Self walk off

Recommended Posts

I dont understand how you could be chosen for luggage inspection by customs if you or your luggage is not there

Well, a friend of mine said her name was randomly chosen from a list. Her name was announced and she was taken over to a separate section. Evidently the ship has a master list of self disembarks as well as each color group from the info filled out and turned in. Another person whose name was called wasn't in the line and a crew member had to go find them.

You take your own bags and walk off the ship. Instead of going to the luggage area inside of customs and searching for your bag, you go directly to customs, present your passport and Dec form, and leave. Not everyone wants to bother with their luggage; however, many people do self-walk off, and unless you are there early (or later) the line will be long. That said, we always do it. If we have plans, we are in line by 6:45. If not, we usually leave the cabin at 9:30 (which is the latest you can be in the cabin) and then leave then.

Hi, is 9:30 the time on all of the ships or does it vary by Ship? We are looking at the Star.

The instructions that I've seen over the years about the self debark is that you can do it anytime during the morning. Indeed we've done it very early and we've done it much later -- depending on our flight. The biggest downside is the wait for elevators that aren't full of people with their suitcases so that we don't have to shlep our suitcases down the stairs.

9:30 has been the latest on the Sky, Epic, and Getaway. I would imagine it's the same for all the ships, but who knows. Also, you do not have to self disembark with the first group. You can do it at any time.

You are supposed to go with the self-debark group, the first group, so that if you are randomly chosen for luggage inspection by customs at that time you will be there. Otherwise someone has to look for you all over the ship.

This I've never heard of. They say you can leave anytime up until last call if you are doing self embarkation.

Me neither. People who self embark (Easy Walk Off) can leave at any time. However they are given the opportunity to disembark first. They must be able to carry all their belonging with no assistance.

I doubt people get called to customs randomly. ;) It could be based on their on board spending because they have to pay duty or some nefarious reason. :p

We also have a 7 hour drive back to Canada. We leave the cabin at 6, grab breakfast at garden cafe and join the line just before 7 - I think during March Break there might have been 30 people in line ahead of us - we were in our car pulling out of the parking lot at 7:34.

For us, in the past it has always been "requested" that we leave the cabin by 9 am. We realize the effort involved by the crew to get the ship turned around and ready for the next boarding and do exit by then. I'm guessing you would not be thrown out of your cabin until 10 am.

I can only go by my own experience where self-embark were told to be first group. Sun and Star.

In late March on the Breakaway's NYC-Florida-Bahamas sailing, NYC sail time was 3 PM and arrival back scheduled for 8 AM (docking mostly early, around 6:30AM & Express Walk-Off started at 7:30AM.) Priority Disembark including Suites/VIP starting at 8:30AM and other color tags to follow - last tags no later than 10:15AM.

Haven & VIP/escorted guests began boarding as early as 10:45AM and we're onboard being Zone 1 around 11:30AM - a very tight turnaround schedule for the crew. ALL guests are requested to vacate their cabins by 8:30 AM and PA announcements began "piping" directly into the staterooms at 8 AM - my understanding that stewards were seen knocking on doors & checking on who's "hiding" inside after 8:30AM. Guests are welcomed to wait & relax in the public area lounges or places with chairs. Those carrying off their own luggages are free to leave later as others said.

The exception, those doing B2B and arrangements were made ... someone else can comment on that. We had some pax that boarded at Port Canaveral, FL and NYC was a port of call for them.

And what are they going to do if you're not in the first group and don't show up until later? Refuse to let you off? I'd be okay with that. :D
