I am sorry, but the grass is plain silly

I loved our Silhouette cruise and rate it the best ship we have ever had the opportunity to sail upon. The lawn, however, is the least used area on the ship. Plus, even if we had wanted to use it, we couldn't have, as so much of it was cordoned off for regrowth. What a shame to have so much real estate go to waste! I saw the cabanas in use twice. I am surprised the lawn was implemented on all these ships in this class. I can see having that small area of grass at the aft near the bar, and it would keep the theme alive...but the larger area could be used so much better in my opinion.

I love the grass, and laying out in the sun on a blanket in it. Alcoves usage varies on cruise, some are full all the time, others not so much. Hit and miss.

The grass for me gives some real NATURE to the ship which is so much steel and man made materials. It's nice to have the sense of a lawn for me, and they do lawn games and concerts there periodically too. Unless you stand there for 24 hours in a row, you can't really tell what went on ip there. I've alkyd by it completely empty, then other times, its been full of people playing croquet or other such lawn games. Just irk sometimes Martini bar is empty and no one is using it, but we'd not want to lose that now would we? LOL

Yes it gets corded off sometimes to allow the grass to heal, but it's normally available, but that's mother nature for you...!

I am glad you enjoy it. Seriously. I did spend quite a bit of time at the aft bar on that deck so I feel like I have a fair picture of what goes on there. But you are of course correct in that I didn't have 24 hour coverage, LOL. They did have a concert there one night and I went, but it was not well attended at all. Maybe 15 people total? Maybe it was the performer that didn't appeal but I rather liked him. He was the country singer. I like the small area of grass near the aft. But not the alcove area. Still...if folks actually use it then I am ok with it. It is like the casino. I never set foot in there but I know it is a prime draw for many. So the profit from that area helps keep rates reasonable.

What would you suggest?

Well...there are multitudes of ideas I could come up with, but if a lawn is what people want...at least make it useable. Artificial turf has come a long way. Why not use that? I guess my biggest issue is that 90% of it was roped off the entire cruise. Except for the one concert night.

I wasn't trying to be clever or snarky, I thought you might have come up with some cool ideas. I'm basically indifferent to the grass - walked by it a lot but never truly used it. I'm sure there may very well be some viable alternative uses for the space.

One thing for sure you have not seen any cruise lines copy this area. I would bet a lot of money if Celebrity had to do it over again they would not do it. But that is something they will never admit, over time it will just fade away, like all other mistakes. All that space not creating any reasonable revenue,is really silly. I would have like to see them put in more specialty restaurants, don't care if I have to pay more. More choice is good.

The idea of using artificial turf is a good one. We saw some at our local home show and I was amazed. Would love that in my house! Every time we have gone up to the lawn area the chairs are all taken. I don't relish lying on the lawn.

For me the idea of grass/lawn on a cruise ship is not appealing, especially if it's high maintenance. Seems like ideal space for more open air dining and bar areas. Better yet make it specialty dining or reserved space for suite guests. :D

Love the lawn area. Great place to go read, away from crowds and noise. Personally I don't want yet another restaurant up there like Reflection. Seriously, how much food can people actually consume?

Don't worry... I didn't take it as being snarky. I guess my main point is the lack of current usage. I personally don't have to use it, just as I don't use the spa or the casino. If grass is what people want, then why not make it moe user friendly? I love nature, but in this instance, maybe the maintenance of nature is not conducive for profitability.

When we had our Alcove on the Silhouette the main access spots to the lawn were roped off ( eg the corners) At some point, due to traffic, they must have block them off so a bare path doesn't form lol. The centre was still very much used, games etc as people just entered elsewhere ie between the Alcoves and a few other spots. I don't think artificial turf would be as nice to walk/lie on as real grass (cool on your feet)

Maybe if you were from above the Arctic circle and wanted grass and sun fine, for us and probably many other cruisers, a waste of space. Maybe all the so called comfort dogs and true working dogs would have a better place to, well enjoy LOL

A quiet swimming pool and extra sun beds would be my choice, the swimming pools on the last two cruises were always to busy to use, we always had trouble finding unoccupied sun beds, granted it was a Caribbean cruise so everyone was wanting to cool off in the pool.

That was the exact experience on my recent Reflection cruise. Only one small grassy area in the aft section was allowed to be used. I like the concept, but what's the purpose of having it if it's always roped off??

BTW, the Alcoves were all full on my cruise.

Prime exampile here, out of 1,000,000 passengers a year, there will be a few that dont like the pool, the casino, no grand or midnight buffet, the lawn, the alcoves, the music, no towel animals, no promanade deck, high glass around the railing, too many pushie beverage servers at the pool, or not enought, yada, yada, yada.

Again, I for one am glad they at least have indoor plumbing!:D

We played Boche on our 3/2 & 3/9 /14 Eastern & Western Caribbean & love the game .However ,from a practical point of view ,the space could be used better imo ,by putting in a adult only pool & Jacuzzi's & snack & drink bars

Just the fact that sections have to be roped off to "rest" shows that it is used.

I've seen sections replaced too, due to wear.

A cruise ship is about something for everyone as wallie said.

We love the lawn, don't spend our entire cruise there, but its a nice feature.

We feel the same way about the persian gardens, which my DW constantly mis-pronounces

" persian gulf" LOL

Adult only?!?! I've never really seen any more than a dozen or so kids on any cruise I've been on with X, is there that much need for a dedicated adults only pool...I also rarely see the pools themselves fool, lots of people laying around, but rarely is the pool at or close to capacity.

Of course each cruise is different...

Cant say say I agree with this thought. Celebrity had four year between Solstice and Reflection and left the lawn there. They made numerous changes like the aqua suites the cabanas lawn club grill ect but the grass itself remained.

There is always a stand of beach towels nearby we grab one of those and have a picnic. To us that is a fun thing to do on a cruise ship
