RickSue Posted January 30, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 30, 2014 Rocking here in the gulf. 14 afoot seas. 51 knot winds. Have to cut short by one day. Will be arriving Houston 10 pm Thursday night and everyone has to disembark Friday morning. Not sure how that's going to work with so many of us flying out on Saturday. They are using Friday to disinfect for noro. As there have been some cases reported. The port of Houston is supposed to be socked in with fog Friday through possibly Sunday so captain wants to make it in before that. No more cruising from Houston for US. Good cruise but the is starting to suck. Bread for dinner anyone?

lovevacadays Posted January 30, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 30, 2014 It doesn't sound like fun. I hope everyone makes flights, etc. ok. From what I have been reading, cruising out of Houston comes with some real challenges.
douglinc@msn.com Posted January 30, 2014 #4 Share Posted January 30, 2014 I wonder if Princess will reimburse everyone or hotel bills if they have to spend an extra night in Houston before their flights??? Doug
MarkSeattle Posted January 30, 2014 #5 Share Posted January 30, 2014 Sorry to hear this. Seems like the new port's sailings have had more issues than not.
DrivesLikeMario Posted January 30, 2014 #6 Share Posted January 30, 2014 I'd be making a hotel reservation or two immediately. Get one booked now before it's too late!
caribill Posted January 30, 2014 #7 Share Posted January 30, 2014 On another thread someone on the ship posted that Princess asked what airport people were flying out of in order to make a hotel reservation near that airport.
RickSue Posted January 30, 2014 Author #8 Share Posted January 30, 2014 New info. Calmed down by midnight but still 4 foot seas. Not bad. Princess is providing hotel and transfers. Also refunding for one day and 20percent off next cruise. We will dock about 10pm tonight
Mekamax Posted January 30, 2014 #9 Share Posted January 30, 2014 The compensation is nice. Fog has been a problem this year as we have had one of the coldest winters here since 2009. Not a normal year at all and has caused a lot more fog. You went through the arctic Northern that came through Houston on Tuesday to cause the waves. Glad you are safe and the waves have calmed down. Thank you for keeping us informed.

Katecat Posted January 30, 2014 #11 Share Posted January 30, 2014 Thank you for the information provided on your cruise. So glad that Princess is compensating. I think that they are trying to do their best, but I do question cruising out of Houston again. Too much planning involved.

timbom Posted January 30, 2014 #13 Share Posted January 30, 2014 Makes me wonder when Princess will pull out of the Bayport terminal. All these delays must be costing them a tidy sum. Why can't Galveston upgrade their facilities so we can shut this white elephant of a terminal down. I can remember times several years ago where the port was closed for so long the refineries ran out of feed stocks.
satxdiver Posted January 31, 2014 #14 Share Posted January 31, 2014 Princess signed a multi-year contract with Houston to use Bayport so breaking the contract would be a problem. Also Princess received a very sweet deal in moving from Galveston to Bayport that is worth a lot of money which would make the decision even more difficult than just losing money because of breaking the contract. This winter has been on of the roughest in years here in south Texas. What has occured so far cannot be extrapolated into what will happen next winter. However we do hope that the winters to follow are back to our usual more mild winters. Some of the fog issues Princess has had with Bayport also hit Galveston so moving to Galveston would not solve all their problems.
timbom Posted January 31, 2014 #15 Share Posted January 31, 2014 I don't know where you get your info but this winter except for the last two fronts has been warmer than normal. The warm air is what causes the fog. That is why so many early sailing's had problems and with seventy plus temperatures this week end we are going to have more fog. caribill Posted February 1, 2014 #18 Share Posted February 1, 2014 From the Princess web site From the Princess website: Statement on Caribbean Princess Early Arrival Into Houston January 31, 2014 Caribbean Princess Update: Caribbean Princess has returned to the Port of Houston and passengers have disembarked. The ship was forced to return to Houston one day early because we were informed that dense fog was expected to close the port for much of the weekend. The ship did not return early because of the increased incidence of norovirus on board, despite some media reports. On January 29 we received the following weather report from ImpactWeather, a respected weather forecasting company, which prompted our decision: Two fog events are expected during the next week. The first is expected to begin Friday morning and last through Sunday afternoon. Southeasterly winds are expected to bring increased moisture into the area. This will lead to the formation of the fog on Friday. There will likely be patchy fog in the morning and early afternoon. However, dense fog should form in the late afternoon and evening hours. Breaks in the fog are not likely until the cold front moves offshore late Sunday morning or early Sunday afternoon. Thus, we are expecting that the ship channel will be closed for parts of Friday, all day Saturday, and Sunday through the afternoon hours. The second fog event will begin about 24 hours after the first event ends. This is because southerly winds will become reestablished over the area, once again bringing moisture into the area. This second fog event is expected to end late Tuesday, when another cold front moves offshore. Thus additional closures are likely from late Monday afternoon or evening through late Tuesday. Regarding the illnesses onboard this past cruise, Caribbean Princess experienced an increase in the number of reported cases of gastroenteritis among passengers, which was confirmed to be caused by norovirus, a common gastrointestinal illness which is currently widely circulating throughout North America. In response, we immediately implemented aggressive and comprehensive disinfection measures developed in conjunction with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As a result of our actions, case numbers declined significantly and by the end of the cruise there were no passengers with active symptoms. Over the course of the 178 passengers (5.7%) and 11 crew (1%) reported ill to the Medical Center. We notified the CDC who boarded Caribbean Princess this morning to oversee the extensive sanitation program planned over two days. The next cruise will depart tomorrow as scheduled, February 1. RDC1 Posted February 1, 2014 #24 Share Posted February 1, 2014 Yes but was it DENSE fog? May not have happened but the Port of Galveston weather forecast on Friday was calling for it. This was the weather forecast on the Port site at noon on Friday. Even patchy dense fog can close the port depending upon size and number. The last thing you want to do is to run a ship into a dense fog patch of any size. Min: 58 F Max: 68 F Day: Tonight Condition: Dense Fog Forecast: Patchy dense fog. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 58. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 20 mph. Img Fog Day: Saturday Condition: Slight Chc Showers Forecast: A 20 percent chance of showers after 7am. Areas of dense fog before 1pm. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 68. South wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Img Rain Min: 58 F Max: 65 F Day: Saturday Night Condition: Slight Chc Showers Forecast: A 20 percent chance of showers. Patchy dense fog after 7pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 58. Rixnsd Posted February 1, 2014 #25 Share Posted February 1, 2014 We were off the boat yesterday AM 7:30. So it is known for the record, we did return early due to the Noro Virus and CDC needed to inspect and coordinate sanitizing. So for those still with heads in clouds we were lied to about the Fog. go pull up the Web Cam now. I do not trust a lying Capt. and did not sit well with family aboard. http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/31/travel/houston-princess-cruises-norovirus-illness/index.html?iref=allsearch
