How to dress on Celebrity?

Recommended Posts

Hi, We are going on our first cruise with Celebrity cruise lines this December for a 12 night Panama Canal cruise. I have a few questions...

1. Overall at dinner etc. how do we dress? How many formal nights?

2. Has anyone ever(on any cruise line) been to the Panama Canal during December? Is it cold?

Thank you so MUCH for your help!!:)

A 12 night Celebrity cruise should have 6 casual nights, 3 informal nights, and 3 formal nights. You might want to post you questions on the Celebrity board.

As far as dress code goes: from Celebrity's website:

A gentleman's choice for casual nights includes a sport shirt and slacks, while women will be comfortable in a pants suit, skirt and blouse, or casual dress.

On informal nights, men are requested to wear a jacket, shirt and tie, while women may want to wear a suit or dress.

For the formal nights, including the Captain's Welcome Aboard Cocktail Party, dinner on the second night, and the Captain's Farewell Dinner held the next-to-last night of the cruise; both men and women may prefer more dressy attire, such as an evening gown for women and a tuxedo or dress suit for men.

Celebrity Cruises has implemented a casual dining service on its five ships. Casual dining is offered most nights on every cruise, depending upon the itinerary, and is served in the Palm Springs Grill and pool area on the Mercury and at the Oasis Grill and pool area on the Galaxy. On the Horizon casual dining is offered in the Coral Seas Cafe and on the Zenith, in the Windsurf Cafe. On the Century casual dining is available in the Sky Bar. On our newest ships, casual dining is offered at the Seaside Grill and pool on the Constellation, the Oceanview Grill and pool area on the Infinity, the Ocean Grill on the Millennium and the Waterfall Grill on the Summit.

Hi:) I haven't sailed to the Panama Canal but I have cruised on Celebrity 5 times in the last 2 years.

I love to dress up and that is part of what I enjoy about X. I rarely, if ever

have dressy events to attend here at home. So formal nights are wonderful

for me:D

I probably dress up a bit more than a lot of people even on casual nights

but I love it...so I do it.

I think you posted a thread on the same topic over on the Celebrity board.

Hopefully you got some help over there too.

I hope you enjoy your cruise:)

We did Panana Canal on Celebrity's Infinity last October 17-31.

You never know on each sailing as far as dress goes but I would say about 1/3 wore tuxes and the remainder suits. Some even wore kilts and such.

There were a number that pulled out some pretty old suits AKA leisure style from the 70s.

I cant speak for December but its as pretty darn close to the equator and it was warm and humid and the whole time. We would try to avoid smokers as much as possible and after dinner we would walk outside to the other end of the ship to get to the theater (avoiding the casino). I didnt feel too bad walking that in my Tux. There is usually a pretty good breeze. It can muss your hair so be careful. It is humid so I wouldnt stay out their too long.

3 formal nights usually - second night, one the following weekend and the second to the last night.

I packed lots of clothes and even bought more along the way. I haven been charged extra yet so no big deal.

The canal day has minimal ship events because everybody is watching and listening to historian. If you want a view in the upfront lounge get their way early.

Oooh, I could not agree more!!! We live out of sight and sound of neighbors in the country - originally on purpose, but, after more than 25 years, it has its drawbacks: one of them being lack of an incentive to DRESS UP!!! So, yes, let's put on the pretties and the stuffies - why don't men realize how GOOD they look in a tux??? - and enjoy the occasion!! And, I do think that perhaps Celebrity and Holland America are a little more "dignified" Mammabunny (from Michigan)

:)

Oh, and the temperature at the Canal??? HOT AND HUMID!!! The time of year has never seemed to make a difference!.

Carol -

No the casual dining menu on Celebrity is not the same as the dining room. The casual dining has two or three menus that alternate. The following website has menus for quite a few ships. There are sample casual dining menus for the Galaxy and Horizon available. Celebrity menus are basically the same throughout the fleet so those menus should give you an idea of what is available.

Celebrity tends to have passengers that dress up more than the other mass market lines. Unlike cruise lines like Princess, Carnival or HAL, Celebrity asks that you stay dressed in the attire of the evening, for the entire evening if you're going to be in any of the public rooms after 6pm--not many go back and change into shorts and t's after dinner.

As for temps, the Panama Canal is very far south and closer to the equator than you may realize, so their average temps do not change much. When we were there in Feb it was in the 90's and very, very humid.

we have been on two Celebrity cruises, and they were very dressy indeed! Our friends just got back from the Holland America Zuiderdam, and they were disappointed that on formal nights, many of the men didn't even wear a tie! (think jacket and golf shirt). On X, I would say better than half were in tuxes, with the remainder in dark suits. VERY few non compliers to the dress code. We enjoy dressing up, and X is our cruise line of choice. Have fun! • 4 weeks later...

Live_2_cruise05- we are on your sailing on the Galaxy!

Our family sailed last Christmas on HAL and people REALLY dressed up.

My parents and grandmother have been on a ton of cruises and in their opinion, Celebrity and HAL were the dressiest by far...they have not sailed Cunard yet :)

I have already bought two new holiday dresses for my 9 yo dd. I'm also keeping an eye on the JCPenny Online Catalog Outlet for bargains on sundresses for dd.

Last year on HAL we were in port in Barbados on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day was at sea so this was a formal night and Christmas Eve was informal, optional formal. I thought this was really nice!

Quick Reference

Clothing

Guests will need three types of clothing on their Celebrity cruise: casual shipboard attire or day wear, conservative port wear and evening wear.

Day wear includes slacks or pants, blouses or shirts, knit tops or polo shirts. Guests should bring a pair of sneakers or rubber-soled shoes for deck sports and a swimsuit cover-up for cool areas on the ship.

Port wear for women includes a casual dress, skirt and blouse, or pants outfit; for men, casual pants or walking shorts (for warmer days) and polo-type shirts. Comfortable walking shoes are a must.

On cruises to Alaska or Northern Europe, nights on deck can be cool, so bring sweaters, jackets and lightweight windbreakers. We recommend bringing a raincoat, hiking shoes and a travel umbrella.

Evening wear should be planned for according to the following evening dress schedule:

> Cruise Length Casual Informal Formal

5-night 2 2 1

6-night 2 2 2

7-night 3 2 2

8-night 3 3 2

9-night 4 2 3

10-night 5 2 3

11-night 5 3 3

12-night 6 3 3

13-night 7 3 3

14-night 7 4 3

17-night 9 5 3

There is no baggage limitation aboard ship; however, for comfort and convenience, it is recommended that guests limit the number of pieces. Air Arrangements guests are usually allowed two pieces of checked luggage (not including oversize bags and sports equipment, such as golf bags, water skis, scuba equipment, etc.) and a carry-on bag. Check with the carrier for specific instructions.

Important Note: Remind guests to bring along an overnight bag for their last night at sea. Stateroom attendants will collect baggage the night before departing, and a bag will be needed to carry off nightclothes, toiletries and valuable items.

As for my own experience, the PC was very hot and humid, so pack accordingly.

Have fun!

Thanks caviargal! Also wanted to note that if you are flying, airlines are now limiting the weight of each individual suitcase. Check with your carrier's website for the details.

We went through the Panama Canal in October, and it was also humid... I also agree 100% with another poster.... It can rain, so bring some type of lightweight rain gear so you can enjoy any excursion you go on.... I say light weight because even though it rains, in the next second it is humid again....

Still in the evenings, it is not humid, so dont worry about semi formal or formal wear being to hot... I know you did not ask, but if they offer the coffee plantation tour in Costa Rica, consider it... It was so much fun. It is actually local actors that do the tour, and they have you laughing the whole time... We loved it.. The Panama Canal experience is one of my most fondest memories of all of the cruises we have been on... Just incredible...

We did the Panama Canal on Princess, but recently sailed on Celebrity. We have tried a bunch of lines and we found Celebrity a bit more formal. I especially noticed this on the semi formal nights... The ladies seemed to dress a bit more formal then on other lines... Since I am a horrible overpacker.... I rose to the occasion just fine!!

I do have alot of Panama Canal pictures... You may not want to look, thus to spoil the treat you are in for... But should you choose just click on my name, go to my homepage to see.

You are going to have such a great time... Panama Canal, and Celebrityl..Cant beat that combo..
