Problems on the Crown Princess?

I dropped some friends off around 1:30PM in San Pedro yesterday to board the Crown Princess. I'd dropped them off for several other Princess cruises and had come to expect that they would be able to go directly into the check-in area, but this time I was surprised to see a VERY long line snaking along the outside of the building.

Anyway, I got an e-mail from one of them today; he said that the ship had to be disinfected due to a norovirus outbreak and that they didn't even get inside the terminal until 4PM. (And they had priority boarding privileges.) Not a good way to start things off, but I hope the rest of their trip is better!

This has happened quite often this season and unfortunatley is not unusual. Lets just hope they get a handle on it. :(

I picked up friends who came off the 49 voyage from Fort Lauderdale. They were ready by 9:30 AM. No problems with customs and immigration. But did say that the Crown had several cases of Norovirus when the ship docked.

Hopefully the short delay did get the virus under control.

Carribbean Princess in January suffered thru a series of noro cruises.

Princess sent a series of e-mails on turn around day updating her status until she was ready for boarding.

Crew is still on code red conditions in dining areas from the norovirus (NV) outbreak. No salt and pepper shakers on table or bread baskets. All is served by waiters/waitresses. Also, hand sanitizer is also to be used by passengers before entering dining room. The captain went over the signs of NV during his public announcements at noon yesterday, which were also handed out when checking in and also in the cabin. We are being VERY careful this cruise.

Two years ago, the Crown had a series of cruises that were marred by noro outbreaks. Several deep cleanings later, I boarded it for a 12 night Rome to Venice cruise and had no issues.

I hope that this year, after several deep cleanings, I have no issues on my August 23 Alaskan SB 7 nighter.

I realize all it takes for an outbreak is to have one noro infected passenger to board and it certainly isn't the ship's fault. That said, I have never seen cleanings being done in the casino.

On the ship the captain announced this morning that they are still seeing a higher than average number. Not knowing the number of hold overs from the 49 day, but knowing the incubation period I am thinking that there are a significant number of crew members affected since he made a similar announcement yesterday and today the numbers have increased. Getting on was a long process. There was a big problem with lost luggage and last night the anytime diners were waiting over an hour just to get the pager. I was just hanging out and chatting with various folks and they were all taking it in stride, but still grumbling a little. Not much you can do. Our steward on boarded in San Pedro so he doesn't seem as weary as some of the others. I think they are really working hard to get the noro under control and it is having a ripple effect. The ship is immaculate.

Can anytime diners make a reservation instead of having to use the pager?

Because of NORO on the pager?

Hope not! No, just because on other Princess ships I was on we didn't use pagers but rather used reservations and I am hoping to be able to do the same next week on the crown.

We got off of the Crown on Saturday. Disembarkation was a breeze. No problems.

I feel that the Captain and the ship did a great job keeping things under control.

It was good that they thoroughly cleaned the ship before the new passengers boarded. I expected that their boarding would be late because of that.
