Rare Colin_Cameron Posted February 20, 2014 #1 Share Posted February 20, 2014 Hi. We've sailed into Manhattan several times but this will be our first time into Brooklyn. What's the taxi situation at Brooklyn Cruise Terminal like? Readily available? Organised or chaotic? Should we pre-book or just wait in line?(we're in no particular rush) Yellow cab or private hire? Any other hints, tips or suggestions gratefully received. Website suggests fare around $30 -$40 (obviously dependent on traffic, etc.). Does that sound about right? Regards, Colin. njhorseman Posted February 21, 2014 #2 Share Posted February 21, 2014 I haven't cruised from Brooklyn, but given the typical shortage of yellow, metered taxis outside of Manhattan, I'd recommend booking a car service. Two of the largest in NY are: Dial 7 http://www.dial7.com Carmel http://www.carmellimo.com These car services have generally been given satisfactory reviews by Cruise Critic members. Something in the $30-40 range sounds right.
Nitemare Posted February 21, 2014 #3 Share Posted February 21, 2014 FWIW I saw so many more Green cabs this past weekend in Manhattan and the Bronx than on the last few visits we've had to NYC. (None would take me to the OTHER Jamaica, though!)
138east Posted February 21, 2014 #4 Share Posted February 21, 2014 Where is Sid? He usually recommends Arecibo - you can call them when you know when you are disembarking and they will come. This saves angst worrying about paying for wait time if you are delayed.
scifisteve Posted February 22, 2014 #5 Share Posted February 22, 2014 I believe you can call a Boro Cab now (the aforementioned Green Taxi) they operate in the outer boroughs but have yet to find listings for them online.

LOL I was on a cruise! Yes and we used Arecibo to get home and it was fine....7187836465.... Boro cabs are licensed to pick up street hails in the outer boros(and outside the Manhattan business district) but can also be used as a limo/car service which you call. When You call them they set a fixed fee. When you street hail them they use the meter. They can pick up(without a call) at the Brooklyn cruise terminal if they come by but not the Manhattan one unless you call them first. I haven't been in one yet. njhorseman Posted February 23, 2014 #8 Share Posted February 23, 2014 According to the NY City Taxi and Limousine Commission website, Boro Taxis are not permitted to pick up fares, whether prearranged or street hail, in the Manhattan exclusionary zone: "Boro Taxi drivers can be dispatched to pick you up in northern Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island and at the airports, but may not pick up any trips – pre-arranged or street hail – in the Manhattan exclusionary zone. " That rule would seem to really discourage them from taking trips into Manhattan because they're going to have to leave Manhattan empty.

Yes, but my point is that the green Boro Taxis are going to try to avoid taking fares into Manhattan because they're going to have to return empty. This creates the equal but opposite problem to what we know happens with the traditional yellow taxis, which avoid taking fares to the outer boroughs despite the regulations requiring them to do it. This creates the equal but opposite problem to what we know happens with the traditional yellow taxis, which avoid taking fares to the outer boroughs despite the regulations requiring them to do it. Horseman is correct. Boro Cabs are just a medallion without the medallion. Your local cab company can assign their cars to it or not or half of them. Paint em that ugly color. The basic thing of the program is to allow non-medallion cab companies to pick up street hails in the outer boros. They were doing it illegally anyway so why now let City Hall not get a cut of the action selling the permit. The can't pickup in the exclusion zone and loose money buy going there. Just like Medallion they are not supposed to refuse a hail but you know it happens all the time yellow or green cab. If you call them, the company can refuse to dispatch just saying no cars are available. Most of the cab companies by me (South Brooklyn) have NOT gotten into the program.
