Hi Everyone,

Just wondering how safe leaving things in your room are. We obviously take general travelling measures.

Do you always need to put your laptop in the safe?

Last time we cruised was 5 years ago (with Celebrity) and wanted to see peoples experiences lately were like.

Thanks!

I doubt many laptops will fit in the safe.

DW and I have sailed 68 voyages aboard cruise vessels. Not once has so much as a paper clip been purloined from our stateroom. Doesn't mean it can't happen. Just means it hasn't happened - to us.

As another poster said, stateroom vaults simply cannot accommodate most computers. A cellular device will most likely fit.

Light-fingered crooks are everywhere. That is an unfortunate fact of life. A bit of good, old fashioned common sense is your best defense.

Here;s hoping no one's cruise is shipwrecked by a low life criminal.

I seriously doubt you'd ever have a problem with your cabin steward or assistant taking anything. They'd be the first suspects in any theft, and the consequences for them would be dire. On first meeting us, a steward once requested that we be sure to use the safe for our valuables and keep the cabin door shut when we weren't around, because, in his words, "if they think I might have taken something, it's..." and he drew his finger across his throat... "for me." Not literally, of course, but he'd be out of a good job.

So can theft happen? Absolutely, but you're much more likely to be the victim of a fellow passenger. Take the usual precautions, not just for your sake, but for the sake of your friendly, helpful steward.

I take my Vacation Vault - I also use the room vault but the vacation vault can be used on excursions also. Google it - we love having it and will take it when we snorkel to attach to the bench on the boat.

Never heard of this - it looks brilliant! Thank you for a great tip!

Jewelry, wallets, travel documents, money and casino chips go in the safe. cellphones and gps are in a desk drawer. Computer, ipad and kindle are on desk (generally charging). DSLR camera with multiple lenses is just in it's case on or next to the sofa.

Never had a problem....hopefully never will.

I think that on a ship we have more chances to loose something than to be stolen. It happened three times to our camera and, everytime, it was returned to the guest relations.

A good practice is to identify some valuables (camera, phone, iPad) with your name and cabin number. It has more chances to be found by a honest person than not. On one ocasion, one of our friend forgot his wallet in the cab and the cab driver came back to the ship to leave it to the ship security and our friend recuperated it at guest relations!

I personally have never had a problem. However, on our last Celebrity cruise 3 months ago, the other couple we were traveling with did have a problem. They had fraudulent activity on a credit card that was inadvertently left unattended in their stateroom. They had inadvertently left their safe open one day when we were all off of the ship for the whole day and that credit card was loose in the safe. They never suspected any issues until we all got home and they saw the charge about a week later. The fraudulent activity occurred during the period of the cruise.

There is no way to be certain that the issue was related to the cruise, but that does seem most likely. It is a credit card that they rarely use for charges. However, they carry it with them when they travel for preferred boarding and express security access in the airport. They put no charges of their own on the card for months prior to the fraudulent activity so they are very suspicious that info from the card was taken when it was unprotected in the room. They called Celebrity to inform them of the issue after they became aware of it, but ultimately the credit card company proved that the charges were fraudulent and took care of it.

The lesson is, always be prudent with your valuables. I often leave laptops, iPads, and other similar items out and plugged into chargers when I'm not in the room. However, I keep money, jewelry, credit cards, passports and other similar items securely locked away.

We kept everything in the safe, or with us, but we didn't bring a laptop. I wouldn't worry about the steward at all. But I wouldn't leave anything valuable in plain sight. I noticed that when they are cleaning the room, sometimes the door is propped open and you can look inside. I'm sure most passengers walking down the hall are trustworthy, but you never know.

I leave my I-pad, kindle, smart phones, jewelry (not exactly the Hope diamond, but gold and gems) and even petty cash laying around. I only use my safe for passports, credit cards and the large bills.

I have had stewards find items that I didn't even realize I had lost in the room, like an earing that was placed on my nightstand that I had not even realized had fallen off the vanity table......

I feel much safer on a ship than in a land hotel because the penalty for stealing on a ship is very severe and the stewards would be fired and left in port...... I don't think most of these stewards can afford to be thrown off the ship and sent back to their country without a job. I also feel like they would not even be able to hide something if they wanted to steal it, as the ship security surely doesn't need probably cause to search their rooms and personal belongings.

I also usually get very friendly with my stewards.

In a land hotel I feel a dishonest worker can just disappear and work at a hotel down the block...... If the item is valuable enough on land I feel someone might just take it and then quit. I also never get friendly with the cleaning people in hotels because I never see them....it is just a different relationship than on a ship where they are in and out of my room all day long, and smiling and asking me about port and telling me about things do in port, or their family back home......I just trust people I guess.

In twelve years of cruising RC and X, we've never had a single thing go missing from our cabin. Granted, we don't leave valuables lying around -- they either go in the safe, or (large items) in drawers, or locked in suitcases, under the bed.

Ironically, my experience is that I can't get rid of anything! I realized once that I'd packed a bathing suit that was totally shot -- so, I tossed it in the cabin wastebasket. That night, I returned to find my ratty old bathing suit folded neatly on my bed. I actually had to pin a note to it, letting the room steward know that I really WAS intending to throw it away! ;)

We've never had any thefts on board the ship, but last DEC while on a shuttle bus from the ship to the port-gate, my roommate accidentally left her day-pack on the shuttle. It was never returned, and we inquired at all the logical/reasonable places that same day. This was in Manta, Ecuador.

We have been cruising with Celebrity since 1990...never ever had a problem...we leave our kindles, change and laptop out all the time. Nor, have I ever heard someone claim they had items missing from their room.

Having said that...I can't guarentee it hasn't happened to others...we just have never heard of any such complaints.

FYI..one time I asked the cabin steward if he had seen my watch anywhere...didn't think he took it...just couldn't remember where I had placed it. When I told him the description he imediately goy his boss and came back to the room to help me look. It was kinda on it's side in the safe...hard to feel and/or see. Yes, I gave him a nice tip for helping me look for it. However, to this day it bothers me that he had to go and report it to his boss. Thank goodness the watch was found while his boss still in the room.

We also had problems with credit card fraud after a Celebrity cruise in October last year.

The card is rarely used but details were given to Celebrity for our Seapass card to pay on board expenses. Several weeks after coming home, the card details were used fraudulently twice on one day totalling $3000. The activity was traced to South America .

We immediately cancelled the card and our bank reimbursed us. I notified Celebrity but apart from an acknowledgment they had received my email, nothing more has happened.

In a recent telephone call to Celebrity about another matter the operator mentioned she was in Guatamala so there is a South

America link there.

All too much of a coincidence .
