Shorts in Steakhouse?

We live in San Diego where everything is very casual.

People wear shorts wherever they want but I have never understood the term "dress shorts".

I don't think it is possible to have "dressy shorts".

With that said, the reason we like Carnival is because it is also very casual so wear what you like and enjoy!

I have some "dress shorts" that I call my tuxedo shorts...I usually wear them with tights and boots when it isn't summer.

I just realized I didn't pay attention to whether a male or female posted this question...lol. I think khaki "dress" shorts for men are a totally different story... ;)

Dress shorts are acceptable as long as they are paired with wife beater shirts and flip flops with white socks. :D

For men, dress shorts are different from casual shorts that have cargo pockets and nylon belt. In Tennessee, dress shorts are like Dockers with legs gone and they are for sure dressier than the regular shorts I wear during the summer. I wear "dress shorts" in MDR on cruise casual nights so this is why I asked about the steakhouse as I was told they follow the dress code for the MDR.

I am definitely NOT a "cruise clothes snob" but would never wear shorts to the Steakhouse nor would my husband. I actually think 'Steakhouse" isn't the appropriate name for that dining venue. It's specialty is steak but it isn't like ANY other steakhouse I've ever been in. There are linen tablecloths, and beautiful china and chargers. You can tell the minute you walk in that the atmosphere in there is different. Its definitely a step above the MDR so I would always dress accordingly. Also I wonder when they dropped the dress code. Last September when I cruised it was still NO SHORTS in the steakhouse.

Are dress shorts allowed in the steakhouse on cruise casual nights?

Unless Carnival has recently changed the dress code for the steakhouse, the policy is no shorts and no flip-flops, on casual night or any other night. You might try calling Carnival for clarification. The customer service number is 1-888-227-6482.

The information above was true on our 3 Carnival cruises in 2013. On the Freedom when we got the call to confirm our reservations they went over the dress code. She told us no shorts or flip flops.

On the Magic we happened to stop by the Steakhouse to confirm our first night reservations. DH was wearing "dress shorts" and a tee shirt that he wore to board. The hostess reiterated the dress code and I joked about the luggage not arriving. She said that if the luggage did not arrive, and he did not have long pants and a collar shirt, then we should call the Steakhouse to reschedule our dinner.

Our experience every time in the Steakhouse is that many women wear cocktail attire - lots of black dresses and bling, and a large percentage of the gentlemen wore sport coats. DH always wears his Navy Blazer and I am in the little black dress brigade.

I just called the Carnival info number and the lady said the dress code for steakhouse is the same at the MDR that night, I asked on cruise casual night I can wear dress shorts in the MDR and would that then apply in Steakhouse and she said yes it would.

Are dress shorts allowed in the steakhouse on cruise casual nights?

On Liberty in October, we had reservations for the first night, my boyfriend was wearing dress shorts and he was not permitted in the steakhouse. I waited while he went to change, he came back wearing jeans and looked less dressed up in jeans than he did in the dress shorts. I wrote about it in my review that is in my signature.

From Carnival's website...

*Please note: Steakhouses are only available on Conquest-class, Spirit-class, Splendor-class and Dream-class ships. Please refer to Carnival.com to see if your ship has a steakhouse onboard. Requested dates and times will be honored on a first-come, first-served basis. If requested time is full, the next available time slot will be assigned. Dress Code is Cruise Elegant. Jeans allowed on Cruise Casual evenings. The $35 fee includes an appetizer, entrée, dessert and the wait staff's gratuity; additional gratuities are optional and may be extended in cash or to the guest's Sail & Sign Account, at the guest's discretion. The reservation fee does not include any beverage that is normally ordered through the bar service such as wine, liquor, soda and bottled water. By popular request, all dining rooms are smoke-free. Please allow 2 1/2 hours for dining experience.

All this digging into rules and fine print reminded me of something we'd tell our kids as they grew up...

Just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD...

Personally, I like to notch it up a bit out of respect for my wife. It makes her feel special if I act like I care what I look like.

I don't judge others choices. Do what you want within the rules.

I have had men in my party turned away from the Steak House on the 1st night of the cruise for having shorts on...luckily the luggage had come so they were able to put on pants. :)

Unless Carnival has change their policy, the answer to your question is No. You can wear a pair of blue jeans, but you can not wear shorts of any kind in the Steakhouse. My son had on a very expensive pair of golf dress shorts and he was told he could not be served and he needed to go change. They were nice about it, but he was not happy, because he looked nicer then the guy in the blue jeans.

The term "dress shorts" makes me chuckle, seems a bit of an oxymoron. Especially when coupled with dress socks and shoes... :D

Ahhh, the Bermuda suit!

This is because they are not allowed.

There is no reason to talk to people like they are stupid (if this was not your intention I apologize, but that is how it came across).

I was simply letting the OP know that even on the 1st night, when the dress code is relaxed in the MDR, it is not relaxed in the Steak House.

For the record…I told him not to wear the shorts, so when he got sent back to the room to change, I was able to say "I told you so". :D

I have not seen anyone allowed in the steakhouse wearing shorts. Even onboard my last cruise it said shorts ARE NOT ALLOWED. So don't be surprised if they don't let you in.

That was way harsh and silly of her if you ask me especially since they DO allow men to wear nice shorts on casual dining nights. My DH had done it several times...however, not with a t-shirt or flip flops. He usually wears them with a collared golf-type shirt and his nice, closed-toe, leather sandals (no socks). The first time he wore shorts to the steakhouse he went by before our reserved dinner time and asked ahead of time if it was okay. They said no problem just no t-shirts and no flip flops. I guess it just is different from ship to ship so I would ask before I showed up in shorts. Also, it's been my personal experience that when you call Carnival, they will tell you one thing, but on the ship, they will tell you something else. If this is something you really would like to do...I'd stop by the restaurant before my dinner time and ask them if it would be okay.
