Just got upgraded to an Aft Balcony Cabin, 10668. Has anyone stayed in this cabin? What do I need to know about staying in the aft of the ship? I've never had a balcony before, so do I have to bring anything different?

Thanks in advance!

Its a long walk from the casino. Balcony is nice. No wind. Room is just like every other balcony but I would not book it again as I like to be close to the casino.

I always have a aft balcony cabin and love the aft! I will be on my 6th cruise in October on the Gem for 11-days in Cabin 9658(aft), I have been on deck 11 on the Gem in 2011(aft also), took my first one which was an aft and decided to stay with them. The balcony is so great, leave your door open and hear the waves and enjoy the ocean. Nothing special about the aft as far as I know! Enjoy! Happy sailing!:)

I believe we were in 10668 on the Pearl (sister ship). and the balconies on 10 are the largest in the aft. I actually measured it and it was 10 x 8! It fir 2 loungers and 2 chairs with a small table. I wish I could search the forum but it is disabled as I had posted a review and pics. It is a great cabin with a great balcony!

Hi Jack,

Congratulations! Imho, Deck 10 is the best deck to be on in the aft of the Jewel-class ships (the Jade, Gem, Jewel and Pearl); the balconies on that deck are deeper, and you only have cabins above and below you. You will also have a wonderful view of the wake. And since there are three sets of elevators/stairs on these ships, it will be very easy to get around.

This photo is of the aft-facing cabins on the Jade; the Gem will look the same. The woman in the middle is standing on the balcony of 10668. Enjoy your cruise!

We were in this cabin on our 10 day to Eastern Canada in 2012 and loved that bigger balcony. Really didn't feel much extra motion and loved sitting out of the wind. Something about watching the water from the back......would do it again in a heartbeat.

As we get closer to port, I turn on the tv (bow camera channel) and check it to see what might be coming up so won't miss anything.:)

Been in this cabin on the pearl and the gem and it is bigger than regular balconies for sure. It is very far from casino, but very close to great outdoors..a quick walk to aft stairs then 2 flights up. You also get great bakery smells on the aft balconies. Enjoy!

Although my wife and I prefer the views offered by a traditional side balcony, many people seem to prefer the aft balcony cabins.

Here's my take:

Advantages:

-Less wind

-Larger balcony (in certain cases)

Disadvantages:

-More motion (not ideal if you're prone to motion sickness)

-More noise from the turbulence/wake of the ship

-More vibration from the engines

-Not ideal for views of sailing into port.

Enjoy your cruise!

I'm not an "aft lover," I can take it or leave it, but I haven't found most of those negatives about the aft.

More noise? I've sailed now in two aft-facing cabins, and I've never heard noise from the wake inside the cabin. In any event, the sound of the ocean is wonderful. Haven't felt engine vibrations. And as for not having ideal "views of sailing into port," that's probably true of just about every cabin that's not in the bow. In any event, other than in those cabins, being up on an outer deck is probably the best place for a sail in. And, depending on the port, the view from an aft-facing balcony during sailaway can be pretty spectacular.

You are correct, though, that if the ship is pitching, that motion will be felt more in the bow and stern than it will in the middle of the ship.
