think is the outside Promenade Deck - port side again there weren't any tables and chairs but there were banana lounges etc and again the smokers seemed very much at ease. Surely we are now used to having to go outside to smoke and cruise ships are after all just hotels - inside which no one smokes anymore anyway? ginadc Posted January 17, 2014 #100 Share Posted January 17, 2014 Cigarette smoke is classified as an irritant rather than an allergen, but it certainly has been found to seriously aggravate existing allergies and asthma, with regular exposure also predisposing people to developing allergies and asthma. So while it may be technically incorrect to say that one is "allergic" to smoke, arguing that semantic distinction misses the larger point that people with allergies and asthma--of whom there are millions--do have strong reactions to cigarette smoke.
