Non Chip Credit Card at Southampton Cenral

Recommended Posts

I would like to know if anyone has recently used an American credit card (without Chip & Pin or Chip & Signature) to purchase train tickets at the Southampton Central railroad station. We have one Chip & Signature card for backup, but our primary card is a magnetic strip card and a card with the chip is not yet available from this credit card company.

Thanks,

Bob

If you don't use the unmanned ticket machines and go to the ticket counter and speak to a human you will be fine. All manned POS terminals in the UK can still accept swipe and sign cards.

Ditto, you will need an chip card if you want to use an automated ticket machine.

Since you'll be using a manned ticket counter, allow more time to deal with your purchase. There are typically a couple of unmanned machines to dispense tickets to folks with chip/PIN cards. Usually, there's only one human agent to deal with the purchases for "every" American traveler.

Thank you all for the information. I had originally hoped to buy our tickets on the rail website, but found that they will only mail tickets within the UK. They do allow purchase of ticket on the internet site, but require that you use the same credit card to pickup the tickets apparently from a ticket machine. I guess we will just have to get in line to buy our tickets once we are there.:(

May cost more if you wait. Have a chip and pin card for travel from Andrews Federal Credit union called a GlobeTrek card used it all over Europe in ATM. No cash advance fees, no annual fees, and no foreign transaction fees. Don't have to work for a certain company can join by opening an account for $5.00. Figured it saved us over $100 last year while we were in Europe. Gave us the actual rate of exchange the day we used it at the atm.
