Rental car in Fort Lauderdale after cruise on Allure

Hello...newbie here :)

We are cruising on the Allure in April and we have a 7:30 pm flight home, so we have the whole day to kill. Was thinking we would rent a car for the day to do some exploring. Are there car rental agencies right at the port?? or would we need to go to the airport to get a car?

THANKS!!!

I have a million more questions...but have found a lot of answers already reading these boards..You all are very helpful!!! :)

I don't recall seeing any rental car companies on the port itself, however if you have a rental car reservation, most companies will send a shuttle to the port to pick you up and take you to the actual rental car lot. I did that once with Hertz and it worked out well.

All of the main car rental companies have desks within Fort Lauderdale airport, within a special facility. There are regular shuttles from the port to the airport. The desks are located within a large facility to the left of the main terminals and you can walk across a bridge to Termnal 1 although you will need to hop on a shuttle to get to terminals 2,3 and 4 - you could walk but Terminal 4 is a fair distance.

Dollar do have a facility close to the dock, and shuttles will pick you up and drop you off.

Because the port is pretty manic on disembarkation day we tend to get a taxi to the airport rather than wait for a crowded shuttle, and it certainly saves time. The taxi will take you right into the facility too.

We also did the taxi over to the airport and then rented...with a reservation this took lass than 1/2 hour! I might even have the "exact" times in my Allure review in my signature. Unless you have a huge group that would be costly to taxi over to the airport, it's easier to take all your people and their stuff at once than try to send one person out and then drive back to pick up the rest. The port is pretty chaotic on "change" days, we found it best to get to the airport and then be on our way.

Alamo/National is the only company that has a fixed stop with bus always waiting at the Allure/Oasis terminal 18. They are the only company with shuttle to the airport as all other companies that have shuttles use remote off port locations. The rental car center is connected to Terminal 1 with shuttles offered to terminals 2, 3 and 4.

An Alamo or National booking or return receipt must be shown to use the port to airport bus.

Budget has one right outside the Port entrance. Just pick the "Port Everglades" office. They will send a shuttle, but if you are in a hurry grab a cab and head out. They are in a small strip mall on 17th St. Very close and convenient, and you can drop the car at the Airport with no extra fee.

Hi ellie1145, just wanted to gently correct you on this and the post that follows does so -->

Indeed, and we know this from experience.

OP, if a shuttle bus is important to you, then you will need to look into a company with one, as not all of them shuttle from FLL. :)

And, right now, the rates are low.

All companies have some access to Port Everglades.

Alamo/National - number of large busses with own stop at Terminal 18 (Allure/Oasis) and only company with transport to AIRPORT FLL. When one bus departs another takes its place.

Shuttles that park and then driver comes over to collect their passengers at same area with no stop.:

Budget, rental car large van to 17th street next to Renaissance hotel

Avis, rental car large van to Hyatt Pier 66 Hotel

Hertz, small van to Crowne Plaza Hotel

Thrifty, rental car large van to location just off port at S.E. 24th.

Sixt, small van with call required to remote location on S.E. 6th.

Small vans may require even longer wait in the line that is next to the Alamo /National bus stop.

This is excellent information and something that is asked all the time in the Florida Departures forum. I think you should consider posting this info there. :)
